Fostering Student Inquiry With Perspective Taking And Music: The Geography Detective Activity, William Gary G. Cole May 2026

Fostering Student Inquiry With Perspective Taking And Music: The Geography Detective Activity, William Gary G. Cole

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

This article introduces the Geography Detective activity, an inquiry-based instructional strategy that integrates perspective taking and music to foster student engagement and disciplinary thinking in a ninth-grade World Geography classroom. Centered on the song “Cecilia” by The Mulligan Brothers, the activity invites students to analyze lyrics as historical evidence, investigate geographical and historical contexts, and construct evidence-based interpretations of time, place, and events embedded within the narrative. Through guided and open-ended inquiry, students adopt the role of “history detectives,” grappling with ambiguity, evaluating sources, and defending plausible conclusions rather than seeking predetermined answers. Grounded in research on inquiry-based learning, perspective …

Characterizing Stiffness Dynamics Of Normal And Malignant Breast Spheroids Using Brillouin Microscopy, Razanne Rafat Zaghloul, Karlin Hilai, Chenjun Shi, Jitao Zhang

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: Breast cancer progression and metastasis are closely linked to alterations in the mechanical properties of tumor cells and their microenvironment. Softer, more deformable cells are often associated with higher metastatic potential. While atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the current gold standard for mechanical characterization, it is limited to surface measurements and can damage 3D cultures. It remains unclear how the mechanical properties evolve over time in normal versus malignant spheroids. This study utilizes Brillouin light-scattering microscopy, a non-contact and label-free optical technique, to assess stiffness changes in normal and malignant breast epithelial spheroids over time. Understanding these mechanical signatures …

Spectral Retriever For Large Language Model (Llm) Multi Agent Systems, Andrea Morandi, Saurabh Gupta May 2026

Spectral Retriever For Large Language Model (Llm) Multi Agent Systems, Andrea Morandi, Saurabh Gupta

Defensive Publications Series

When artificial intelligence (AI) agents search large product catalogs, conventional retrieval systems often return the wrong document because they compress each document into a single summary vector, losing small but critical details that distinguish one product from another. Proposed herein is a spectral retriever technique that addresses this problem by examining documents at multiple levels of detail at the same time, from individual product identifiers to overall document meaning. The spectral retriever technique automatically determines whether a query calls for fine-grained matching, broader semantic understanding, or an intermediate level of granularity, without domain-specific rules or model retraining.

Goodness-Of-Fit Test For The Kumaraswamy Distribution Via Energy Distance Approach With Applications To Real Data, Joseph Njuki, Thomas Gilbert May 2026

Goodness-Of-Fit Test For The Kumaraswamy Distribution Via Energy Distance Approach With Applications To Real Data, Joseph Njuki, Thomas Gilbert

Mathematics and Statistics

In this article, we develop a goodness-of-fit test for the Kumaraswamy distribution based on energy statistics. Due to the availability of its quantile (inverse) function, the Kumaraswamy distribution has been shown to be the preferred alternative to the Beta distribution, since both have bounded support in the (0,1) interval. The proposed test procedure is simple and more powerful against general alternatives. Under different settings, simulations show that the proposed test is capable of being well controlled for any given significance (nominal) levels. In terms of power comparisons, the proposed test outperforms other existing methods in different settings. We then apply …

Optimizing Gated Rnns, Joshua Paul Fechete May 2026

Optimizing Gated Rnns, Joshua Paul Fechete

Honors Projects

Gated recurrent neural networks such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) help fix instability present in normal recurrent neural networks. This allows them to be used for various real-world tasks, and due to their architecture, they are uniquely qualified to handle variable sized input such as text. However, even before training can begin on a machine learning model, various hyperparameters must be chosen to decide how the model will be architectured. Choosing good hyperparameters is vital for creating a model that performs well but is not larger and more computationally expensive to run than it needs …

Sos Effectiveness Evaluation Method Based On Fuzzy Functional Dependency Network Analysis, Hongjia Su, Cheng Zhang, Fei Liu May 2026

Sos Effectiveness Evaluation Method Based On Fuzzy Functional Dependency Network Analysis, Hongjia Su, Cheng Zhang, Fei Liu

Journal of System Simulation

Functional dependency network analysis (FDNA) enables modeling functional dependencies among equipment in a system of systems (SoS) and then computing the whole SoS effectiveness based on the effectiveness of each equipment, thus overcoming the deficiency of traditional SoS effectiveness evaluation based on tree-like index systems. However, critical parameters such as strength/criticality of dependency in this methodology currently rely on subjective empirical assignments, where the deviations resulting from subjectivity may compromise the accuracy of effectiveness evaluation. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a fuzzy FDNA (FFDNA)-based SoS effectiveness evaluation method. This method constructs a functional dependency network (FDN) model …
