Dynamic Diversity Of The Tryptophan Pathway In Chlamydiae: Reductive Evolution And A Novel Operon For Tryptophan Recapture, Gary Xie, Carol A. Bonner, Roy A. Jensen

Publications and Research

The factors that accommodate the transition of different chlamydial species to the persistent state of pathogenesis include marked differences in the strategied deplyed to obtain tryptophan from host resources. Chlamydia psittaci appears to have a novel mechanism for intercepting an early intermediate of tryptophan catabolism and recycling it back to tryptophan.

The New Farm Bill: An Increase Or Decrease In Farm Program Payments?, Roger Selley Aug 2002

The New Farm Bill: An Increase Or Decrease In Farm Program Payments?, Roger Selley

Cornhusker Economics

The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (the farm bill) has been recognized as potentially providing agricultural producers with enhanced financial support. The bill has titles (sections) that address commodity programs, conservation, trade, nutrition programs, credit, rural development, research, forestry and energy. Some provisions are intended to indirectly affect producer prices and costs of production through trade promotion and research, for example. The commodity and conservation programs promise direct support for agriculture based on planting history and production, as well as payments for following specific production practices expected to conserve resources and protect the environment. The purpose of …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants: Designation Of Critical Habitat For The Topeka Shiner, Proposed Rule Aug 2002

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants: Designation Of Critical Habitat For The Topeka Shiner, Proposed Rule

Endangered Species Bulletin

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, propose designation of critical habitat pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, for the Topeka shiner (Notropis topeka). This proposal is made in response to a court settlement in Biodiversity Legal Foundation et al. v. Ralph Morganweck et al. C00–D–1180, committing the Service to submit for publication in the Federal Register a proposal to withdraw the existing ‘‘not prudent’’ critical habitat determination together with a new proposed critical habitat determination for the Topeka shiner by August 13, 2002. We are proposing to designate as critical habitat a …

Transforming Chicana/O And Latina/O Politics: Globalization, And The Formation Of Transnational Resistance In The U.S. And Chiapas, Anna Sampaio Aug 2002

Transforming Chicana/O And Latina/O Politics: Globalization, And The Formation Of Transnational Resistance In The U.S. And Chiapas, Anna Sampaio

Ethnic Studies

In 1993 Congress passed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), with great anticipation at home and abroad that the newly formed regional alliance between Mexico, the United States, and Canada would increase productivity, reduce inefficiency, and strengthen the states' economies. However, the agreement was not met with universal enthusiasm. Among many of the rural poor, campesinos, working classes, racial minorities, and indigenous populations of all three states, NAFTA's passage signaled an unprecedented move toward globalization and mounting economic pressures (Mander and Goldsmith, 1996). In particular, in Chiapas, Mexico, peasants, campesinos/farmers, and indigenous populations had for some time been under …

One of the best ways to begin to understand the cultures of the Latina/o populations of the United States is to consider the term as it has been used and appropriated over time. The term "Latino" (Spanish Latino Americana), according to David Bushnell 0970: 3) was first used by the Colombian publicist Jose Maria Torres Caicedo in 1856 (Miguel Tinker Salas, personal communication, 2001). "Latin" was used in the United States, especially in films from the 1920s through the 1960s as a cover designation that masked the origin of Mexicans and Puerto Ricans superseding the word "Spanish" to accomplish the …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

This review summarizes a collection of lactic acid bacteria that are now undergoing genomic sequencing and analysis. Summaries are presented on twenty different species, with each overview discussing the organisms fundamental and practical significance, environmental habitat, and its role in fermentation, bioprocessing, or probiotics. For those projects where genome sequence data were available by March 2002, summaries include a listing of key statistics and interesting genomic features. These efforts will revolutionize our molecular view of Gram-positive bacteria, as up to 15 genomes from the low GC content lactic acid bacteria are expected to be available in the public domain by …

Using Histomorphometric Traits Of Bone Microarchitecture In The Determination Of Biological Affinity, E. Augustus Goodman Aug 2002

Using Histomorphometric Traits Of Bone Microarchitecture In The Determination Of Biological Affinity, E. Augustus Goodman

Anthropology

This research began to establish alternate possible means for determining the biological affinity for fragmented skeletal remains between geographically disparate populations, specifically American-Caucasians and Southeast Asians. The goal is to determine the feasibility of developing a method that may be used in the field to differentiate the remains of U.S. servicemen from people of Southeast Asia. This technique is based upon differences in bone histomorphometric variables. The variables used in this research are the osteon area (On. Ar), Haversian canal area (H. Ar), and osteon population density (OPD). The conclusions reached in this research suggest that differences exist on the …

Environmental Regulation Of Growth In Black Brant, Mark Paul Herzog Aug 2002

Environmental Regulation Of Growth In Black Brant, Mark Paul Herzog

Theses (Unassigned)

Body size is an important determinant of life history traits such as survival and fecundity. There is a positive correlation between growth during the first summer and final body size in goose populations. I examined how environmental factors influence growth in Black Brant (Branta bernicla; hereafter brant) goslings. Growth declined seasonally and varied among brood-rearing areas. However, the pattern was not consistent among years. Models containing only environment and maternal effects explained 75% of variation in gosling mass, indicating that little of the observed variation in size is directly of genetic origin. Heritability did not differ from zero for both …

Effects Of Season, Sex, And Dietary Nitrogen On Muskoxen, Tim Charles Peltier Aug 2002

Effects Of Season, Sex, And Dietary Nitrogen On Muskoxen, Tim Charles Peltier

Biological Sciences

Growth and survival of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) are dependent on forage that varies in quality and quantity. One of the most limiting factors is nitrogen. In chapter 1, I predicted that growth would vary with season, sex and dietary nitrogen. While growth is highly season and results in dimorphism, it is not affected by supplemental nitrogen. In chapter 2, I predicted an inverse relationship between intake and digestibility of diets in adults. Intakes increased dramatically from spring to summer with no impact on digestibility. This resulted in increased body fat from summer to winter with little change in body protein. …

Sexual Segregation In Moose: Effects Of Incisor Morphology, Quality Of Willows, And Foraging Behavior, Douglas Frank Spaeth Aug 2002

Sexual Segregation In Moose: Effects Of Incisor Morphology, Quality Of Willows, And Foraging Behavior, Douglas Frank Spaeth

Biological Sciences

Differences in the jaw morphology of Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) may relate to sexual segregation. Male Alaskan moose had significantly wider incisor breadths than did females; however, incisor depth did not differ between sexes. Those differences in jaw architecture might relate to the diets of sexes when they are spatially segregated. Moose consume willow (Salix spp.) as a fundamental component of their diet. Smaller-diameter twigs were more digestible, had more protein, and contained less fiber than larger-diameter twigs. Conversely, no relation existed between age of twigs and digestibility. Ruminants may segregate spatially because females competitively exclude males. An experiment …

The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor Aug 2002

The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor

Biological Sciences

Weight loss and ill thrift are common problems encountered in muskox calves raised in captivity. Varied diagnostic results suggest that there is immunosuppression possibly related to trace mineral intake. This experiment evaluates the influence of a single trace element, copper, on muskox calf health and development. Muskox calves consuming a diet containing 5 ppm Cu exhibited lower weight gains, reduced survivability, depleted lymphoid tissue, thinner aortic arches, more muscle wasting and an increased occurrence of diarrhea than a group consuming the same diet but receiving injectable Cu supplementation. This study demonstrates the importance of adequate copper in the diet ensuring …

Survival And Development Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha) Embryos And Fry As Related To Egg Size And Quantitative Genetic Variation, Patrick William Malecha Aug 2002

Survival And Development Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha) Embryos And Fry As Related To Egg Size And Quantitative Genetic Variation, Patrick William Malecha

Fisheries

The effect of egg weight on survival and development of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) embryos, alevins, and fry was analyzed; in addition, embryo survival was investigated in relation to additive genetic variation. Embryonic survival to eyeing, development time to hatch, yolk weight, somatic tissue weight, yolk use rate, somatic tissue growth rate, and the survival of first-feeding fry was recorded relative to egg weight. The analyses demonstrated significant egg weight effects on development time to hatch, yolk weight, somatic tissue weight, yolk use rate, and somatic tissue growth rate on alevins. Weight and length of post-emergent fry (17 weeks post-ponding) …
