Seepage In Earth Slopes With Longitudinal Drainage Trenches, Ricardo Constantino Kiriakidis L.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The major objective of this study was to determine the effect of hydraulic conductivity on the effectiveness and efficiency of longitudinal drains and on the time to reach steady state seepage under controlled laboratory conditions. An apparatus capable of simulating different slope angles and trench spacing was utilized in this study. By using this apparatus it was possible to obtain data regarding flow pattern, pressure heads, saturation time, influence of slope angle (theta), the trench spacing (W = 2w) and seepage depth (h) under steady state and transient conditions for different values of hydraulic conductivity. Two different soil types with …

Interaction Between Positive And Negative Effectors Of Embryonic And Postnatal Muscle Growth In The Chicken And The Mouse, Scott Allen Gahr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Myostatin, belonging to the TGF-beta family, negatively regulates skeletal muscle growth. The current study was conducted to assess the efficacy of in ovo administration of exogenous myostatin antagonist (MA) to enhance skeletal muscle growth and improve feed efficiency of broilers.;Growth hormone secretion is under the control of a pair of hypothalamic factors, growth hormone releasing hormone and somatostatin. The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) and its endogenous ligand represent a novel third mechanism regulating the release of growth hormone. Early chicken embryonic development, prior to day 14, has been proposed to be independent of GH. However, recent evidence shows that …
Stress Response Genes In The Human Proximal Tubules, Doyeob Kim
Stress Response Genes In The Human Proximal Tubules, Doyeob Kim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The heat shock proteins (hsps) are believed to provide protection against a variety of insults such as elevated temperature, heavy metals and chemical agents. The goal of this study was to determine if the immortalized HK-2 human proximal tubule cell line could provide a model system to study the stress response of the proximal tubule cell. Heat stress, elevated temperature at 42.5°C for 1 hr, caused a marked increase only in hsp 70 mRNA and protein, but not that of hsp 27 or hsp 60 mRNA and protein. Similar results were obtained when the cells were subjected to 100 muM …

The Obesity Pandemic--Implications For Pakistan, D J. Nanan
The Obesity Pandemic--Implications For Pakistan, D J. Nanan
Community Health Sciences
Background: Adverse health outcomes are associated with overweight and obesity. In February 2000, the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, the International Association for the Study of Obesity and the International Obesity Task Force published provisional recommendations for adults for the Asia-Pacific region: overweight at Body Mass Index (BMI) > or = 23 and obesity at BMI > or = 25.Methods: Data from the National Health Survey of Pakistan, 1990-94 were reanalyzed using BMI cut-offs recommended for Asians to reassess prevalence of overweight and obesity in the adult Pakistani population. Results: Prevalence of obesity (BMI > or = 25) in 25-44 year olds …

Il-10 And Alveolar Bone Loss, Abdulaziz Saud Al-Rasheed
Il-10 And Alveolar Bone Loss, Abdulaziz Saud Al-Rasheed
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a cytokine with anti-inflammatory activities. IL-10 knockout (KO) mice exhibit severe intestinal inflammation in the presence of normal gut flora. We hypothesized that IL-10 KO mice would also be susceptible to inflammatory periodontal disease resulting in alveolar bone loss (ABL). The purpose of this study was to compare naturally occurring ABL in IL-10 KO and wild type (WT) mice. Twelve IL-10 KO and 12 WT mice, age-(7 months) and sex-(male) matched, were used. Half of the mice were on 129/SvEv and half on C57BL/6J background. Animal heads were defleshed and treated to remove all organic material. ABL …
Effect Of Employment On Generativity In Married Mothers, Tracy Sierra Dern
Effect Of Employment On Generativity In Married Mothers, Tracy Sierra Dern
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Generativity is Erikson's seventh stage of psycho social development in his life cycle theory, but he postulates different ways of achieving generativity for males and females. Erikson proposed that a woman achieves a sense of generativity from raising a family. However over the last twenty years social roles have changed and there is an increasing number of women developing careers. It is important to determine whether the role of employment has an effect on generativity in women. This study had ten women participants: five married with children, homemakers and five married with children, professionals. Using a semi-structured interview, the·participants shared …

Out Of The Dust: The Ossuary Of James, . . . Brother Of Jesus, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies
Out Of The Dust: The Ossuary Of James, . . . Brother Of Jesus, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
A recently discovered ossuary with the inscription “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus” may be the resting place of the bones of James the Just, the brother of the Lord, from the New Testament. Analyses of the carving, the language, and the history of Israeli ossuaries are being undertaken in an attempt to unveil further information on this ossuary. If this ossuary is authentic and corresponds to the correct time period, it can be more strongly proposed that the bones that used to rest inside the ossuary did, in fact, belong to James, the brother of Jesus of Nazareth.

Challenges In High Na, Polarization, And Photoresists, Bruce W. Smith, Julian S. Cashmore
Challenges In High Na, Polarization, And Photoresists, Bruce W. Smith, Julian S. Cashmore
Presentations and other scholarship
Optical lithography is being pushed into a regime of extreme-numerical aperture (extreme-NA). The implications of the nonscalar effects of high-NA lithography (above 0.50) have been discussed now for many years1. This paper considers the consequences of imaging at numerical apertures above 0.70 with the oblique imaging angles required for low k1 lithography. A new scaling factor, kNA, is introduced to capture the impact of low k1 imaging combined with extreme- NA optics. Extreme-imaging is defined as k1 and kNA values approach 0.25. Polarization effects combined with resist requirements for extreme-NA are addressed, especially as they relate to 157nm lithography. As …
Image Enhancement Through Square Illumination Shaping, Bruce W. Smith, Geert Vandenberghe
Image Enhancement Through Square Illumination Shaping, Bruce W. Smith, Geert Vandenberghe
Presentations and other scholarship
Optical imaging is traditionally carried out using circular pupils, assuring the absence of orientation dependency. In the case of IC microlithography however, such dependency exists and is generally limited to orthogonal axes. We have previously reported the potential improvement to lithographic imaging through the use of a square character to an illumination pupil using fully open pupils, square rings, and slot shapes. In this paper we show lithographic results for this shaping at 193nm using a full field (ASML) imaging tool. Results show improvement in both DOF and exposure latitude over conventional circular shaping, leading to the consideration of this …
Opc And Image Optimization Using Localized Frequency Analysis, Bruce W. Smith, Dale E. Ewbank
Opc And Image Optimization Using Localized Frequency Analysis, Bruce W. Smith, Dale E. Ewbank
Presentations and other scholarship
A method of assist feature OPC layout is introduced using a frequency model-based approach. Through low-pass spatial frequency filtering of a mask function, the local influence of zero diffraction energy can be determined. By determining isofocal intensity threshold requirements of an imaging process, a mask equalizing function can be designed. This provides the basis for frequency model-based assist feature layout. By choosing assist bar parameters that meet the requirements of the equalizing function, through-pitch focus and dose matching is possible for large two dimensional mask fields. The concepts introduced also lead to additional assist feature options and design flexibility .
