Adaptive Inference For Distinguishing Credible From Incredible Patterns In Nature, C. S. Holling, Craig R. Allen Jan 2002

Adaptive Inference For Distinguishing Credible From Incredible Patterns In Nature, C. S. Holling, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Strong inference is a powerful and rapid tool that can be used to identify and explain patterns in molecular biology, cell biology, and physiology. It is effective where causes are single and separable and where discrimination between pairwise alternative hypotheses can be determined experimentally by a simple yes or no answer. But causes in ecological systems are multiple and overlapping and are not entirely separable. Frequently, competing hypotheses cannot be distinguished by a single unambiguous test, but only by a suite of tests of different kinds, that produce a body of evidence to support one line of argument and not …

Biodiversity Of Fungi In Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mounds, Jennifer A. Zettler, Thomas M. Mcinnis Jr., Craig R. Allen, Timothy P. Spira Jan 2002

Biodiversity Of Fungi In Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mounds, Jennifer A. Zettler, Thomas M. Mcinnis Jr., Craig R. Allen, Timothy P. Spira

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, became established in North America more than 70 yr ago, and it currently occupies most of the southeastern United States. Fire ants change the physical and chemical components of soil, which likely infuence soil fungi in ant mounds. To determine the effects of fire ants on soil fungi, we sampled soil from fire ant mounds and the surrounding nonmound soil. In addition, we sampled soil from the nests of the native ant Aphaenogaster texana carolinensis Wheeler. We found that both fire ant mounds and native ant nests had greater fungal abundance but …

Coelum Britannicum: Inigo Jones And Symbolic Geometry, Rumiko Handa Jan 2002

Coelum Britannicum: Inigo Jones And Symbolic Geometry, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Inigo Jones's interpretation that Stonehenge was a Roman temple of Coelum, the god of the heavens, was published in 1655, three years after his death, in The most notable Antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stone-Heng, on Salisbury Plain, Restored. King James I demanded an interpretation in 1620. The task most reasonably fell in the realm of Surveyor of the King's Works, which Jones had been for the preceding five years. According to John Webb, Jones's assistant since 1628 and executor of Jones's will, it was Webb who wrote the book based on Jones's "few indigested" notes, on the recommendation …

Upper Cretaceous Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Arctic Archipelago And Northern Continental Margin, Canada, Pedro M. Tapia, David M. Harwood

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Strata in the Canadian Arctic contain diverse and moderately well-preserved Late Cretaceous siliceous microfossil assemblages. One-hundred-twelve samples were analyzed from a composite stratigraphic section (1094m-thick) of the Smoking Hills, Mason River and Kanguk formations. Four sections were examined: (1) Slidre Fjord on Ellesmere Island; (2) Hoodoo Dome on Ellef Ringnes Island; (3) Cape Nares on Eglinton Island; and (4) Horton River on the Anderson Plains, Northwest Territories. Two hundred- three diatom taxa were identified in forty-nine productive samples. Four Upper Cretaceous diatom zones are proposed for the Canadian Arctic based on the biostratigraphic distribution of diatoms: (i) the Upper Cenomanian …

Pyridoimidazolium Cationic Dyes: Theory, Synthesis, And Sub-Cellular Localization, Robert William Rambacher Jan 2002

Pyridoimidazolium Cationic Dyes: Theory, Synthesis, And Sub-Cellular Localization, Robert William Rambacher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

(PICs, Figure 1) are a new class of fluorescent dyes which are prepared by an exceedingly flexible methodology. Using computational chemical methods, the excitation and emission maxima of these dyes were simulated. This was best accomplished through geometry optimization (MM+) followed by calculating the electronic spectrum with ZINDO/S. This protocol has been found to be effective and has the potential to greatly streamline the design of new longer wavelength dyes. Several new longer wavelength dyes have now been identified as synthetic targets.

The presence of amino groups on a known fluorescent ring system is well established to markedly affect the …

Identifying Gifted African-American Students: A Case Study Of A Louisiana School System, Donna Lynn Sutton Jan 2002

Identifying Gifted African-American Students: A Case Study Of A Louisiana School System, Donna Lynn Sutton

Doctoral Dissertations

In 1995, the Office for Civil Rights conducted a compliance review of the Bayou Parish School System (a pseudonym) in Louisiana. The review revealed a statistically significant underrepresentation of African-American students in the Bayou Parish gifted program. This case study examined how African-American representation in a gifted program may be increased through the use of research-based interventions implemented by the Office for Civil Rights.

The researcher used both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and analyze data. Documents from the Office for Civil Rights and the Louisiana Department of Education were examined to: (a) show patterns of African-American and nonminority …

The selected data were derived from a total of 838 sets of scores of children from ten urban school settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences of school-entry age and later academic school performance on the two youngest groups” of male and female children in Indiana who were age eligible to enter kindergarten. In this study test scores from two adjacent age groups of children who were eligible to begin school on June 1 were …

Thermionic Emission Model For Interface Effects On The Open-Circuit Voltage Of Amorphous Silicon Based Solar Cells, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2002

Thermionic Emission Model For Interface Effects On The Open-Circuit Voltage Of Amorphous Silicon Based Solar Cells, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

We present computer modeling for effects of the p/i interface upon the open-circuit voltage VOC in amorphous silicon based pin solar cells. We show that the modeling is consistent with measurements on the intensitydependence for the interface effect, and we present an interpretation for the modeling based on thermionic emission of electrons over the electrostatic barrier at the p/i interface. We present additional modeling of the relation of VOC with the intrinsic layer bandgap EG. The experimental correlation for optimized cells is VOC = (EG/e)-0.79. The correlation is simply explained if VOC in these cells is determined by the intrinsic …

Teaching Biology Using Agriculture As The Context: Perceptions Of High School Students, Mark Balschweid Jan 2002

Teaching Biology Using Agriculture As The Context: Perceptions Of High School Students, Mark Balschweid

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine how high school students perceived science and agriculture after completing a yearlong biology class that used animal agriculture as the context. This study utilized a case-study approach. The population for the study included all students who participated in a biology course utilizing animal agriculture as the context for teaching biology (N=531). More than 90% of the subjects reported they agreed or strongly agreed that participating in a biology class that used agriculture as the context helped them understand the relationship between science and agriculture. Over 85% of those responding agreed or strongly …

The Hand Of The Maker: The Importance Of Understanding Textiles From The "Inside Out", Beverly Gordon Jan 2002

The Hand Of The Maker: The Importance Of Understanding Textiles From The "Inside Out", Beverly Gordon

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This is a position paper of sorts, arguing that the experience of making a textile is an important component of understanding it, and we should be encouraging textile researchers to include hands-on experiments as part of their investigation. Some TSA members will take this idea for granted because they have first-hand experience with textile making, and may find it overly obvious. The point is hardly new, and archeologist Elizabeth Barber made a strong case for the value of textile "reconstruction" in her 1994 book, Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years. Nevertheless, this is not a universally shared assumption, and …

Ata2-Mediated Amino Acid Uptake Following Partial Hepatectomy Is Regulated By Redistribution To The Plasma Membrane, Thomas L. Freeman, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Dean J. Tuma, Tina K. Machu, Mark E. Mailliard

United States Public Health Resources

System A, the Na+-dependent amino acid transport activity, is encoded by the ATA2 gene and up-regulated following partial hepatectomy (PH), and its competitive inhibition interferes with liver regeneration. Rabbit polyclonal antibody was raised against a portion of the ATA2 gene product followed by immunodetection of ATA2 in isolated liver plasma membrane and lysate. The level of ATA2 increased in the plasma membrane following PH, while the relatively high quantity of ATA2 found in liver lysate remained constant. We also have shown that Northern analysis of steady-state ATA2 mRNA revealed no significant change following PH. These data show that …

Effects Of Surface Run-Off On The Transport Of Agricultural Chemicals To Ground Water In A Sandplain Setting, Geoffrey N. Delin, Matthew K. Landon Jan 2002

Effects Of Surface Run-Off On The Transport Of Agricultural Chemicals To Ground Water In A Sandplain Setting, Geoffrey N. Delin, Matthew K. Landon

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

An experiment was conducted at a depressional (lowland) and an upland site in sandy soils to evaluate the effects of surface run-off on the transport of agricultural chemicals to ground water. Approximately 16.5 cm of water was applied to both sites during the experiment, representing a natural precipitation event with a recurrence interval of approximately 100 years. Run-off was quantified at the lowland site and was not detected at the upland site during the experiment. Run-off of water to the lowland site was the most important factor affecting differences in the concentrations and fluxes of the agricultural chemicals between the …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Data recording the course of scrapie outbreaks in 4 sheep flocks (2 in Cheviot sheep and 2 in Suffolks) are compared. For each outbreak the data on scrapie incidence and sheep demography and pedigrees cover periods of years or decades. A key finding is that the incidence of clinical cases peaks in sheep 2-3 years old, despite very different forces-of infection. This is consistent with age-specific susceptibility of sheep to scrapie, as has beenreported for cattle to bovine spongiform encephalopathy and for humans to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Scrapie incidence was higher in ewes than rams and at certain times of years, …
