Physician Empathy: Definition, Components, Measurement, And Relationship To Gender And Specialty, Mohammadreza Hojat, Joseph S. Gonnella, Thomas J. Nasca, Salvatore Mangione Md, Michael Vergare, Michael Magee

CRMEHC Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: There is a dearth of empirical research on physician empathy despite its mediating role in patient-physician relationships and clinical outcomes. This study was designed to investigate the components of physician empathy, its measurement properties, and group differences in empathy scores.

METHOD: A revised version of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (with 20 Likert-type items) was mailed to 1,007 physicians affiliated with the Jefferson Health System in the greater Philadelphia region; 704 (70%) responded. Construct validity, reliability of the empathy scale, and the differences on mean empathy scores by physicians’ gender and specialty were examined.

RESULTS: Three meaningful factors …

Nest Building Behavior Of The Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno: Trogonidae), September 2002, Emily S. Thaden Sep 2002

Nest Building Behavior Of The Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno: Trogonidae), September 2002, Emily S. Thaden

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Resplendent Quetzals (Pharomachrus mocinno: Trogonidae) form monogamous pairs during the breeding season (Johnsgard 2000). Both the male and female invest in nest building and the parental duties of egg incubation and chick rearing (Skutch 1944). I looked at the nest building behavior of two pairs of quetzals in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. This study quantitatively examined differences between the amount of time each sex spent excavating the nest as well as qualitatively described the behavior of the pair as they worked. The female of one of the pairs spent a significantly longer time working in the nest than the male …

The Arduous Path To Brand Loyalty, B S Bhatia, Anupam Bawa Sep 2002

The Arduous Path To Brand Loyalty, B S Bhatia, Anupam Bawa

IIMB Management Review

Brand loyalty is a highly sought after goal. But how do some of the commonly used marketing strategies fare vis-à-vis this goal? B S Bhatia and Anupam Bawa explored the relationship of nine elements of marketing strategy — market share, competitive strategy, pricing strategy, promotion scheme, advertisement, perceived level of advertising, media used for advertising, factors influencing first purchase and type of distribution outlet used — to brand loyalty. Data was collected from 300 households, both rural and urban, belonging to all income groups, in two districts of Punjab and in Chandigarh. The products included in the scope of the …

Amar Bhide : A New Take On New Businesses In Conversation With N Balasubramanian, Rishikesha T Krishnan, Mathew Manimala, S Raghunath And Douglas Stoddart., Amar Bhide

IIMB Management Review

In the beginning there was the traditional rags-to-riches myth. The myth now prevalent in the business world is about the business school style startup – the well planned, well financed, well managed startup, where an experienced manager from Microsoft or Intel has a big idea, comes up with a plan, raises millions of dollars from a venture capital fund, recruits a top notch team, puts it all together using the kind of business management techniques taught at business schools, and in fairly short order turns it into a successful business. Amar Bhide, whose book, The Origin and Evolution of New …

The Biases Of Risk Tradeoff Analysis: Towards Parity In Environmental And Health-And-Safety Regulation, Samuel J. Rascoff, Richard L. Revesz Sep 2002

The Biases Of Risk Tradeoff Analysis: Towards Parity In Environmental And Health-And-Safety Regulation, Samuel J. Rascoff, Richard L. Revesz

University of Chicago Law Review

Risk tradeoff analysis is in the process of transforming the practice of regulation. Its core idea is simple and intuitively appealing: Regulations undertaken to minimize or eliminate certain health risks often have the perverse effect of promoting other risks. A serious analysis of the impact of a regulation should pay attention not only to its primary effects in reducing the so-called target risk, but also to the secondary effects of the regulation in bringing about "ancillary risks." In this way, risk tradeoff analysis promises a more rational technique for the evaluation of regulation. Risk tradeoff analysis, however, focuses exclusively on …

Subjectivity In Research: Why Not ? But…, Martin Drapeau Sep 2002

Subjectivity In Research: Why Not ? But…, Martin Drapeau

The Qualitative Report

This article addresses the question of subjectivity in research. In order to facilitate the use of subjectivity in a research context, the author reminds readers of possible procedures as suggested in the literature. Particular attention is given to the idea of peer debriefing. Inspired by psychoanalysis, the author expands on the concept of discussant or debriefer and suggests that by doing so, subjectivity can be better understood. It is suggested that this may actually be fully integrated into a study in order to both better understand the subject under examination as well as the influence of the research mentor and …

Emotional Episodes Facilitate Word Recall, Paula T. Hertel, C. Parks Sep 2002

Emotional Episodes Facilitate Word Recall, Paula T. Hertel, C. Parks

Psychology Faculty Research

Dysphoric and nondysphoric college students described self-generated images of themselves interacting with the referents of neutral nouns; the nouns were paired with adjectives that changed their emotional meaning (e.g., cruise ship, cargo ship, sinking ship). On the subsequent unexpected test, the nouns from emotional pairings were more frequently recalled than were those from neutral pairings, regardless of their valence or congruence with the students' mood. An examination of the initial descriptions revealed that emotional images were more distinctive, but not in a pattern correlated with recall of the corresponding nouns.

A Principled Complementarity Of Method: In Defence Of Methodological Eclecticism And The Qualitative-Quantitative Debate, Andy Roberts Sep 2002

A Principled Complementarity Of Method: In Defence Of Methodological Eclecticism And The Qualitative-Quantitative Debate, Andy Roberts

The Qualitative Report

I found PhD study to be a stimulating, challenging and ideal conduit for exploring knowledge via discussion, argument and defence: to have the opportunity to explore method, methodology, epistemology, ontology and what may constitute 'acceptable' research practice is an enriching experience. I had previously heard of intepretivists decrying positivists et cetera, but I was unprepared to find quantitative researchers and lecturers openly dismissing qualitative approaches, and finding dismissals by qualitative researchers of the use of a quantitative approach: such are disappointing and confusing to a trainee researcher. Thus, a far less enriching experience for a trainee researcher is being faced …

Nolan's Memento, Memory, And Recognition, Adrian Gargett Sep 2002

Nolan's Memento, Memory, And Recognition, Adrian Gargett

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Adrian Gargett, in his paper "Nolan's Memento, Memory, and Recognition," analyses Christopher Nolan's film Memento. Gargett employs Deleuzian film theory in a general consideration of the relationship between thought and film. Gargett proposes that Memento acts as a type of intellectual stimulant that has the viewer deciphering a puzzle in process: what is identified in Memento is the way in which memory and the work of memory are presented in the film's narrative construct. In his analysis Gargett argues that memory is not added on; rather, it is already present, and that the Deleuzian abstract quality does not lie in …

The Nature And Scope Of Intra-Cultural Variation On Psychological Dimensions, Anu Realo, Jüri Allik Sep 2002

The Nature And Scope Of Intra-Cultural Variation On Psychological Dimensions, Anu Realo, Jüri Allik

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Much of the research in cross-cultural psychology is done using countries (national cultures) as main units of comparison, disregarding other important characteristics of the participants such as their ethnicity, language, religious or territorial affiliation. Thus, despite the fact that there exist clearly distinguishable sub-cultures within many countries or national cultures, they are often regarded as uniform and homogenous entities in cross-cultural research. In many cases, as we will argue in this paper, such approach is rather justifiable. In doing so, however, one should always be aware of large intra-cultural diversity which can be found in many countries all around the …

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein Sep 2002

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …

Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner Sep 2002

Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper examines the effect of tort rules on behavior if people are optimistic or insensitive relative to true probabilities. The paper shows that under certain conditions both strict liability and negligence cause levels of care that are higher than, or equal to, what is efficient (rather than lower). The paper also shows that under certain conditions strict liability and negligence cause the same level of activity among optimists (more than is efficient). Other implications for tort law are discussed, as are the sensitivity of the results to the choice of how to model probability errors. Implications for contract law, …

Cognitive Comparative Advantage And The Organization Of Work: Lessons From Herbert Simon's Vision Of The Future, Richard N. Langlois Sep 2002

Cognitive Comparative Advantage And The Organization Of Work: Lessons From Herbert Simon's Vision Of The Future, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

In a marvelous but somewhat neglected paper, 'The Corporation: Will It Be Managed by Machines?' Herbert Simon articulated from the perspective of 1960 his vision of what we now call the New Economy the machine-aided system of production and management of the late twentieth century. Simon's analysis sprang from what I term the principle of cognitive comparative advantage: one has to understand the quite different cognitive structures of humans and machines (including computers) in order to explain and predict the tasks to which each will be most suited. Perhaps unlike Simon's better-known predictions about progress in artificial intelligence research, the …

Shirking And Motivation In Firms: Survey Evidence On Worker Attitudes, Lanse P. Minkler Sep 2002

Shirking And Motivation In Firms: Survey Evidence On Worker Attitudes, Lanse P. Minkler

Economics Working Papers

In an extensive national survey, 82.7% of the respondents report that they are very likely to keep an agreement to work hard if they agreed to, even if it was almost impossible for their employer to monitor them. Based on mean responses, the rank order of motivations in descending importance is: moral, intrinsic, peer-pressure, and positive incentives. Respondents also report that fairness considerations are important and that they are especially likely to keep agreements to do a good job with honest employers. Logit analysis indicates that increases in moral and intrinsic motivations increase the likelihood of keeping agreements to provide …
