Perceived Stress In The Field Of Athletic Training, Gregory R. Burnett Aug 2002

Perceived Stress In The Field Of Athletic Training, Gregory R. Burnett

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this study was to determine the significance of the relationships between the three personal/situational variables and perceived stress, from R.E. Smith's model, and how it related to the field of athletic training (Hendrix, et al., 140).

The hypothesis for this study stated that perceived stress levels were more significantly related to hardiness and social support levels than to relevant work-related issue levels (i.e. athletic training issues) as they relate to the field of athletic training. Conversely, athletic training issues play a less significant role in perceived stress levels.

Results from the study indicated that a fairly strong …

Occupational Health In The Productores De Monteverde Cheese Factory, August 4, 2002, María Teresa Fregoso, Idalia Aracely Rodríguez, Nancy Romano

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

An occupational risk assessment of the Monteverde Cheese Factory. Our group was asked to do a basic risk assessment of the Productores de Monteverde, S.A. (cheese factory) to identify occupational risks and make recommendations for a safer work environment. We did observations of five areas in the plant: milk receiving, main plant, warehouse, offices and maintenance areas from July 2 to July 28, 2002. We also asked workers to fill out a questionnaire asking about their perceptions of work training, risks and possible solutions to workplace hazards. Along with the questionnaires, we did sixteen informal interviews asking workers how they …

In an open community meeting held Monday, July 1, 2002, members of the community in the Monteverde Zone (including Monteverde, Cerro Plano, Santa Elena, San Luis and Los Llanos), stressed that one of the major problems the community is facing is a lack of recreational activities for youth. Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

A preliminary investigation of the effects of the transformation on the community due to tourism. In recent years the economic structure of Costa Rica’s Monteverde zone (Santa Elena, Cerro Plano, Monteverde) has been transformed from one based on agriculture and dairy to one based on tourism. The goal of our project is to provide a preliminary investigation of the effects of this transformation on the community. Prior to beginning our research, we identified several possible effects of tourism on the area. These possible effects consisted of economic and cultural shifts, contamination of the water supply, decreased air quality, an increase …

Use Of Exemplar Surveys To Reveal Implicit Types Of Intelligence, Delroy L. Paulhus, Paul Wehr, Peter D. Harms, David I. Strasser Aug 2002

Use Of Exemplar Surveys To Reveal Implicit Types Of Intelligence, Delroy L. Paulhus, Paul Wehr, Peter D. Harms, David I. Strasser

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

Implicit theories of intelligence were investigated via surveys of exemplars of intelligence. Study 1 was a four-sample survey of famous exemplars. These diverse samples reported a similar set of popular exemplars, which clustered into five groups. These groups represented five types of intelligence: scientific, artistic, entrepreneurial, communicative, and moral intelligence. In Study 2, the minimal overlap of intelligence exemplars with those of fame, creativity, and wisdom refuted the possibility that exemplar reports are indiscriminate or solely a result of availability. In Study 3, knowledgeable judges rated the similarity of 50 famous persons to exemplars representing each type of intelligence. All …

Using The Internet For Organizational Research: A Study Of Cynicism In The Workplace, Judy Eaton, C. Ward Struthers Aug 2002

Using The Internet For Organizational Research: A Study Of Cynicism In The Workplace, Judy Eaton, C. Ward Struthers

Criminology

The Internet can be a valuable data collection tool for organizational psychology researchers. It can be less expensive than traditional paper-and-pencil survey methods, and the potential pool of participants is much larger. In addition, it can be used in situations where traditional data collection methods are not feasible, such as research involving sensitive issues such as negative employee attitudes or deviant behaviors at work. In this study, we examined the organizational attitudes of employees from various companies using (a) a snowball sample, who completed a traditional paper and pencil survey (n = 135), and (b) a sample recruited over …
