Promising Practices To Engage Families And Support Family Preservation, Marianne Berry
Promising Practices To Engage Families And Support Family Preservation, Marianne Berry
Journal of Family Strengths
The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) is the latest legislation in two decades of important child welfare policy in the United States. The Adoption and Safe Families Act has served to shorten the period of time that caseworkers and families have to show that families are making progress toward family preservation, with permanency decisions being made after 12 months, rather than 18. The importance of engaging and motivating families in services has therefore increased. The practice directive of ASFA can be summarized as 'Act Smart, Fast, and Accountable. " Using findings from largely correlational research, concrete recommendations …

Comprehensive Community Initiatives (Cci): A Comparison Of Community Implementation Plans, Teri Perkins
Comprehensive Community Initiatives (Cci): A Comparison Of Community Implementation Plans, Teri Perkins
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
People in crisis often require multiple community services. A homeless person may need medical health care and behavioral health care, along with shelter. A woman who is the victim of domestic abuse may need help with childcare, transportation, food, and emergency housing. Comprehensive community initiatives (CCIs) attempt to provide this interrelated range of community services.
CCIs developed as a part of community building efforts in the late 1980’s (Kubisch, 1996; Stagner and Duran, 1997). “Comprehensive” can either refer to an initiative that incorporates social, educational, cultural, physical, and economic development in a community or to an initiative whose purpose is …

A Voice For Low-Income Children: Evaluating Guardians Ad Litem In Divorce And Parental Rights And Responsibilities Cases, Alison A. Beyea, Frank D' Alessandro
Children, Youth, & Families
The Muskie Guardian ad Litem Project evaluated the use of Guardians ad Litem (GALS) in divorce and parental rights and responsibilities cases in Maine.
The research suggests that there are significant benefits of GAL appointment for children in contested court proceedings. GALS effectively represent the best interests of children in family proceedings. They assist the Court in issuing custodial decisions, assist in settlement of highly contested cases and otherwise expedite the legal process. In addition to their investigative function, GALS report working with parents and children in an effort to reduce conflict between family members and to connect families with …

Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski
Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although many studies have addressed burnout, secondary trauma, and job satisfaction among child welfare workers throughout the United States, a review of the current and available literature revealed limited research addressing the impact of vicarious trauma and its relationship to worker retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction. This study was conducted within the context of traumatology theory and examined how vicarious trauma affects child welfare workers and to what degree vicarious trauma has had an impact on their collective community, the child welfare system. The research question that guided this study was: How does vicarious trauma affect child welfare workers and …
Postsecondary School Education Benefits For Undocumented Immigrants: Promises And Pitfalls, Victor C. Romero
Postsecondary School Education Benefits For Undocumented Immigrants: Promises And Pitfalls, Victor C. Romero
Faculty Scholarship
Should longtime undocumented immigrants have the same opportunity as lawful permanent residents and U.S. citizens to attend state colleges and universities? There are two typical justifications for denying them such opportunities. First, treating undocumented immigrants as in-state residents discriminates against U.S. citizen nonresidents of the state. Second, and more broadly, undocumented immigration should be discouraged as a policy matter, and therefore allowing undocumented immigrant children equal opportunities as legal residents condones and perhaps encourages "illegal" immigration. This essay responds to these two concerns by surveying state and federal solutions to this issue.

Forensic Interviews Of Children: The Components Of Scientific Validity And Legal Admissibility, Nancy E. Walker
Law and Contemporary Problems
The problems associated with assessments of children's reports of victimization in criminal proceedings came to national attention during the 1980s and 1990s in a series of highly publicized trials of daycare staff. Walker describes information that professionals need to know if they are to conduct valid interview of children in forensic contexts.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the level of church involvement and self-esteem in African American adolescents from the area of St. Louis, Missouri. Participants were 58 adolescents who were given two instruments: The Hare Self-esteem Scale and Church Involvement Assessment Scale. The Hare Self-esteem was administered to measure the level of self-esteem. The researcher designed the Church Involvement Assessment Scale to measure the level of involvement in church related activities. The hypothesis was that the adolescents who are more involved in church related activities would tend to have a higher self-esteem than adolescents who are less …

Community College Engagement In Community Programs And Services, Lisa Phinney, Mary Kay Schoen, Ellen Hause
Partnerships/Community
In 2001, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) conducted a national survey of community colleges to identify their community programs and services. Survey responses demonstrated a strong level of community college commitment to improving the quality of life in their communities and offering a place to pursue lifelong learning. Responding colleges indicated that they are engaged in a wide variety of programs and services designed to reflect the diverse needs of the communities they serve, with many partnering with local and state government, nonprofit organizations, and local schools.
