Genesis And Morphology Of Soil Pendants In Quaternary Landforms Of Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, Amy Lynn Brock
Genesis And Morphology Of Soil Pendants In Quaternary Landforms Of Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, Amy Lynn Brock
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Five geomorphic surfaces present in the northern Pahranagat Valley, Lincoln County, Nevada range in age from Early Pleistocene to Recent (Q1-Q5) and vary in clast lithology from dolomite to volcanic tephras. Two chronosequences and 5 lithosequences were compared to evaluate micro and macromorphic characteristics and development of soil pendants. This study presents a new interpretation for soil pendant development. Key features observed in the Pahranagat Valley pendants provide evidence for precipitation at the clast-pendant contact suggesting that newer deposits are not always found at the pendant terminus as other studies have assumed. These features include a void at the clast-pendant …

Prevailing Winds: Radical Activism And The American Indian Movement., David Kent Calfee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1968 a number of Chippewa Indians met in Minneapolis, Minnesota to discuss some of the problems they faced in their communities. This meeting gave birth to the American Indian Movement. From 1968 to 1974, the American Indian Movement embarked on a series of radical protests designed to draw attention to the concerns of American Indians and force the Federal government into acting on their behalf. Unfortunately, these protests brought about a backlash from Federal law enforcement agencies that destroyed the American Indian Movement's national power structure.

Flashover voltage, lifetimes, and switch performance of insulators utilizing square thin and thick film electrodes were examined to determine the viability of using thin electrodes for reliable surface discharge switching. Gold, silver, and platinum were sputtered (0.25 µm) and screen printed (15 µm) onto Al2O3, TiO2, and modified BaTiO3 (MBT), then tested in air at 105 Pa, under vacuum (10-3/ torr), and while immersed in an insulating fluid, SF-2 (manufactured by 3M). For the measured range of 0.5 to 3 mm in air, the flashover voltage for all three insulators …
The Effects Of Televised Violence On Students, Bobbi Jo Kenyon
The Effects Of Televised Violence On Students, Bobbi Jo Kenyon
Masters Theses
Violence among our youth today has skyrocketed, and we continue to hear reports of violent acts and aggressive behavior, especially in our schools. This growing level of negative behavior has prompted many educators and communities to look for an explanation. One suggestion often proposed is that our youth learn violent and antisocial behaviors by watching televised violence.
This paper examines over forty years of laboratory and field research on the effects of televised violence on children. The vast majority of studies conclude that televised violence can lead to behaviors such as aggressiveness, desensitization, and fearfulness. These findings were then compared …

Solving Legal Issues In Electronic Government: Jurisdiction, Regulation, Governance, John D. Gregory
Solving Legal Issues In Electronic Government: Jurisdiction, Regulation, Governance, John D. Gregory
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This paper looks at who can be governed, what can be governed, and how it can be governed in an electronic world. Whether law aims to be enabling (i.e., confirming the ground rules and the legal effectiveness of general conduct) or normative (i.e., imposing standards of conduct on more or less willing subjects), the new media presents difficulties for its rational evolution.
These are distinct questions from those raised by government online. Electronic service delivery issues tend to focus on how government can carry on its traditional programs using electronic means and how the law can support it in doing …
Global Trecs: The Regulation Of International Trade In Cyberspace, J. Steele
Global Trecs: The Regulation Of International Trade In Cyberspace, J. Steele
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This paper provides an overview of trade-related aspects of electronic commerce, and examines three approaches for regulating international trade in cyber- space. A model which integrates these approaches is then proposed, emphasizing private standards of self-regula- tion within a broader public framework of minimal background standards. A summary of potential areas of conflict between competing regulatory approaches fol- lows, and the paper concludes that both the WTO and the OECD have important roles to play in the develop- ment of international consensus towards a harmonized framework for the regulation of global TRECs.
M-Commerce: The Notion Of Consumer Consent In Receiving Location-Based Advertising, Eloïse Gratton
M-Commerce: The Notion Of Consumer Consent In Receiving Location-Based Advertising, Eloïse Gratton
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
The development of location-based advertising, for all its convenience and usefulness, introduces new and heightened privacy risks for consumers that must be addressed. The portability of wireless devices and the ubiquity of their applications, coupled with an ability to pinpoint the location of wireless users and reveal it to others, could produce a system where the everyday activities and movements of these users are tracked and recorded. Wireless users would receive unanticipated advertising messages on their wireless device, commonly referred to as ‘‘wireless spam’’, generally considered a form of privacy violation.
In order to obtain a valid consent from the …
The New Singapore Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy: The Context Of The Common Law And Icann's Udrp, Richard Wu
The New Singapore Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy: The Context Of The Common Law And Icann's Udrp, Richard Wu
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
In this article, I will analyse the salient features of the Policy and evaluate the extent to which they match international practice. I will focus, in particular, upon the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and the rules made under the UDRP. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the international body responsible for domain name management, adopted both in 1999. As the nature of domain name disputes and dispute resolution rules are very similar in different countries, domain name disputes are becoming a global phenomenon, leading to the development of a kind of ‘‘Internet common law’’. …
Solution-Phase Synthesis Of Tertiary Amines Via Reductive Amination-Alkylation With Ethyl P-Aminobenzoate, Kristen Harwood
Solution-Phase Synthesis Of Tertiary Amines Via Reductive Amination-Alkylation With Ethyl P-Aminobenzoate, Kristen Harwood
Theses
Combinatorial chemistry is a means of rapidly generating large numbers of diverse molecules for the identification of novel molecular properties. This study will describe the attempt to synthesize, characterize and purify of a library of tertiary amine derivatives of ethyl p-aminobenzoate by solution-phase combinatorial synthesis. In this study, indirect reductive amination and subsequent alkylation of ethyl p-aminobenzoate is expected to produce thirty-five structurally related analogs. HPLC and LC-MS analysis of the resultant library however, shows that reduction of the imine intermediates with sodium triacetoxyborohydride also results in reduction of the ester functionality which prevents the subsequent alkylation reaction. A mechanism …

Effect Of Peptidoglycan-Polysaccharide Complex On Reproductive Efficiency And Mastitis In Sheep, Ida Holaskova
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Bacterial infections associated with mastitis reduce pregnancies in cattle. Effects on pregnancy and incidence of mastitis in sheep were investigated after immunization with peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS) and killed cells from Strep. pyogenes. Rambouillet (n = 100) and mixed breed (n = 18) ewe lambs were immunized (∼d42 and 22 before breeding) with PG-PS (30mugPG/kg/bw) or killed cells or were not immunized (Control, n = 117). IgG antibodies were detected by ELISA. Ewes were bred at synchronized estrus. All immunized and half of non-immunized ewes were challenged with PG-PS (60mugPG/kg/bw) d5 after breeding. Although proportion of ewes pregnant at d42 did not …
Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Arcobacter Butzleri In Groundwater Microcosms, Robert Darrell Mcelwain
Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Arcobacter Butzleri In Groundwater Microcosms, Robert Darrell Mcelwain
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Arcobacter butzleri may be an etiological agent of gastroenteritis. However, relatively little is known about the persistence and ecology of this genus, particularly in groundwater. In laboratory studies it was determined that the survival of A. butzleri in groundwater can exceed that of the traditional indicator organism, Escherichia coli. An inverse relationship between survival and water temperature was observed for both organisms, but the persistence of A. butzleri exceeded that of E. coli at 5, 15, and 25°C. Selective media for the isolation of Arcobacter spp., while sensitive enough to recover stressed cells, proved ineffective at reducing background flora. Only …

Fiber Reinforced Composites Of A Novel Pendent Polyimide: Optimum Processing And Mechanical Properties, Akshay Kamdar
Theses
A 2-component polyimide [3,4'-ODA + 4,4'-ODPA], a 3-component "parent" polyimide [3,4'-ODA + 4,4'-ODPA + 10 mol % Mellitic acid dianhydride (MADA)] and a 4-component "pendent" polyimide [3,4'-ODA + 4,4'-ODPA + 10 mol % MADA + 10 mol % Zr] were synthesized and characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Since temperature and time are critical factors influencing the thermal and mechanical properties of the final polyimide, it is important to have detailed information on the best time-temperature conditions for imidization and cure in order to optimize the processing and properties of …
Analysis And Hardware Implementation Of Color Map Inversion Algorithms, Michael Martin
Analysis And Hardware Implementation Of Color Map Inversion Algorithms, Michael Martin
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate several algorithms that are used to compute the inverse of a forward printer map. The forward printer map models the printer by mapping points in the printer's input color space to points in the printer's output color space. The inverse of this forward map is required to convert input color specifications in a device-independent color space to a color in the printer's device-dependent color space before being presented to the print engine. The accuracy of the inverse printer map directly affects the accuracy of the reproduced colors. Therefore, any measured change in …
A Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Simulation Of A Synthetic Aperture Ground Penetrating Radar System, James Iii Jeter
A Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Simulation Of A Synthetic Aperture Ground Penetrating Radar System, James Iii Jeter
Theses
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a useful tool for imaging the area below the Earth's surface. GPR works on the same principle as traditional radar, evaluating the electromagnetic returns reflected from an object or scene of interest to determine characteristics of the object that reflected the signal. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a technique which combines radar returns of a given scene collected at several positions. By compiling the information contained in the returns, an image of a scene can be generated. Combining these two concepts allows us to create an image of an underground scene. Air Force Research Lab, …

Picasso: The Use Of Network Delay Compensation To Improve The Response Of A Tele-Robotic Application, Sara North
Theses
This thesis shows the benefits of network delay compensation over an arbitrary Internet connection for a tele-robotic application. The tele-robotic system, named Picasso, is set up in the Systems Laboratory of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Picasso is a robotic arm that users can connect to via the Internet and draw with. This thesis demonstrates that varying the arm speed based on the predicted time-to-next packet results in smoother motion by the arm and a more accurate representation of what the user is drawing on the screen. The method chosen to predict the time-to-next packet …
A Study Of Clutter Reduction Techniques In Wide Bandwidth Hf/Vhf Deep Ground Penetrating Radar, Darien Hammett
A Study Of Clutter Reduction Techniques In Wide Bandwidth Hf/Vhf Deep Ground Penetrating Radar, Darien Hammett
Theses
Reducing clutter is one of the most daunting problems a radar processing engineer faces. Clutter causes a significant problem when attempting to detect sub-surface targets, as any significant change in the ground dielectric will produce a return at the receiver. The difficulty in reducing the clutter is compounded by the fact that the spectral characteristics of the clutter are similar to that of the target. While there are many methods that exist to reduce clutter, few do not require a priori information of either the target or the clutter. There are applications, of interest to the electromagnetic community, that are …
Passive Amplitude-Modulated Microwave Backscatter Modulation System, Aaron Thompson
Passive Amplitude-Modulated Microwave Backscatter Modulation System, Aaron Thompson
Theses
Barcode technology is slowly being replaced with transponder tags that have many benefits over barcodes. Four issues with transponder tags are battery life, power requirement, range of communication, and physical size. Microwave backscatter modulation (MBM) is used throughout industry to reduce the power requirement and size on the transponder tags while compromising range. Researchers and designers of current transponder tags typically utilize a passive carrier-present carrier-absent (CPCA) reflection of the reader's carrier wave, or their transponder design uses an active backscatter system with an amplifier and circular polarization modulation. This research project develops a communication system that mixes a reader's …

Study Of The Crystallization Behavior Of Polyethylene Oxide In Compatibilized And Uncompatibilized Polypropylene/Polyethylene Oxide Blends, Subramanian Iyer
Theses
Compatibilization of incompatible isotactic polypropylene (iPP)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) is studied with an emphasis on the crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide. An attempt is made to correlate the crystallization data for PEO obtained from optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and dynamic mechanical analysis. PEO and iPP are incompatible in the temperature range -50C to 200C. iPP was used as the matrix while PEO was used as the dispersed phase. Experimental observations demonstrated that PEO underwent fractionated crystallization in the blends in the temperature region from -10C to 40C when cooled at a rate of 10C/min. PEO domains …
