Diagnosis And Placement Variables Affecting The Outcome Of Adolescents With Behavioral Disorders, Mary A. Peterson, Mark Scanlan

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The treatment of adolescents with behavior disorders represents significant challenges. This article reviews some of the most effective behavioral and pharmacological treatments identified in the research. The study used outcome data from a residential treatment program to identify variables that predicted level of functioning post-discharge. Significant variables included diagnosis (mood vs. behavior disorder spectrum), co-morbidity and discharge placement.

Channeling Competition In The Global Securities Market, Stephen J. Choi Jan 2002

Channeling Competition In The Global Securities Market, Stephen J. Choi

Faculty Articles

Global capital markets are becoming more integrated. With the free flow of capital has come increased competition between different financial centers. For those in favor of increased regulatory competition, the growing integration of world financial markets is generally viewed as a positive occurrence. Nevertheless, this essay casts some doubt as to the value of regulatory competition along dimensions other than the supply of investor protection. Regulators may compete not over the types and quality of investor protection but rather over jurisdictional boundaries and the extraterritorial application of law. This, of course, does not mean that regulatory competition lacks merit. Indeed, …

We Can Do Better, Peggy C. Davis Jan 2002

We Can Do Better, Peggy C. Davis

Faculty Articles

I want to work toward answers to two very hard questions. Here is the first: How do we avoid essentialist or stereotyped conceptions of women and men while holding to the possibility that women have the insight and inclination to transform the practice of law? I take as given the need to expose and resist stereotypes that constrain us as women and men-to deny the essentialist claims that women but not men are nurturing, that men but not women are quantitatively apt, that women are inconsistent and inconstant, while men are logical and true. I acknowledge that there are times …

Smoothing The Boundary Between Foreign And Domestic Law: Comments On Professors Dodge, Golove, And Stephan, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2002

Smoothing The Boundary Between Foreign And Domestic Law: Comments On Professors Dodge, Golove, And Stephan, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Two of the three papers on which I have been asked to comment address issues involving the importation of foreign into American law. The third paper raises, with a somewhat more general focus, the coordination of activities between foreign and American legal systems. Professor William Dodge discusses the extent to which the procedures under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may, or should, be used to superintend the (perverse) outcomes of the American legal system. Professor David Golove asks the extent to which treaties entered into by the United States can, or should, be effective as domestic legislation. Professor …

A Voice For Low-Income Children: Evaluating Guardians Ad Litem In Divorce And Parental Rights And Responsibilities Cases, Alison A. Beyea, Frank D' Alessandro Jan 2002

A Voice For Low-Income Children: Evaluating Guardians Ad Litem In Divorce And Parental Rights And Responsibilities Cases, Alison A. Beyea, Frank D' Alessandro

Children, Youth, & Families

The Muskie Guardian ad Litem Project evaluated the use of Guardians ad Litem (GALS) in divorce and parental rights and responsibilities cases in Maine.

The research suggests that there are significant benefits of GAL appointment for children in contested court proceedings. GALS effectively represent the best interests of children in family proceedings. They assist the Court in issuing custodial decisions, assist in settlement of highly contested cases and otherwise expedite the legal process. In addition to their investigative function, GALS report working with parents and children in an effort to reduce conflict between family members and to connect families with …

Stress And Hippocampal Plasticity, Kara Pham Jan 2002

Stress And Hippocampal Plasticity, Kara Pham

Student Theses and Dissertations

The addition of new neurons continues in the dentate gyrus of the adult rat, and this process has been previously shown to be regulated by adrenal steroid hormones, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activity, psychosocial stress and learning and memory. Repeated restraint stress is known to induce neuroanatomical changes in the hippocampus, such as dendritic remodeling in CA3 neurons and mossy fiber terminal rearrangement, and these alterations are reversible, suggesting that the hippocampal system experiences a certain degree of plasticity in response to stress. This dissertation examines the effects of chronic restraint stress on several parameters of hippocampal plasticity, including dentate gyrus …

Leptin And The Control Of Body Weight And Metabolism: Role For Stearoyl Coa Desaturase-1 And Other Leptin-Regulated Genes In The Liver, Paul Cohen Jan 2002

Leptin And The Control Of Body Weight And Metabolism: Role For Stearoyl Coa Desaturase-1 And Other Leptin-Regulated Genes In The Liver, Paul Cohen

Student Theses and Dissertations

Leptin is an adipocyte-derived hormone that regulates energy balance, metabolism, and the neuroendocrine response to altered nutrition. Mice lacking leptin (ob/ob) or its receptor (db/db) are massively obese and hyperphagic. They also have increased triglyceride deposits in multiple peripheral organs, including the liver, massively enlarged and steatotic. Leptin elicits a metabolic response that cannot be explained by its anorectic effects alone. This response is characterized by weight loss, depletion of lipid from peripheral tissues, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. The mechanisms underlying these actions were largely unknown. This thesis addressed leptin's metabolic effects on the liver, an organ with a critical …

Spankers And Nonspankers: Where They Get Information On Spanking, Wendy A. Walsh Jan 2002

Spankers And Nonspankers: Where They Get Information On Spanking, Wendy A. Walsh

Sociology

Because spanking is common, puts children at risk for harmful side effects, and is ineffective as a positive behavior management tool, it is important to identify the kind of advice families receive about the appropriateness of spanking. Using the health belief model, I examined spankers and nonspankers on the spanking messages they received from eight sources of discipline information and how important they perceived these messages to be. Data from telephone interviews with 998 mothers with children aged 2 to 14 years showed that 33% of mothers rated advice from workshops, pediatricians, newspapers and magazines, and books as ‘‘very important.’’ …

Relationship Marketing Strategy, Patricia Sorce Jan 2002

Relationship Marketing Strategy, Patricia Sorce

Books

The purpose of this research is to understand the impact of relationship marketing strategy on the demand for customized communication through printing. Though many marketing executives report that they are using a relationship marketing strategy, this has not resulted in high demand for variable data printing. Is it a failure of strategy or a failure of implementation? Two exploratory studies are presented to answer this question. First, the foundations of relationship marketing strategy are presented. In particular, the central role of loyalty is discussed as the mediating factor in building relationships with customers. Using the concepts of brand equity, value …

Computer-Supported Collaborative Knowledge Construction Learning Environment / Siti Soraya Abdul Rahman, Abdul Rahman Siti Soraya

Student Works (2000-2009)

The current interest in the use of information communication technology (ICT) has made it feasible to consider constructivism principles within the context of the technology-mediated higher education. This is primarily due to advances in ICT resulting in an effective means to implement constructivism principles, which would be difficult to accomplish with other media. In this development, computers play an important role. Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), especially, offers promising innovations and tools for restructuring teaching-learning processes to prepare students for education today. An attempt is made in this thesis to explore the current pedagogical perspectives of learning on educational practices …

Loneliness Among College Students, Rowena P. Maliwanag Jan 2002

Loneliness Among College Students, Rowena P. Maliwanag

Honors Capstones

Everyone experiences loneliness, but high levels of loneliness are related to depression, low self-esteem, psychosomatic illnesses, and even suicide. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: 1) to find out of gender, year in school, marital status, grade point average, owning a car, awareness and use of support services, religious beliefs, living arrangement, and race are significant factors in the level of loneliness, 2) to educate the public about loneliness and implement programs to help college students. The scope of this study is limited to only American students. International students were taken into account in the original research but due …

Multiple Perspectives On The Services Received And Funding For Students With Individual Education Plans, Christine Machnick Jan 2002

Multiple Perspectives On The Services Received And Funding For Students With Individual Education Plans, Christine Machnick

Honors Capstones

Students with special needs have rights that are guaranteed to them by the federal law IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities with Education Act). The students are their parents need to be infonned of their rights. If they are not well infonned the student might be disadvantaged. The parents need to be advocates for their child. The parents need to understand special education and the rights that their child has to be effective advocates. The rising cost of education often cause students not to receive the services in which they are entitled. The purpose of this project was to research the services …
