Artificial Immune System (AIS) is a novel evolutionary paradigm inspired by the biological aspects of the immune system. The human immune system has motivated scientists and engineers for finding powerful information processing algorithms that has solved complex engineering tasks. This paper discusses two concepts. (a) The behavioral management of artificial intelligence (AI) namely the intelligent multi agent systems, (b) The evolutionary computation called the artificial immune system that imitates the biological theory called the immune system. The outcome of this research is an Artificial Immune System based Intelligent Multi Agent Model named AISIMAM that solves agent-based applications. The model is …

High Product Yield In A Narrow Column Configuration Of Carbon Nanotubes: A Pathway For Nanosynthetic Machine, M. Gordon, K.S.V. Santhanam Jan 2002

High Product Yield In A Narrow Column Configuration Of Carbon Nanotubes: A Pathway For Nanosynthetic Machine, M. Gordon, K.S.V. Santhanam

Presentations and other scholarship

Multiwalled functionalized carbon nanotubes have been aligned in a narrow column configuration of 3.1 cm X 0.2 cm through which the organic reactants are allowed to travel through gravity. The products coming out of the column have been examined by GC/MS and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. With organic reactants such as aniline and hydrogen peroxide in 1:1 molar ratio, a high yield of azo compound has been obtained through the coupling of nitrosobenzene and aniline. This suggests that the column configuration is ideal for organic synthesis and for the development of nanosynthetic machines.

Catalyzed Oxidation Of Aniline By Hydrogen Peroxide In The Presence Of Cnts: A Possible Case Of A Nanodimension Reaction, M. Croston, J. Langston, G. Takacs, T.C. Morrill

Presentations and other scholarship

The oxidation of aniline by hydrogen peroxide produces nitrosobenzene as the initial product, which undergoes further oxidation to nitrobenzene. The nitrosobenzene formation is catalyzed by functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) followed by a coupling reaction between nitrosobenzene and aniline to produce azobenzene. This reaction proceeds rapidly resulting in the UV-VIS absorption spectrum showing a maxima at 327 nm and 425 nm. The nitrosobenzene yield in the presence of CNTs is controlled by the amount present in the medium. As the reaction is not catalyzed by unfunctionalized CNTs or graphitic particles, the uniqueness of the functionalized multiwalled CNTs in this catalysis …

Blurring The Lines Of The Danger Zone: The Impact Of Kendra's Law On The Rights Of The Nonviolent Mentally Ill, Kristina M. Campbell

Journal Articles

When the lives of Kendra Webdale and Andrew Goldstein crossed paths in a New York City subway on January 3, 1999, no one could have predicted the tragic results of their brief encounter, nor the political and legal aftermath the events of that day would spur. According to eyewitnesses, Goldstein, a twenty-nine year old man with a long history of psychiatric illness,' approached Webdale, a thirty-two year old woman, to ask her the time as she waited for an uptown train. Goldstein then suddenly and- inexplicably pushed Webdale in front of the approaching train; she died instantly. 2 Public outrage …

Introduction: Theorizing The Connections Among Systems Of Subordination, Nancy Levit Jan 2002

Introduction: Theorizing The Connections Among Systems Of Subordination, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

Theorizing the Connections Among Systems of Subordination introduces a symposium that addresses issues on the leading edge of identity theory, race theory, and critical social theory. It explains the concepts of anti-essentialism, intersectionality, multiple consciousness, multi-dimensionality, and post-intersectionality. It investigates the ways specific types of oppression - such as racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia - support and feed off of one another. It explores the dynamics of subordination that make different forms of subordination connected to each other - the mechanisms by which subordinating systems buttress each other. Where one sees sexism, one frequently can find racism; where classism exists, …

Insurance Implications Of September 11 And Possible Responses, Jeffrey E. Thomas Jan 2002

Insurance Implications Of September 11 And Possible Responses, Jeffrey E. Thomas

Faculty Works

September 11 was a "defining moment" for this generation. The graphic images of that day will forever remain seared into people's individual and collective consciousness. Americans responded in many ways, both individually and collectively. The government, with nearly unanimous public support, immediately responded by declaring "war" on terrorism and by adopting measures to provide relief for victims of the attack.

September 11 was also a defining moment for the insurance industry. It was "the largest single insured event in history." Insurance companies are expected to pay some $50 billion to victims of the attack -more than eight times what the …

Fiber Optic Sensor Response To High Levels Of Fat In Cream, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Frederick A. Payne, Clair L. Hicks, M. Pinar Mengüç, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A light backscatter technique using optical fibers to deliver and receive light was investigated for measuring the milkfat content of unhomogenized cream. Light backscatter through cream at wavelengths of 450 to 900 nm was measured for fiber separation distances from 2 to 6.5 mm and for cream containing 10 to ~40 weight percent (wt%) milkfat. Unhomogenized cream (~40 wt% milkfat) was mixed with skim milk (~0.05 wt% milkfat) to yield samples with five different milkfat levels. Three optical response models were tested for correlation with milkfat content: one using the light intensity measurement at a single separation distance, the second …

Two Steps Forward And One Step Back: Conflict And Contradiction In Post-War Guatemala (Review Essay), Kristin Marsh Jan 2002

Two Steps Forward And One Step Back: Conflict And Contradiction In Post-War Guatemala (Review Essay), Kristin Marsh

History and American Studies Articles

What are the real prospects for lasting peace and greater prosperity in post-war Guatemala? This is the central question underlying Susanne Jonas's Of Centaurs and Doves and Christopher Chase-Dunn, Susanne Jonas, and Nelson Amaro's Globalization on the Ground. As events continue to unfold for Guatemalans, these scholars tackle the very current issues of democratization, development, justice, and peace in post-war Guatemalan society. The cruel irony is that the very urgency with which these issues must be addressed belies any concrete prediction or even refined characterization of the existing situation.

Ownership Issues In The Digital Divide, Yale M. Braunstein

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Unlike broadcast and telecommunications media, the Internet has developed largely without governmental regulation both in terms of service and content providers. Major communications and media firms essentially control both access to and content of the Internet. Policies to promote access to the Internet are crucial in closing the gap in the digital divide. This article focuses on how the concentration of ownership impacts Internet access and content, as well as on how industry structure affects broadband access.

Lawyers And Trust In Business Alliances, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

This Article attempts a first step in filling the gap in the legal literature about lawyers and strategic business alliances. Part I describes the distinctive nature of strategic alliances. Part II discusses why strategic alliances pose unique problems for lawyers. Part III considers how lawyers' negotiation tactics can enhance rather than erode trust between the parties in alliances. Part IV suggests how lawyers can draft substantive contract terms that foster trust and cooperation in alliances. Part V explores how law schools and continuing legal education can train lawyers to perform better not only in strategic business alliances but in all …

Four Anharmonic Oscillators On A Circle, J. N. Boyd, R. G. Hudepohl, P. N. Raychowdhury

Virginia Journal of Science

Four identical, uniformly separated particles interconnected by ideal anharmonic springs are constrained to move on a fixed, frictionless circular track. The Lagrangian for the system is written and then transformed by matrix operations suggested by the symmetry of the arrangement of springs and particles. The equations of motion derived from the transformed Lagrangian yield four natural frequencies of motion.

Identification Of Subsonic P-Waves, Paul Michaels Jan 2002

Identification Of Subsonic P-Waves, Paul Michaels

CGISS Publications and Presentations

A field trial was conducted to test the existence of subsonic (Vp <331 m>/s) P-waves previously reported in the literature. A 1-m-long reverse profile was acquired with three-component (3C) geophones on a sandy silt (unified classification ML). The silt had a porosity of 54%, a degree of water saturation of 63%, and a plasticity index of 10. No subsonic P-waves were observed, although high frequency (up to 1200 Hz) Rayleigh waves were identified by hodogram analysis. These surface waves were observed with horizontal velocities that varied from 40 to 200 m/s. Hodogram observations and theory suggest that …

The Hiv Protease Inhibitor Saquinavir Impairs Lipid Metabolism And Glucose Transport In Cultured Adipocytes, S. Ranganathan, Philip A. Kern Jan 2002

The Hiv Protease Inhibitor Saquinavir Impairs Lipid Metabolism And Glucose Transport In Cultured Adipocytes, S. Ranganathan, Philip A. Kern

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Treatment of HIV infection using protease inhibitors is frequently associated with lipodystrophy and impaired lipid and glucose metabolism. We examined the effect of saquinavir, one of the protease inhibitors, on lipid metabolism and glucose transport in cultured adipocytes. Saquinavir inhibited lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in 3T3-F442A and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The inhibition of LPL was 81% at a concentration of 20 μg/ml. Another closely related drug, indinavir, had a small inhibitory effect. Saquinavir also inhibited the biosynthesis of lipids from [14C]-acetate. Saquinavir increased the lipolysis. Saquinavir had no significant effect on the cellular protein synthesis or protein content. Saquinavir …

A Proposed Undergraduate Bioinformatics Curriculum For Computer Scientists, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer, Dan E. Krane, Oscar Garcia

Kno.e.sis Publications

Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of experimental molecular biology and biochemistry, and from the the artificial intelligence, database, and algorithms disciplines of computer science. Largely because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics research, academia has been slow to respond to strong industry and government demands for trained scientists to develop and apply novel bioinformatics techniques to the rapidly-growing, freely-available repositories of genetic and proteomic data. While some institutions are responding to this demand by establishing graduate programs in bioinformatics, the entrance barriers for these programs are high, largely due to …
