Chestnut Market Opportunities Assessing Upscale Restaurant Interest In Value-Added Chestnut Products, Food Processing Center

Food Processing Center: Reports

Chestnut trees, and consequently chestnuts, were a large part of American culture at the turn of the twentieth century. The American chestnut, which is one of four primary chestnut species--Japanese, European, and Chinese being the other three--was prominent in many parts of the country but particularly, the eastern part of the United States. The wood from the trees was commonly used in furniture making and the chestnuts from the tree were frequently included on ingredient lists from recipes used during that era. To not be familiar with and eat chestnuts then could be likened to not having heard of and …

The Effects Of Distance To The Forest Edge On Avian Communities At Ficus Pertusa (Moraceae), September 2002, Julie R. Gilbertson Sep 2002

The Effects Of Distance To The Forest Edge On Avian Communities At Ficus Pertusa (Moraceae), September 2002, Julie R. Gilbertson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study investigated the differences in bird diversity among 12 fruiting Ficus pertusa (Moraceae) trees at various distances from the forest edge in the Monteverde, Costa Rica region. Each of the 12 sites was observed for six nonconsecutive hours over a four-week study period. Bird diversity, abundance, evenness and similarity were calculated for each tree. A significant positive correlation was found between distance from the forest edge and bird diversity at the study sites (R² = 0.630; ANOVA f value = 17.036; p-value = 0.0021). Crop size was also found to have a significant relationship with diversity (R² = 0.776; …

Defining biotechnology as the use and manipulation of living organisms for the purpose of commercialisation, which includes the use of tissue culture, cell fusion, embryo transfer and recombinant DNA technology, Indira Ramaswamy detailed the market segmentation of biotechnology into health care, agriculture, industry and environmental applications and the Indian scenario vis a vis each of the segments. She described the key features of a biotechnology company and the main trend being …

On Modeling And Controlling The Effects Of Variable Labor Effort: A Theoretical Explanation Of The Truck System, William Alpert, John Stiver

Economics Working Papers

In most Industrial and Industrializing Countries, labor markets are characterized by employers offering packages of wage, non-wage, and working conditions to prospective workers. In return, workers offer to apply effort to tasks determined by employers. This paper attempts to examine these employer-employee contracts using a stockout avoidance model with employees providing variable labor effort.

The Outcome And Analysis Of 40 Cases Of Fetal Gastroschisis, Naser O. Malas, A. S. Al-Ghoweri, R. M. Shwyiat

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: This collaborative retrospective study was undertaken at Royal Medical Services Hospital, Amman, Jordan, between 1993 through to 2000. Its purpose was to assess the difference in terms of morbidity and mortality in neonates with gastroschisis delivered by cesarean section versus vaginal delivery. METHODS: The records of all neonates born with gastroschisis (n=40, 26 females, 14 males) from 1993-2000 were analyzed. The mode of delivery was noted. Those babies delivered by cesarean section (n=22) were labelled group one, while those delivered vaginally (n=18) were labelled group 2. The mean maternal age was 26.45 ± 5.97 and 28.30 ± 4.22 years …

Microbial Cellulose Utilization: Fundamentals And Biotechnology, Lee R. Lynd, Paul J. Weimer, Willem H. Van Zyl, Isak S. Pretorius

Dartmouth Scholarship

Fundamental features of microbial cellulose utilization are examined at successively higher levels of aggregation encompassing the structure and composition of cellulosic biomass, taxonomic diversity, cellulase enzyme systems, molecular biology of cellulase enzymes, physiology of cellulolytic microorganisms, ecological aspects of cellulase-degrading communities, and rate-limiting factors in nature. The methodological basis for studying microbial cellulose utilization is considered relative to quantification of cells and enzymes in the presence of solid substrates as well as apparatus and analysis for cellulose-grown continuous cultures. Quantitative description of cellulose hydrolysis is addressed with respect to adsorption of cellulase enzymes, rates of enzymatic hydrolysis, bioenergetics of microbial …

Insensible Perspiration And Oily Vegetable Humor: An Eighteenth Century Controversy Over Vegetarianism, Ken Albala

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Quack diets are nothing new. Nor have they always been easily dismissed. In eighteenth-century Italy, a virulent controversy arose over a meatless wonder diet. This controversy would eventually play itself out in the field of nutritional theory, as dietary writers crambled to incorporate the latest scientific findings into their recommendations.

Capacity-Building For Health Research In Developing Countries: A Manager's Approach, Franklin White Sep 2002

Capacity-Building For Health Research In Developing Countries: A Manager's Approach, Franklin White

Community Health Sciences

Research may be viewed as rigorous inquiry to advance knowledge and improve practices. An international commission has argued that strengthening research capacity is one of the most powerful, cost-effective, and sustainable means of advancing health and development. However, the global effort to promote research in developing countries has been mostly policy driven, and largely at the initiative of donor agencies based in developed countries. This policy approach, although essential, both contrasts with and is complementary to that of research managers, who must build capacity "from the ground up" in a variety of health service settings within countries and with differing …
