Development Of A Nanoelectronic 3-D (Nemo 3-D) Simulator For Multimillion Atom Simulations And Its Application To Alloyed Quantum Dots, Gerhard Klimeck, Fabiano Oyafuso, Timothy B. Boykin, R. Chris Bowen, Paul Von Allmen Jan 2002

Development Of A Nanoelectronic 3-D (Nemo 3-D) Simulator For Multimillion Atom Simulations And Its Application To Alloyed Quantum Dots, Gerhard Klimeck, Fabiano Oyafuso, Timothy B. Boykin, R. Chris Bowen, Paul Von Allmen

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Material layers with a thickness of a few nanometers are common-place in today’s semiconductor devices. Before long, device fabrication methods will reach a point at which the other two device dimensions are scaled down to few tens of nanometers. The total atom count in such deca-nano devices is reduced to a few million. Only a small finite number of “free” electrons will operate such nano-scale devices due to quantized electron energies and electron charge. This work demonstrates that the simulation of electronic structure and electron transport on these length scales must not only be fundamentally quantum mechanical, but it must …

Atmospheric Stability And Gravity Wave Dissipation In The Mesopause Region, Chester S. Gardner, Yucheng Zhao, Alan Z. Liu Jan 2002

Atmospheric Stability And Gravity Wave Dissipation In The Mesopause Region, Chester S. Gardner, Yucheng Zhao, Alan Z. Liu

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

High-resolution temperature profile data collected at the Urbana Atmospheric Observatory (40ºN, 88ºW) and Starfire Optical Range, NM (35ºN, 106.5ºW) with a Na lidar are used to assess the stability of the mesopause region between 80 and 105 km. The mean diurnal and annual temperature profiles demonstrate that in the absence of gravity wave and tidal perturbations, the background atmosphere is statically stable throughout the day and year. Thin layers of instability can be generated only when the combined perturbations associated with tides and gravity waves induce large vertical shears in the horizontal wind and temperature profiles. There is a region …

Comparison Of Na Lidar And Meteor Radar Wind Measurements At Starfire Optical Range, Nm, Usa, Alan Z. Liu, Wayne K. Hocking, Steven J. Franke, T. Thayaparan

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Simultaneous wind measurements in the mesopause region at Starfire Optical Range near Albuquerque, NM with Na wind/temperature lidar and meteor radar have been performed and compared. 20 nights of hourly data recorded with these two instruments at two layers around 86 and 93 km altitude are compared for both zonal and meridional wind components. The mean values are found to have no statistically significant differences. The correlation coefficients vary between 0.63 and 0.70, indicating that the two sets of measurements are broadly consistent. When comparing the averaged variations over the night, the two measurements are highly correlated, with correlation coefficients …

Results of a single‐blind round‐robin comparison of satellite primary productivity algorithms are presented. The goal of the round‐robin exercise was to determine the accuracy of the algorithms in predicting depth‐integrated primary production from information amenable to remote sensing. Twelve algorithms, developed by 10 teams, were evaluated by comparing their ability to estimate depth‐integrated daily production (IP, mg C m−2) at 89 stations in geographically diverse provinces. Algorithms were furnished information about the surface chlorophyll concentration, temperature, photosynthetic available radiation, latitude, longitude, and day of the year. Algorithm results were then compared with IP estimates derived from 14C …

A Minimal Regular Ring Extension Of C(X), Melvin Henriksen, Robert M. Raphael, R. G. Woods Jan 2002

A Minimal Regular Ring Extension Of C(X), Melvin Henriksen, Robert M. Raphael, R. G. Woods

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Let G(X) denote the smallest (von Neumann) regular ring of real-valued functions with domain X that contains C(X), the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a Tikhonov topological space (X,Τ). We investigate when G(X) coincides with the ring C(X,Τδ) of continuous real-valued functions on the space (X,Τδ), where Τδ is the smallest Tikhonov topology on X for which tau subset of or equal to tau(delta) and C(X,Τδ) is von Neumann regular. The compact and metric spaces for which G(X) = C(X,Τδ) are characterized. Necessary, and different sufficient, conditions for the equality …

The Large M Limit Of Non-Commutative Open Strings At Strong Coupling, Vatche Sahakian Jan 2002

The Large M Limit Of Non-Commutative Open Strings At Strong Coupling, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Two-dimensional Non-Commutative Open String (NCOS) theory, well-defined perturbatively, may also be studied at strong coupling and for large D-string charge by making use of the Holographic duality. We analyze the zero mode dynamics of a closed string in the appropriate background geometry and map the results onto a sector of strongly coupled NCOS dynamics. We find an elaborate classical picture that shares qualitative similarities with the SL(2,R) WZW model. In the quantum problem, we compute propagators and part of the energy spectrum of the theory; the latter involves interesting variations in the density of states as a function …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Ground And Excited States Of Coumarin 151 And Coumarin 120, Robert J. Cave, Kieron Burke, Edward W. Castner Jr. Jan 2002

Theoretical Investigation Of The Ground And Excited States Of Coumarin 151 And Coumarin 120, Robert J. Cave, Kieron Burke, Edward W. Castner Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present calculations of various properties of the ground and excited states of Coumarins 151 and 120. These and related coumarins are important in investigating ultrafast solvation processes in liquids and complex solutions as well as being important acceptors in model electron-transfer systems. We calculate the following:  (1) the electronic excitation energies to several low-lying singlet states, (2) ground and excited-state dipole moments, (3) solvation effects on excitation energies, and (4) the properties of single Coumarin 151-water complexes. We test our Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations against CASSCF, CASPT2 (both single and multistate versions), CIS, and ZINDO. Using TDDFT, …

Multistate Effects In Calculations Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer Using The Generalized Mulliken−Hush Method, Michael Rust '01, Jason Lappe '00, Robert J. Cave Jan 2002

Multistate Effects In Calculations Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer Using The Generalized Mulliken−Hush Method, Michael Rust '01, Jason Lappe '00, Robert J. Cave

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A simple diagnostic is developed for the purpose of determining when a third state must be considered to calculate the electronic coupling element for a given pair of diabatic states within the context of the generalized Mulliken−Hush approach (Chem. Phys. Lett. 1996, 275, 15−19). The diagnostic is formulated on the basis of Löwdin partitioning theory. In addition, an effective 2-state GMH expression is derived for the coupling as it is modified by the presence of the third state. Results are presented for (i) a model system involving charge transfer from ethylene to methaniminium cation, (ii) a …

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, Ilana Ritov, David Schkade Jan 2002

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, Ilana Ritov, David Schkade

Articles

When people make moral or legal judgments in isolation, they produce a pattern of outcomes that they would themselves reject, if only they could see that pattern as a whole. A major reason is that human thinking is category-bound. When people see a case in isolation, they spontaneously compare it to other cases that are mainly drawn from the same category of harms. When people are required to compare cases that involve different kinds of harms, judgments that appear sensible when the problems are considered separately often appear incoherent and arbitrary in the broader context. Another major source of incoherence …

Vagueness, Ignorance, And Margins For Error, Kenton Machina, Harry Deutsch Jan 2002

Vagueness, Ignorance, And Margins For Error, Kenton Machina, Harry Deutsch

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

We argue that the epistemic theory of vagueness cannot adequately justify its key tenet–that vague predicates have precisely bounded extensions, of which we are necessarily ignorant. Nor can the theory adequately account for our ignorance of the truth values of borderline cases. Furthermore, we argue that Williamson's promising attempt to explicate our understanding of vague language on the model of a certain sort of "inexact knowledge" is at best incomplete, since certain forms of vagueness do not fit Williamson's model, and in fact fit an alternative model. Finally, we point out that a certain kind of irremediable inexactitude postulated by …

Behavioral And Other Human Ecologies: Critique, Response And Progress Through Criticism, Bruce Winterhalder Jan 2002

Behavioral And Other Human Ecologies: Critique, Response And Progress Through Criticism, Bruce Winterhalder

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper has three goals: (1) to define the anthropological subfield of human behavioral ecology (HBE) and characterize recent progress in this research tradition; (2) to address Joseph's (2000) critique of HBE from the perspective of an advocate of that field; and (3) to suggest features that make for effective criticism of research traditions. (1) HBE attempts to understand intra- and inter-societal diversity in human behavior as the product of species-wide adaptive goals which must be realized in highly diverse, socio-environmental circumstances. Theoretically, HBE draws selectively from neo-Darwinism and its cultural-evolutionary analogs, from micro-economics, and from elements of formal decision …

Vaccination Strategies And Backward Bifurcation In Age-Since-Infection Structured Model, Christopher Kribs, Maia Martcheva Jan 2002

Vaccination Strategies And Backward Bifurcation In Age-Since-Infection Structured Model, Christopher Kribs, Maia Martcheva

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

We consider models for a disease with acute and chronic infective stages, and variable infectivity and recovery rates, within the context of a vaccination campaign. Models for SIRS and SIS disease cycles exhibit backward bifurcations under certain conditions, which complicate the criteria for success of the vaccination campaign by making it possible to have stable endemic states when R0 < 1. We also show the extent to which the forms of the infectivity and recovery functions affect the possibility of backward bifurcations. SIR and SI models examined do not exhibit this behavior.
