Facts About Adolescents From The Demographic And Health Survey—Statistical Tables For Program Planning: Nepal 1996, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. In working with colleagues inside and outside the Council, it became clear that information on adolescents, and the way data are organized, were limiting the ability to understand the diversity of their experiences or to …

Polynomial Continued Fractions, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin Jan 2002

Polynomial Continued Fractions, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Continued fractions whose elements are polynomial sequences have been carefully studied mostly in the cases where the degree of the numerator polynomial is less than or equal to two and the degree of the denominator polynomial is less than or equal to one. Here we study cases of higher degree for both numerator and denominator polynomials, with particular attention given to cases in which the degrees are equal. We extend work of Ramanujan on continued fractions with rational limits and also consider cases where the limits are irrational.

Simple Physics Of Quadratic Spatial Solitons, Gaetano Assanto, George I. Stegeman Jan 2002

Simple Physics Of Quadratic Spatial Solitons, Gaetano Assanto, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Spatial solitons in quadratically nonlinear media result from the interplay of parametric gain, diffraction and cascading phase shift. Their main features are well understood in mathematical terms, and several experiments have been successfully carried out which demonstrate their observability and most important properties. Here we provide an intuitive interpretation of some of the underlying physics, outlining the processes that govern their excitation, propagation and interaction forces.

Electrophoresis Of An End-Labeled Polymer Chain: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Aniket Bhattacharya, Andrey Milchev Jan 2002

Electrophoresis Of An End-Labeled Polymer Chain: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Aniket Bhattacharya, Andrey Milchev

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We study the conformational and the dynamic properties of an end-labeled (telechelic) polymer chain embedded in a porous medium made of randomly distributed immobile spherical obstacles using a stochastic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method for several obstacle densities rho(imp) and for various field intensities F(x) applied only to one end of the chain. For F(x)=0, the chain initially shrinks with increasing density of the obstacles rho(imp). In general, for small F(x) and low rho(imp), the chain elongates along the direction of the force and shrinks in the transverse direction whereby this effect becomes more pronounced at larger chain lengths. However, …

Induced Modulation Instability Of Partially Spatially Incoherent Light With Varying Perturbation Periods, Zhigang Chen, Jill Klinger, Demetrios N. Christodoulides Jan 2002

Induced Modulation Instability Of Partially Spatially Incoherent Light With Varying Perturbation Periods, Zhigang Chen, Jill Klinger, Demetrios N. Christodoulides

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We demonstrate experimentally that a periodic perturbation on a partially spatially incoherent optical beam induces modulation instability that depends strongly on the perturbation periods as well as on the strength of the nonlinearity and the degree of spatial coherence. At a fixed value of the nonlinearity and coherence, the incoherent modulation instability has a maximum growth at a preferred perturbation period (or spatial frequency), leading to the formation of ordered patterns. While the nonlinearity in our photorefractive system is inherently anisotropic, pattern control and pattern switching with anisotropic coherence is readily realized. Our experimental observations are in good agreement with …

Theoretically Exact Filtered Backprojection-Type Inversion Algorithm For Spiral Ct, Alexander Katsevich Jan 2002

Theoretically Exact Filtered Backprojection-Type Inversion Algorithm For Spiral Ct, Alexander Katsevich

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Proposed is a theoretically exact formula for inversion of data obtained by a spiral computed tomography ( CT) scan with a two- dimensional detector array. The detector array is supposed to be of limited extent in the axial direction. The main property of the formula is that it can be implemented in a truly filtered backprojection fashion. First, one performs shift- invariant filtering of a derivative of the cone beam projections, and, second, the result is backprojected in order to form an image. Another property is that the formula solves the so- called long object problem. Limitations of the algorithm …

Existence And Properties Of Quadratic Solitons In Anisotropic Media: Variational Approach, Sergey V. Polyakov, George I. Stegeman Jan 2002

Existence And Properties Of Quadratic Solitons In Anisotropic Media: Variational Approach, Sergey V. Polyakov, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Stationary quadratic solitons associated with second harmonic generation in optically anisotropic media have been investigated both numerically and analytically using the variational approach. The solitons were found to have elliptical shapes, both for the fundamental and second harmonic, and their approximate beam waists and amplitudes as a function of the anisotropy and the soliton parameter were found. The important limits of anisotropic diffraction were compared to the well-known model of isotropic diffraction. The stability of anisotropic solitons was addressed via the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion and the regions of parameter space for which the solitons are stable were identified. Direct numerical simulations …

Spatially Resolved Microrheology Using Localized Coherence Volumes, G. Popescu, A. Dogariu, R. Rajagopalan Jan 2002

Spatially Resolved Microrheology Using Localized Coherence Volumes, G. Popescu, A. Dogariu, R. Rajagopalan

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We propose an optical technique, based on dynamic light scattering, for investigating the local rheological response of a complex fluid over a frequency range larger than that provided by standard mechanical instrumentation. The low-coherence radiation used in a fiber optics configuration allows the measurements to be confined to a small volume around a tenth of a picoliter. The ability of the method to accurately measure both loss and storage moduli has been tested using both simple Newtonian liquids and viscoelastic, complex fluids. The possibility to monitor liquid-gel transitions in polymer solutions has also been demonstrated. The unique capability of the …

Turbulence Induced Beam Spreading Of Higher Order Mode Optical Waves, Cynthia Y. Young, Yadira V. Gilchrest, Brian R. Macon Jan 2002

Turbulence Induced Beam Spreading Of Higher Order Mode Optical Waves, Cynthia Y. Young, Yadira V. Gilchrest, Brian R. Macon

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

It is well known that laser beams spread as they propagate through free space due to natural diffraction, and that there is additional spreading when optical waves propagate through atmospheric turbulence. Previous studies on Gaussian beams have mainly involved the lowest order mode (zero order). The study of higher order mode Gaussian beams has involved Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian beams for rectangular and cylindrical geometry, respectively, These studies have developed expressions for the field and intensity in free space, in addition to developing new definitions of beam size in the receiver plane for the higher order modes. We calculate the mean …

New Phasing Algorithm For Large Segmented Telescope Mirrors, Weiyao Zou Jan 2002

New Phasing Algorithm For Large Segmented Telescope Mirrors, Weiyao Zou

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We propose a new phase calibration method, called the sensor-by-sensor phase calibration method (SSPC), which is applied for the phasing of a large segmented telescope mirror. Instead of making the entire segmented mirror in phase at one time and obtaining the desired sensor readings accordingly, we serially make the local areas in phase at each sensor location and thus obtain the desired sensor readings one by one. Then we run the telescope active control system to make the segments cophase. For the case of Keck telescopes, the SSPC method uses all the 168 phase measurements at 168 phase sensor locations; …

Parameters Affecting Partitioning Of 6 Pcb Congeners In Natural Sediments, Eid A. Alkhatib, Carl Weigand Jan 2002

Parameters Affecting Partitioning Of 6 Pcb Congeners In Natural Sediments, Eid A. Alkhatib, Carl Weigand

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) released by bottom sediments were determined by experiments in which the sediments were artificially resuspended using sediment contaminated with PCBs in a particle entrainment simulator (PES). Sediment cores, spiked with PCBs, were collected from the Housatonic River in Connecticut and run in the PES at simulated shear stresses from 0 to 0.6 N m(-2). Experimental results from these simulations have shown that mean concentration of PCBs in the solid phase for sites with high volatile organic carbon (VOC) were significantly greater than samples with low VOC; the reverse was true for the water phase. In addition, on …

Development Of A Genomic Approach For The Study Of A Coryneform Bacterial Collection., Carole Feurer Jan 2002

Development Of A Genomic Approach For The Study Of A Coryneform Bacterial Collection., Carole Feurer

Theses

In the last few years, genomics has profoundly changed research in the biological sciences and in particular in microbiology. Recent studies have demonstrated that comparative genomics is a powerful approach contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolution of microorganisms. Bacterial collections are important resources of microorganisms, however, the potential that genomics has to offer remains to be realised as it is still virtually absent in any study involving strain collections. This feature thus framed the experimental objectives for this study, whose aim was to define the most comprehensive way to apply genomic based methods (high throughput sequencing and bioinformatics) …

Efficacy Of A Pneumatic Oxygen Conserving Device In The Oxygenation Of Copd Patients During Sleep, Ronda Z. Bradley Jan 2002

Efficacy Of A Pneumatic Oxygen Conserving Device In The Oxygenation Of Copd Patients During Sleep, Ronda Z. Bradley

Theses

For the greater than one million Americans who rely on supplemental oxygen for survival, the vast majority of them struggle with ambulatory oxygen sources which restrict their ability to move freely about within and out of their homes. Liquid oxygen sources can provide the smallest and longest lasting ambulatory oxygen supply. However, the cost of the provision on liquid oxygen has historically been cost prohibitive under our current Medicare reimbursement schedule. The HELiOS™ Oxygen System by Puritan-Bennett a division of Mallinckrodt. has developed an oxygen system, which allows for the smallest, lightest weight and longest lasting oxygen system ever developed. …

Pursuit Evasion: The Herding Noncooperative Dynamic Game-The Stochastic Model, Pushkin Kachroo, Samy A. Shedied, H. Vanlandingham

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This article proposes a solution to the herding problem, a class of pursuit evasion problem in a stochastic framework. The problem involves a "pursuer" agent trying to herd a stochastically moving "evader" agent into a pen. The problem is stated in terms of allowable sequential actions of the two agents. The solution is obtained by applying the principles of stochastic dynamic programming. Three algorithms for solution are presented with their accompanying results.

The Cyborgian Self: Toward A Critical Social Theory Of Cyberspace, Michael Ian Borer Jan 2002

The Cyborgian Self: Toward A Critical Social Theory Of Cyberspace, Michael Ian Borer

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Contemporary social theory currently remains at a virtual standstill, quivering over the decision to radically leave the past behind or to continue within the historical narrative of the Enlightenment. Postmodern social theorists, advocating the position that we have, in fact, entered a new historical epoch, pose serious challenges to our perception of modernity and cultural identity. As an influential strategy that has infiltrated both the humanities and the social sciences for more than thirty years, postmodernism can no longer be dismissed as merely a fad or trend. In a world where the use of complex, and often mobile, …

Comparison Of Mobility Method And Mass Conservation Method In A Study Of Dynamically Loaded Journal Bearings, Biao Yu, Jerzy T. Sawicki Jan 2002

Comparison Of Mobility Method And Mass Conservation Method In A Study Of Dynamically Loaded Journal Bearings, Biao Yu, Jerzy T. Sawicki

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The inverse problem of dynamically loaded journal bearings was solved using generalized Reynolds equation coupled with a complete mass conservative cavitation boundary conditions, as outlined by the Jacobsson-Floberg and Olsson (JFO) cavitation theory. In the course of solution, the modified Thomas algorithms was employed, instead of standard Gauss±Jordan reduction method, which fully utilizes the sparse character of the system matrix, and thus greatly reduces computational time. The developed model was tested against the well-known mobility method for the case of journal bearings in a commercial reciprocating air compressor. It was found that the mobility method overestimates minimum film thickness and …
