Optimal Design Of A 2.4 Ghz Cmos Low Noise Amplifier, Sharmila Sridharan Aug 2002

Optimal Design Of A 2.4 Ghz Cmos Low Noise Amplifier, Sharmila Sridharan

Theses

In most RF receivers, the Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) is normally the first component, whose performance is very critical. For the LNA architecture that uses source degeneration inductors and cascode topology, the performance depends largely on the performance of the inductors. All the parasitics associated with the inductors should be thoroughly analyzed and taken into consideration while designing the LNA. The work presented in this thesis can be broadly classified as follows: optimization of the LNA design with respect to all the parasitics associated with the on-chip spiral inductors, modeling high performance inductors, which are embedded in the silicon substrate …

A 21st Century Security Architecture For The Americas: Multilateral Cooperation, Liberal Peace, And Soft Power, Joseph R. Nunez Colonel Aug 2002

A 21st Century Security Architecture For The Americas: Multilateral Cooperation, Liberal Peace, And Soft Power, Joseph R. Nunez Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph is a constructive response to the question of "How can the United States best develop security cooperation within the Americas?" The author develops the necessary background to make the persuasive argument that it is time for the United States to employ strategic restraint and reassurance of allies to develop a new security architecture that is effective and efficient, not to mention reflective of our values and interests. The threats and challenges articulated are no longer state versus state on a path to eventual war, but more internal, where weak institutions struggle to deal with terrorism, natural disasters, governmental …

Fine Particle Flotation For Florida Dolomitic Phosphate Pebbles, Zhengxing Gu Aug 2002

Fine Particle Flotation For Florida Dolomitic Phosphate Pebbles, Zhengxing Gu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble sample was processed using a 1.2 liter stirrer-tank flotation cell and 2-in ID packed flotation column aiming at achieving a phosphate concentrate containing more than 30% P2O 5 and less than 1.0% MgO contents at high P2O5 recovery.;The characteristics of fatty acid collector, FA-12 and a newly developed PA-31 collector were evaluated for frothability and dolomite flotation rate. The evaluation results show that both reagents have high frothability, but PA-31 has much stronger frothability than FA-12, and higher selectivity in separating dolomite from phosphate mineral.;The mineralogical study indicates that the phosphate pebble sample needs to …

Phase Equilibrium Study Of Methane Hydrate, Rahul Shukla Aug 2002

Phase Equilibrium Study Of Methane Hydrate, Rahul Shukla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gas hydrates are solid metastable ice like compounds formed when gas comes in contact with water and have the ability to form at low temperatures. In this study, methane gas hydrates were formed in a Berea sandstone core, which was saturated with brine and then pressurized with methane gas. The formation temperatures were 34°F, 36°F and 40°F and the initial pressures were in the range of 1000--1200 psi. Variation of the methane pressure was monitored with time during the formation run. Dissociation experiments were then carried out and the pressure profile along the core with time was recorded. The volume …

The present investigation was designed to examine the development of disturbed eating patterns among college women. More specifically, this researcher investigated the social contagion of eating attitudes and behaviors among first year college women living in residence hall communities. The results demonstrated that college women developed eating attitudes and behaviors similar to those of other women in their small friendship clusters. Similarities in eating attitudes and behaviors were not found among participants in the study when residence hall floor membership was used as the independent variable. This study also found significant relationships between student adjustment to college and disturbed eating …

The Rhetoric Of Constitutional Law, Erwin Chemerinsky Aug 2002

The Rhetoric Of Constitutional Law, Erwin Chemerinsky

Michigan Law Review

I spend much of my time dealing with Supreme Court opinions. Usually, I download and read them the day that they are announced by the Court. I edit them for my casebook and teach them to my students. I write about them, lecture about them, and litigate about them. My focus, like I am sure most everyone's, is functional: I try to discern the holding, appraise the reasoning, ascertain the implications, and evaluate the decision's desirability. Increasingly, though, I have begun to think that this functional approach is overlooking a crucial aspect of Supreme Court decisions: their rhetoric. I use …

Temporal Trends In Party Affect, Justin Paul Wedeking Aug 2002

Temporal Trends In Party Affect, Justin Paul Wedeking

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been an enormous amount of research on declining partisanship (or dealignment) in the American electorate. The leading view of declining partisanship, promoted by Wattenberg among others, is that the public has become more neutral toward the political parties. According to Wattenberg, this neutrality is a consequence of declining regionalism in party identification and the rise of candidate-centered elections.

An alternative perspective is that negativity underlies the temporal decline in partisanship. In this paper, I will draw upon various strands of the literature to develop a negativity theory of declining partisanship. Using National Election Studies data, I conduct a …

Effect Of Guanosine Tetraphosphate On Growth Rate And Stable Rna Synthesis In Escherichia Coli, Heather Anne Quintanilla Aug 2002

Effect Of Guanosine Tetraphosphate On Growth Rate And Stable Rna Synthesis In Escherichia Coli, Heather Anne Quintanilla

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) is a good candidate for a stable RNA synthesis regulator at different growth rates because: high ppGpp levels present during the stringent response are known to inhibit stable RNA synthesis, and there is an inverse correlation between ppGpp concentration and stable RNA synthesis at different growth rates. A system was constructed allowing the user to control intracellular ppGpp levels within the range characteristic of exponentially growing strains, while not allowing cells to adjust ppGpp in response to environmental changes. E. coli strains were transformed with a plasmid containing a truncated relA allele to provide ppGpp. Results show …

The Taiwan Issue In Sino-Japanese Relations In The 1990'S, Melanie Kintz Aug 2002

The Taiwan Issue In Sino-Japanese Relations In The 1990'S, Melanie Kintz

Masters Theses

The Taiwan issue did not figure prominently in the relationship between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Japan between the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations in the 1970s and the early 1990s; other issues dominated and shaped the relationship. However, in the 1990s the Taiwan question re-emerged as a source of disturbance in the relationship between the PRC and Japan. Especially during the so-called missile crisis of 1995-1996, the Taiwan issue was pushed into the world media's center of attention and significantly affected the dynamics of the Sino-Japanese relationship. What accounts for this observable change in the importance of …

Metal Ion Separation Mediated By Organized Molecular Assemblies, Hong Cao Aug 2002

Metal Ion Separation Mediated By Organized Molecular Assemblies, Hong Cao

Masters Theses

We have investigated the separation of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) by the ligands 8-hydroxyquinoline- 5-sulfonic acid and 7-iodo-8-hydroxy-quinoline- 5-sulfonic acid in the presence of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) . Baseline separations have been achieved by HPLC employing an octadecylsilanized silica (ODS) column. The underlying mechanisms of separation have been determined.

The significant new results of our studies are: (1) separation is not possible without the presence of surfactants and hence organized assemblies; (2) separations can be achieved under submicellar concentrations; (3) the separations are not driven by micelles; and …

A Report On An Arts Administration Internship With The New Orleans Film Festival, New Orleans, Louisiana, Summer 2001, Linda Irene Flynn

Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)

This paper comes from 180 hours of internship with the New Orleans Film Festival in Orleans Parish, New Orleans, Louisiana. During those hours of involvement with this organization, I focused on the competitive division of the festival that was then known as Cinema 16. In the course of events, questions arose concerning the issue of board involvement in the Cinema 16 jury process and the board's administrative responsibilities. As it is with all human enterprise, there also is a continuously evolving attempt to improve methods. In the NOFF's case there is an attempt to improve the judging of the entries. …

Dance Beyond Performance Space : Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival And The National Museum Of Dance, Wendy Meegan Aug 2002

Dance Beyond Performance Space : Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival And The National Museum Of Dance, Wendy Meegan

Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)

The administrative skills acquired through this internship include time management, organizational, preservation, presentation, and documentation skills. This internship is a wonderful opportunity to experience the methods different dance organizations use to preserve their past, and promote their organizations through a historical perspective. Preserving the history of an organization is an important task that many of arts administration courses fail to acknowledge. However, since many other aspects of arts administration can be more easily accomplished if this task is performed efficiently, it is a valuable subject to understand.

On Using The Equivalent Conductivity To Characterize Solute Spreading In Environments With Low-Permeability Lenses, Andrew J. Guswa, David L. Freyberg Aug 2002

On Using The Equivalent Conductivity To Characterize Solute Spreading In Environments With Low-Permeability Lenses, Andrew J. Guswa, David L. Freyberg

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Solute transport through highly heterogeneous geologic environments with connected pathways through high-conductivity material and lenses of low permeability often is not described well by a macroscopic advection-dispersion equation. An upscaled advection-dispersion model with a uniform velocity and dispersion coefficient does not predict the significant plume asymmetry and extended tailing often observed over finite distances in such environments. We investigate the hydrogeologic conditions under which an upscaled model must incorporate another mechanism to describe the extended tailing arising from slow advection through and diffusion into and out of low-permeability inclusions. We use high-resolution simulations to determine ground truth transport results for …

Hizballah: Terrorism, National Liberation, Or Menace?, Sami G. Hajjar Dr. Aug 2002

Hizballah: Terrorism, National Liberation, Or Menace?, Sami G. Hajjar Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author reviews the history of Hizballah since its inception in 1982, and examines its role in the recent political turmoil of Lebanon and the region. Not only is Hizballah's role central in the dispute over the Sheb'a Farms enclave between Lebanon and Israel, it is part of an entangled set of linkages involving Syria, Iran, the United States, the European Union, and the Palestinians. The challenge that Hizballah poses to U.S. policy in the Middle East involves complicated strategic issues, not merely problems of terrorism that could be dealt with by countermeasures.

Citizens Developing A Voice At The Table: A Story Of Educational Organizing In Contemporary Extension Work, Scott J. Peters Aug 2002

Citizens Developing A Voice At The Table: A Story Of Educational Organizing In Contemporary Extension Work, Scott J. Peters

Journal of Extension

Diffusing and helping people to apply "science-based" information have long been viewed as the core tasks of Extension educators and specialists. But Extension work also includes a tradition of educational organizing that develops leadership, builds civic capacity, and facilitates learning through bringing people and resources together to identify, deliberate about, and act on important public issues and problems. This article draws from a "practice story" in contemporary Extension work in order to shed light on the dimensions and significance of educational organizing in today's world.

Why Does Pakistan Have To Accumulate Foreign Reserves?, Ishrat Husain Dr. Aug 2002

Why Does Pakistan Have To Accumulate Foreign Reserves?, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The critics of the present policy on reserve accumulation fall into three distinct categories. The first group consists of ‘I don’t accept’ type who do not wish to be bothered with any facts and for them this is simply juggling of statistics. They do not have any credibility in these numbers and don’t believe that the country has so much reserves. For them, I can only pray that Allah opens their minds and allows them to see some light. They can, if they choose to do so, verify the credibility of these statistics by looking at our weekly statements over …

A Formal Method To Analyze Framework-Based Software, Trent N. Larson Aug 2002

A Formal Method To Analyze Framework-Based Software, Trent N. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Software systems are frequently designed using abstractions that make software verification tractable. Specifically, by choosing meaningful, formal abstractions for interfaces and then designing according to those interfaces, one can verify entire systems according to behavioral predicates. While impractical for systems in general, framework-based software architectures are a type of system for which formal analysis can be beneficial and practical over the life of the system. We present a method to formally analyze behavioral properties of framework-based software with higher-order logic and then demonstrate its utility for a significant, modern system.

Transforming America’S Military, Hans Binnendijk Aug 2002

Transforming America’S Military, Hans Binnendijk

Books

Transforming America’s Military, edited by Hans Binnendijk. This book explores the issues that face the U.S. military in a time of transformation: new missions, new technologies, efforts by each of the Services, on the part of our allies, as well as the challenges we face after September 11.

Military transformation requires developing new technologies, operational concepts, and organizational structures to conduct war in dramatically new ways. The United States is undertaking such a transformation to tackle its 21st century missions. A properly transformed military can develop significant advantages over a potential enemy. But the process also introduces risks that, …
