The purpose of this case study was to review the literature and determine what treatment modality would best work for the client chosen with the diagnosis of Dependent Personality Disorder. While reviewing the literature, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) appeared to be the treatment that worked the best. This 39 year-old Caucasian female presented with a number of complaints, including difficulties in forming non-abusive relationships, low self-esteem and possible depression, possible panic attacks and difficulty relating to and parenting her 12-year-old daughter. After diagnosis, a review of the literature was conducted to determine empirically supported treatments for depression. Based upon this review, this study examined and evaluated the effectiveness of various treatments determined in the current literature to be the best practice in treating depression in adults. The subject was a 44 year old Caucasian woman who initiated treatment voluntarily following a referral made by her primary care physician. This study was conducted in a community-based agency. A diagnosis of depression and dysthymia was reached through an initial intake interview and use of the DSM-IV. Best practice methodology was determined through an …

In uropathogenic Escherichia coli, P pili (Pap) facilitate binding to host epithelial cells and subsequent colonization. Whereas P pili can be produced at 37°C, the expression of these fimbriae is suppressed at 23°C. Previously, insertion mutations in rimJ, a gene encoding the N-terminal acetyltransferase of ribosomal protein S5, were shown to disrupt this thermoregulatory response, allowing papBA transcription at low temperature. In this study, we created an in-frame deletion of rimJ. This deletion relieved the repressive effects not only of low temperature but also of rich (Luria-Bertani [LB]) medium and glucose on papBA transcription, indicating that RimJ modulates papBA transcription …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of a therapeutic treatment program for a latency-aged male child. This eight-year old child presented with several problem areas. These included poor academic performance, attention difficulties, symptoms of depression and acting out behaviors. The client also had a long standing history of family dysfunction and instability. The client participated in a multimodal treatment program consisting of individual and family counseling, as well as a school-based partial care intervention program. The place and date of the domestication of the horse has long been a matter for debate among archaeologists. To determine whether horses were domesticated from one or several ancestral horse populations, we sequenced the mitochondrial D-loop for 318 horses from 25 oriental and European breeds, including American mustangs. Adding these sequences to previously published data, the total comes to 652, the largest currently available database. From these sequences, a phylogenetic network was constructed that showed that most of the 93 different mitochondrial (mt)DNA types grouped into 17 distinct phylogenetic clusters. To begin to understand the modulatory role of glutamate in the inner retina, we examined the mechanisms underlying metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5)-dependent Ca2+ elevations in cultured GABAergic amacrine cells. A partial sequence of chicken retinal mGluR5 encompassing intracellular loops 2 and 3 suggests that it can couple to both Gq and Gs. Selective activation of mGluR5 stimulated Ca2+ elevations that varied in waveform from cell to cell. Experiments using high external K+ revealed that the mGluR5-dependent Ca2+ elevations are distinctive in amplitude and time course from those engendered by depolarization. Many poisonous plants occur within Tennessee. These plants may have an evolutionary advantage over competing plants because of the presence of toxic secondary compounds. Consequently, plant species containing poisons may occur more frequently in advanced families than in primitive families. A list was compiled of those plants that occur in Tennessee that are known to be poisonous and these numbers were compared with the total number of species within both advanced and primitive families. Tennessee poisonous plants occur in higher percentages in those families that are primitive and moderately advanced than in those that are advanced.

An occupational risk assessment of the Monteverde Cheese Factory. Our group was asked to do a basic risk assessment of the Productores de Monteverde, S.A. (cheese factory) to identify occupational risks and make recommendations for a safer work environment. We did observations of five areas in the plant: milk receiving, main plant, warehouse, offices and maintenance areas from July 2 to July 28, 2002. We also asked workers to fill out a questionnaire asking about their perceptions of work training, risks and possible solutions to workplace hazards. In an open community meeting held Monday, July 1, 2002, members of the community in the Monteverde Zone (including Monteverde, Cerro Plano, Santa Elena, San Luis and Los Llanos), stressed that one of the major problems the community is facing is a lack of recreational activities for youth. They emphasized the fact that drugs and teenage pregnancies are an issue here in the Monteverde Zone, and it is their opinion that the lack of positive activities for youth has a direct correlation. A multi-method assessment on food security in the Monteverde Zone. Our research focused on food insecurity and perceptions of nutrition and food resources in the Monteverde Zone. Information was collected through various methods, including an anthropometric assessment of nutritional status in San Luis, semi-structured interviews with mothers regarding what foods are considered healthy and what they feed their children, sixty-seven returned Radimer/Cornell Measure of Hunger and Food Insecurity Scales, and a focus group with seven mothers of young children concerning the idea of a community garden. A preliminary investigation of the effects of the transformation on the community due to tourism. In recent years the economic structure of Costa Rica’s Monteverde zone (Santa Elena, Cerro Plano, Monteverde) has been transformed from one based on agriculture and dairy to one based on tourism. The goal of our project is to provide a preliminary investigation of the effects of this transformation on the community.
