A Computational Approach For The Ramsey Numbers R(C_4, K_N), Stanislaw Radziszowski, Kung-Kuen Tse Jan 2002

A Computational Approach For The Ramsey Numbers R(C_4, K_N), Stanislaw Radziszowski, Kung-Kuen Tse

Articles

For graphs G and H, the Ramsey number R(G,H) is the least integer n such that every 2-coloring of the edges of K_n contains a subgraph isomorphic to G in the first color or a subgraph isomorphic to H in the second color. Graph G is a (C_4, K_n)-graph if G doesn't contain a cycle C_4 and G has no independent set of order n. Jayawardene and Rousseau showed that 21 < = R(C_4,K_7) < = 22. In this work we determine R(C_4, K_7) = 22 and R(C_4,K_8) = 26, and enumerate various families of (C_4, K_n)-graphs. In particular, we construct all (C_4, K_n)-graphs for n < 7, and all (C_4,K_7)-graphs on at least 19 vertices. Most of the results are based on computer algorithms.

Applying The Sciences Of The Natural And The Artificial For An Effective Design, Rachael Mckiness Jan 2002

Applying The Sciences Of The Natural And The Artificial For An Effective Design, Rachael Mckiness

Honors Capstones

This study examines the current use of quantitative and qualitative research methods for Information Systems research. These research methods may have a tendency to limit the evolution of the Information Systems field; it is thus important to consider a new framework for gathering Information Systems research. The new paradigm proposed is a combination of the science of the natural and the science of artificial. The science of the natural focuses on the characteristics and properties objects have in the real world and how they behave and interact with each other. The science of the artificial is related closely to the …

The Great Debate : Evolution Vs. Creationism, Alan Wilson Jan 2002

The Great Debate : Evolution Vs. Creationism, Alan Wilson

Honors Capstones

Should we believe that life was created, or that it evolved over millions of years? Evolution is the fundamental principal of all biology, and although it has a wealth of information in its favot there are still many skeptics that fail to recognize its credibility. The purpose of my thesis is to present this evidence in a logical order, so that a creationist that doesn't believe evolution exists, may at least consider it as an explanation of the development of life on earth. I'm not attacking religion, just explaining alternative answers. By examining testimonies and arguments on both sides of …

Team collaboration is an important part of working in business today. With the advancement of technology, individuals can benefit by using electronic collaboration in a variety of environments including offices, schools, and homes. As a research interest, I have recently become fascinated by how technology can benefit users in these settings through electronic collaboration tools. Therefore, I have developed two hypotheses for my area of research interest. First, the frequency of technology usage by students after two weeks using the tool in a team setting will increase. Second, the acceptance of technology by students after two weeks using the tool …

Reduction Of Dendrite Formations To Improve The Appearance Of The Powder Cured Films For Automotive Industry, Alexandru S. Biris, C. U. Yurteri, Malay K. Mazumder, Robert A. Sims, P. H. Williams Jan 2002

Reduction Of Dendrite Formations To Improve The Appearance Of The Powder Cured Films For Automotive Industry, Alexandru S. Biris, C. U. Yurteri, Malay K. Mazumder, Robert A. Sims, P. H. Williams

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The appearance of powder-coated films is dependent upon powder chemistry and spraying parameters. One of the most important physical factors controlling the powder film appearance is the microdeposition of the powder particles on the grounded substrate. During the electrostatic deposition of powder, the formation of dendrites and agglomerates was observed; these formations have an adverse effect on the final film appearance and their elimination may result in smoother and glossier films. Dendrites are generated due to bipolar charging and inter-particulate electrostatic attractive forces. The corona charging technique is mostly used in industrial powder coating applications. At low corona voltages (- …

Profitability Of Variable Rate Phosphorus In A Two Crop Rotation, Jennie Popp, Terry W. Griffin, Michael P. Popp, William H. Baker

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to examine the profitability of variable rate phosphorus application on a rotation of rice (Oryza sativa) and soybeans (Glycine max) on fields comprised of clay and silt loam soils. Phosphorus was chosen because 1) farmers have recently been advised of the benefit of phosphorus applications on rice as well as soybeans, 2)recommended phosphorus application rates vary greatly between clay and silt loam soils and across rice and soybeans, and 3) the residual effects of phosphorus applications in a crop rotation affect the appropriateness of variable rate technology (VRT). A three phase simulation, regression and …

An Analysis Of A Private-Key Cryptosystem, Wei-Wey Tan Jan 2002

An Analysis Of A Private-Key Cryptosystem, Wei-Wey Tan

Student Works (2000-2009)

In this dissertation, we have presented a new block cipher. The proposed block cipher is a Substitution-Permutation network cryptosystem with a block length of 128 bits and key length of 256 bits. With the increased key length and block size, the proposed block cipher has greater security over DES. A modular design approach was applied. The cipher has three major building blocks and their interaction has been carefully chosen to achieve better security and performance. Algorithmic S-Boxes are used to provide confusion and nonlinearity in the cipher. The proposed cipher uses a highly diffusive diffusion layer, which is a combination …

A Genetic Algorithm Solution To The Shortest Path Problem In Ospf And Mpls, Wee Jing Tee Wee Jing Jan 2002

A Genetic Algorithm Solution To The Shortest Path Problem In Ospf And Mpls, Wee Jing Tee Wee Jing

Student Works (2000-2009)

This project studies and explores the potential of using genetic algorithm to solve the shortest path problem in Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). The most critical task for developing a genetic algorithm to the shortest path problem is to how to encode a path in a network. In this project, two genetic algorithm solutions arc developed for the above two problem domains, i.e. Previous-node-based Encoding to solve the shortest path problem in OSPF and Priority-based Encoding to solve the shortest path problem in MPLS. For each of the shortest path problem domains, the proposed solution …

A Case Tool For Code Inspection, Siti Hajar Alias Jan 2002

A Case Tool For Code Inspection, Siti Hajar Alias

Student Works (2000-2009)

Generally, quality and productivity play important roles in every software development life cycle. However, when discussing about quality and productivity, another function that synonym to distinguish these features is software inspection. Software inspection is generally accepted as a useful technique for finding errors in both documents and codes. There are several phases in software inspection and one of it is defect detection phase. This dissertation is to review the role of defect detection phases involved in the software inspection process. Thus, for this project, it focuses on the development of a prototype CASE tool for code inspection called CodeIns. CodeIns …

Design Of Low Phase Drift Cmos Frequency Synthesisers, Cyril Patrick Hervé Florent Lahuec Jan 2002

Design Of Low Phase Drift Cmos Frequency Synthesisers, Cyril Patrick Hervé Florent Lahuec

Theses

This thesis presents a methodology for the development of high performance video clock synthesisers that have high (2000) input to output clock multiplication ratios. The synthesisers are required to be compatible with standard CMOS technologies and they must exhibit very low drift between their input and output clocks.

The methodology used borrows techniques established for RF synthesisers in the GHz range. In the RF domain there are significant constraints on spectral spread and because of this there has been significant interest in phase noise generated by intrinsic device noise. Simple and accurate models were developed that help understand the up …

Servo Response And Modelling Issues In Generalised Predictive Control, Ben Griffin Jan 2002

Servo Response And Modelling Issues In Generalised Predictive Control, Ben Griffin

Theses

One of the more popular control strategies, of late, is the Generalised Predictive Controller (GPC). It has received widespread dissemination in academia and numerous successful applications in industry testify to its usefulness. Its popularity partly stems from its superiority to its predecessors, e.g. the generalised minimum variance and pole-placement controllers, but also from the GPC ‘tuning knobs’, which have simple time-domain interpretations and extremely robust default settings. However, despite the widespread interest, there would appear to be some issues relating to the specification of the closed-loop serv^o response that have not been covered in any great detail in the GPC …
