Poisonous Plants Of Tennessee, Erica Fritz Aug 2002

Poisonous Plants Of Tennessee, Erica Fritz

Honors Theses

Many poisonous plants occur within Tennessee. These plants may have an evolutionary advantage over competing plants because of the presence of toxic secondary compounds. Consequently, plant species containing poisons may occur more frequently in advanced families than in primitive families. A list was compiled of those plants that occur in Tennessee that are known to be poisonous and these numbers were compared with the total number of species within both advanced and primitive families. Tennessee poisonous plants occur in higher percentages in those families that are primitive and moderately advanced than in those that are advanced.

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

A multi-method assessment on food security in the Monteverde Zone. Our research focused on food insecurity and perceptions of nutrition and food resources in the Monteverde Zone. Information was collected through various methods, including an anthropometric assessment of nutritional status in San Luis, semi-structured interviews with mothers regarding what foods are considered healthy and what they feed their children, sixty-seven returned Radimer/Cornell Measure of Hunger and Food Insecurity Scales, and a focus group with seven mothers of young children concerning the idea of a community garden. A priority of the research was exploring solutions to improving nutrition and access to …

Retrospective, exploratory study of access and utilization of health care services for pregnant women in the Monteverde Community. The purpose of this analysis is to conduct a retrospective, exploratory study of access and utilization of health care services from the prenatal period through parturition in the Monteverde Community. Initial interviews indicated that although universal health care is available to all women in the Monteverde zone through the CAJA, many women were not satisfied with the services they received and still others chose private physicians for care. A quantitative survey tool was utilized to assess the satisfaction of women with clinic …

Recreation Options For Youth In The Monteverde Region, August 4, 2002, Lauren Schmidt, Allison Hayes, Sarah Adkins, Nihal Hassan

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

A study on the recreation and activity opportunities for the youth in the MonteverdeZone. In an open community meeting held Monday, July 1, 2002, members of the community in the Monteverde Zone (including Monteverde, Cerro Plano, Santa Elena, San Luis and Los Llanos), stressed that one of the major problems the community is facing is a lack of recreational activities for youth. They emphasized the fact that drugs and teenage pregnancies are an issue here in the Monteverde Zone, and it is their opinion that the lack of positive activities for youth has a direct correlation. The research team had …

An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan Aug 2002

An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan

Theses and Dissertations

Unlike most other host-specific mycoplasmas, Mycoplasma gallinarum exists as a commensal with a host range including most poultry as well as some mammals. This property of M. gallinarum may reflect unique mechanisms for its colonization and persistence in hosts. Whereas M. gallinarum shows leucine and arginine aminopeptidase activity, the genes encoding the enzymes had not been cloned and characterized. We identified an aminopeptidase gene (APN) by oligonucleotide hybridization to a genomic library of M. gallinarum in lambda ZAPII bacteriophage. Nucleotide sequence analysis of overlapping phage clones identified a 1,362 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative leucine aminopeptidase gene. …

Incorporating High Nitrate Feed Into Feeding Programs, Trey Patterson Aug 2002

Incorporating High Nitrate Feed Into Feeding Programs, Trey Patterson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

When drought hits and feed is short, producers wonder if they can provide high nitrate feeds to their cattle. The answer is “Yes, if you know what you’re doing.” Nitrates can be very dangerous to cattle, causing reduced performance, abortions, and death. Know the toxicity symptoms and toxic levels of nitrates before using high nitrate feedstuffs in your feeding program. Refer to SDSU Extension Extra 4015 (Nitrate Poisoning of Livestock) for specifics regarding nitrate poisoning and guidelines for safe nitrate levels in animal diets. While nitrates feeds are dangerous to cattle, they can be fed if properly managed. Toxic effects …

Limit-Feeding Cows In A Drylot, Cody Wright Aug 2002

Limit-Feeding Cows In A Drylot, Cody Wright

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Providing forage for cow herds is normally paramount to maintaining a desirable level of productivity. But during drought years, the supply of standing and harvested forages may be extremely limited and/or very expensive. Relocating the cow herd into drylot is a management alternative that may allow producers to take advantage of inexpensive grains and byproduct feeds to formulate cost effective cow diets.

Biological Sciences

This review summarizes a collection of lactic acid bacteria that are now undergoing genomic sequencing and analysis. Summaries are presented on twenty different species, with each overview discussing the organisms fundamental and practical significance, environmental habitat, and its role in fermentation, bioprocessing, or probiotics. For those projects where genome sequence data were available by March 2002, summaries include a listing of key statistics and interesting genomic features. These efforts will revolutionize our molecular view of Gram-positive bacteria, as up to 15 genomes from the low GC content lactic acid bacteria are expected to be available in the public domain by …

Nuclear Transformation Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii To Allow For Studies On Circadian Expression Of The Β-Tubulin Gene, Mohammed Khan Aug 2002

Nuclear Transformation Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii To Allow For Studies On Circadian Expression Of The Β-Tubulin Gene, Mohammed Khan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Circadian rhythms are rhythms that are capable of free-running in constant conditions with a period of approximately 24 hours, that are able to compensate temperature effects on their periods, and that have the ability to entrain to daily light-dark and/or temperature cycle. In order to explore the circadian output pathway that regulates β-tubulin gene expression in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a nuclear transformation of the organism was performed with a β-tubulin promoter:reporter gene construct. To increase the efficiency of the selection, a cotransformation procedure was adapted with ble, an antibiotic resistance gene. To achieve maximum transformation efficiency, a cell wall-less mutant of …

The Relationship Of Demographic Characteristics To Consumer Knowledge Of Diet And Health Relationships To Intake Of Soy Foods And Soy Supplements, Ashlyn K. Hosokawa Aug 2002

The Relationship Of Demographic Characteristics To Consumer Knowledge Of Diet And Health Relationships To Intake Of Soy Foods And Soy Supplements, Ashlyn K. Hosokawa

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1999, the FDA approved a health claim for a relationship between intake of 25 grams of soy protein per day and reduced risk of heart disease. Literature suggests that consumers are increasingly krtowledgeable about diet and disease risk factors. While gender, age, race, and family history cannot be altered, diet may be changed to decrease risks. This study explored the relationship of demographic characteristics to consumer knowledge and use of some of the more popular soy products and supplements. Surveys were completed by a random sample of 100 attendees at area festivals and 100 nutrition professionals at a national …
