Codeswitching In Antonio Muñoz Molina’S Carlota Fainberg: Determiner Gender And Noun Phrase Status, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Codeswitching between determiner and noun in which the language of …

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii Jan 2002

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

For most of us, the collapse of the World Trade Center towers exists at the outermost edge of human comprehension. Even after one visits Ground Zero, the events of 9/11 retain a surreal quality, invoking feelings beyond words as one tries to contemplate losses immeasurable with numbers. Indeed, the insurance losses are insignificant when compared to the human tragedies caused by the terrorist attacks-and in insurance terms, we witnessed the most costly, complex events to transpire in a single day in the history of the planet. Many years will pass before all the insurance ramifications of 9/11 are sorted out.

The Challenge Facing Parents And Coaches In Youth Sports: Assuring Children Fun And Equal Opportunity, Douglas E. Abrams Jan 2002

The Challenge Facing Parents And Coaches In Youth Sports: Assuring Children Fun And Equal Opportunity, Douglas E. Abrams

Faculty Publications

Youth sports today brings both good and bad news. The good news is that organized sports programs enhance the vitality of communities large and small because twenty-five to thirty million children, nearly half of all American youngsters, join at least one program in any given year. At some time during their childhood and adolescence, nearly all children have some experience with organized sports. Outside the home and schools, no other activity reaches so many children from coast to coast.

Analysis Of Transient Response Of Saturated Porous Elastic Soil Under Cyclic Loading Using Element-Free Galerkin Method, M.R. Karim, T. Nogami, J.G. Wang Jan 2002

Analysis Of Transient Response Of Saturated Porous Elastic Soil Under Cyclic Loading Using Element-Free Galerkin Method, M.R. Karim, T. Nogami, J.G. Wang

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A two-dimensional numerical procedure is presented to analyse the transient response of saturated porous elastic soil layer under cyclic loading. The procedure is based on the element-free Galerkin method and incorporated into the periodic conditions (temporal and spatial periodicity). Its shape function is constructed by moving least-square approximants, essential boundary conditions are implemented through Lagrange multipliers and the periodic conditions are implemented through a revised variational formulation. Time domain is discretized through the Crank-Nicolson scheme. Analytical solutions are developed to assess the effectiveness and accuracy of the current procedure in one and two dimensions. For only temporal periodic problems, a …

Comparative Analysis Of Regenerants Between Single And Naked Meristem (Scalps) Of Musa Acuminata Var. Berangan, N.A. Juli, Norzulaani Khalid Jan 2002

Comparative Analysis Of Regenerants Between Single And Naked Meristem (Scalps) Of Musa Acuminata Var. Berangan, N.A. Juli, Norzulaani Khalid

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The regeneration capacity of banana meristem in vitro was compared between single meristem and scalp methods. Scalps were induced on p4 media containing MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) components supplemented with coconut water and high concentration of benzyl amino purine (BAP) (75μM). The number of regenerated shoots produced from scalps was six-fold higher than that generated from single meristems. A comparison of the growth response upon gibberelic acid (GA3) treatment was made between plantlets derived from both methods to detect dwarf off-types. The difference in height and the number of leaves between plantlets from both sources was statistically insignificant. On …

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The collaboration in science and technology (S&T) is fast emerging in the scientific world. India recognized the importance of international scientific collaboration in S&T quite early and has signed a number of S&T agreements with South East Asian countries. In this paper, the collaboration is presented through the analysis of co-authored research papers published during the period 1996 to 2000 in the journals covered by the Science Citation Index. The study covers the nature and the areas of S&T collaborations, institutions involved, and the impact of these collaborations on their individual fields. It is revealed that a total of 329 …

The Effects Of Administrative Factors On Police Officer Job Performance, Irick Anthony Geary Jr. Jan 2002

The Effects Of Administrative Factors On Police Officer Job Performance, Irick Anthony Geary Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The topic of police management and its effect on officer arrest rates is an important issue that has not received the level of attention it deserves. There is an abundance of available training and a push for better trained police executives. In the present study the relationship between police administrative factors and officer arrest rates are addressed using data from a national probability sample of police departments.

The study uses ordinary least squares regression to analyze the independent relationship between police administrative factors, as measured by the Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics, and officer arrest rates, as measured by …

The Second Coming Of Intellectual Property Rights In China, Peter K. Yu Jan 2002

The Second Coming Of Intellectual Property Rights In China, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

This Article traces the development of intellectual property rights in China since the country’s reopening in the late 1970s. Part I provides a brief history of the Chinese intellectual property system and examines the various intellectual property disputes between China and the United States in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. This Part argues that the contemporary Chinese intellectual property system was not developed until intellectual property rights reemerged in China in the late 1970s. Part II discusses the causes of the piracy and counterfeiting problem in China. By focusing on the significant political, social, economic, cultural, and ideological …

Uncharted Terrain: The Intersection Of Privatization And Welfare, Rebecca L. Scharf, Henry Freedman, Mary R. Mannix, Marc Cohan Jan 2002

Uncharted Terrain: The Intersection Of Privatization And Welfare, Rebecca L. Scharf, Henry Freedman, Mary R. Mannix, Marc Cohan

Scholarly Works

Welfare, a mainstay of legal services practice, is cutting edge again. Clients need help negotiating a system that devolution, discretion, and privatization have changed radically. Public officials need help in this new environment to "get it right," so that programs achieve the laudable goals ascribed to them.

Privatization creates special challenges for welfare advocates. New players, ranging from neighborhood nonprofit organizations to churches to multinational corporations, are making decisions that affect clients' vital interests. New legal issues, ranging from state action to public contracting compliance, can arise. Accountability and transparency, difficult to achieve in the governance of traditional welfare programs, …

“Owing To The Extreme Youth Of The Accused”: The Changing Legal Response To Juvenile Homicide, David S. Tanenhaus, Steven A. Drizin Jan 2002

“Owing To The Extreme Youth Of The Accused”: The Changing Legal Response To Juvenile Homicide, David S. Tanenhaus, Steven A. Drizin

Scholarly Works

In this essay, the authors seek to dispel the myth that the juvenile court was never intended to deal with serious and violent offenders; a myth that has largely been unchallenged, especially in the mainstream media, and one that critics of the juvenile court have used to undermine its legitimacy. The discovery of homicide data from the Chicago police department from the early twentieth century, the era in which modern juvenile justice came of age, provides us with new historical date with which to put this dangerous myth to rest, by showing that the nation’s model juvenile court—the Cook County …

The Un-Balanced Fourth Amendment: A Cultural Study Of The Drug War, Racial Profiling And Arvizu, Frank Rudy Cooper Jan 2002

The Un-Balanced Fourth Amendment: A Cultural Study Of The Drug War, Racial Profiling And Arvizu, Frank Rudy Cooper

Scholarly Works

In this Article, Professor Frank Rudy Cooper provides a cultural studies approach to the encoding and decoding of the drug war that will allow us to draw important conclusions about the effects of the drug war on the Court. In Part I of this Article, he describes how the field of cultural studies reads popular culture through the analytical tools of "encoding" and "decoding." In Part II, he analyzes why and how law enforcement has encoded the drug war as requiring increased prosecution of drug users and drug dealers. In Part III, he considers how the Court's decoding of law …

Understanding "Depolicing": Symbiosis Theory And Critical Cultural Theory, Frank Rudy Cooper Jan 2002

Understanding "Depolicing": Symbiosis Theory And Critical Cultural Theory, Frank Rudy Cooper

Scholarly Works

Doctrinal analyses help us understand what law does. Identity theory helps us understand why law operates in certain ways. Cultural studies can help us understand that where law operates is crucial to both how it operates, and on whom.

Nancy Ehrenreich's Subordination and Symbiosis: Mechanisms of Mutual Support Between Subordinating Systems is especially valuable because her symbiosis theory expands identity theory. Ehrenreich turns our attention to the subjectivities of those who are partly subordinated but mostly privileged-those who accept their own oppression in return for the "compensation" of being able to use the law to subordinate others. Nonetheless, symbiosis theory …

World Trade, Intellectual Property, And The Global Elites: An Introduction, Peter K. Yu Jan 2002

World Trade, Intellectual Property, And The Global Elites: An Introduction, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Extract:

Traditionally, intellectual property lawmaking is a matter of domestic affairs. Without external interference, governments make value judgments as to what would best promote the creation and dissemination of intellectual works in their own countries. Combined together, these disparate judgments form an intellectual property system that is tailored to the country's level of wealth, economic structure, technological capability, political system, and cultural tradition.

To protect authors and inventors, governments sometimes need to make adjustments to their intellectual property systems in exchange for better protection abroad. In those scenarios, policymakers often evaluate the adjustments carefully to make sure that they correspond …

Bridging The Digital Divide: Equality In The Information Age, Peter K. Yu Jan 2002

Bridging The Digital Divide: Equality In The Information Age, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

The digital revolution has transformed the lives of many, but also has left untouched the lives of many others. As a result, a large segment of the world population misses out on the tremendous political, social, economic, educational, and career opportunities created by the digital revolution. This gap between the information haves and have-nots is commonly referred to as the digital divide.

Although evidence suggested that the digital divide in the United States is closing, the same is not true for the less developed countries. In light of the alarming disparities between the information haves and have-nots, the Howard M. …
