From Atomistic Lattice-Gas Models For Surface Reactions To Hydrodynamic Reaction-Diffusion Equations, J. W. Evans, Da-Jiang Liu, M. Tammaro Jan 2002

From Atomistic Lattice-Gas Models For Surface Reactions To Hydrodynamic Reaction-Diffusion Equations, J. W. Evans, Da-Jiang Liu, M. Tammaro

Physics Faculty Publications

Atomistic lattice-gas models for surface reactions can accurately describe spatial correlations and ordering in chemisorbed layers due to adspecies interactions or due to limited mobility of some adspecies. The primary challenge in such modeling is to describe spatiotemporal behavior in the physically relevant “hydrodynamic” regime of rapid diffusion of (at least some) reactant adspecies. For such models, we discuss the development of exact reaction-diffusion equations (RDEs) describing mesoscale spatial pattern formation in surface reactions. Formulation and implementation of these RDEs requires detailed analysis of chemical diffusion in mixed reactant adlayers, as well as development of novel hybrid and …

Minimality Of Certain Normal Connected Sums, Tian-Jun Li, Andras I. Stipsicz Jan 2002

Minimality Of Certain Normal Connected Sums, Tian-Jun Li, Andras I. Stipsicz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We show that the normal connected sum of two minimal symplectic 4-manifolds (neither of them rational or ruled) is a minimal symplectic 4-manifold. In the proof we use a symplectic sum formula for Gromov-Witten invariants.

Techniques For Bundling The Solution Space Of Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Amy Beckwith Jan 2002

Techniques For Bundling The Solution Space Of Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Amy Beckwith

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We study the backtrack-search procedure with forward checking (FCBT) for finding all solutions to a finite Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). We describe how to use dynamic interchangeability to enhance the performance of search and represent the solution space in a compact manner. We evaluate this strategy (FC-DNPI) in terms of the numbers of nodes visited, constraints checked, and solution bundles generated by comparing it, theoretically and empirically, to other search strategies. We show that FC-DNPI is equivalent to search with the Cross Product Representation (FC-CPR) of [Hubbe and Freuder 1992] in terms of the numbers of solution bundles and constraint …

Arktos: An Intelligent System For Satellite Sea Ice Image Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh Jan 2002

Arktos: An Intelligent System For Satellite Sea Ice Image Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present an intelligent system for satellite sea ice image analysis named ARKTOS (Advanced Reasoning using Knowledge for Typing Of Sea ice). The underlying methodology of ARKTOS is to perform fully automated analysis of sea ice images by mimicking the reasoning process of sea ice experts and photo-interpreters. Hence, our approach is feature-based, rule-based classification supported by multisource data fusion and knowledge bases. A feature can be an ice floe, for example. ARKTOS computes a host of descriptors for that feature and then applies expert rules to classify the floe into one of several ice classes. ARKTOS also incorporates information …

Scale And Unit Specification Influences In Harvest Scheduling With Maximum Area Restrictions, Alan T. Murray, Andrés Weintraub Jan 2002

Scale And Unit Specification Influences In Harvest Scheduling With Maximum Area Restrictions, Alan T. Murray, Andrés Weintraub

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This article examines alternative approaches for representing a forest region to be scheduled for harvesting, where the primary concerns are maximizing return and imposing a maximum contiguous area of disturbance restriction. One approach assumes that any two adjacent management units exceed a regulated maximum area of disturbance. An alternative approach recognizes that management units may be substantially smaller than the maximum area restriction, so simultaneously disturbing two neighboring units does not necessarily represent a maximum area violation. The distinguishing feature of these two approaches is the way in which a forest is spatially represented. A single time period, 351 management …

The Ophiolitic Molasse Unit Of Ikaria Island (Greece), Adonis D. Photiades Jan 2002

The Ophiolitic Molasse Unit Of Ikaria Island (Greece), Adonis D. Photiades

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Ikaria Island can be divided generally into two composite tectonic units, namely the lower and upper. The lower unit comprises paragneiss basement with local orthogneiss bodies that is overlain by a platform-type marble sequence, passing upward into a sequence of intercalated schist and marble that is intruded by Miocene granites. The upper unit has not experienced Alpine high-pressure metamorphism, and is restricted to the central (Kefala unit) and northeastern (Faros area) parts of the island, which host ophiolitic associations similar to those found in the upper unit of several Cycladic islands. The Faros area consists of an Oligocene-Early Miocene age …

Resistivity Distribution In The Gediz Graben And Its Implications For Crustal Structure, Aysan Gürer, Alaatti̇n Pi̇nçe, Ömer Feyzi̇ Gürer, O. Meti̇n İlkişik Jan 2002

Resistivity Distribution In The Gediz Graben And Its Implications For Crustal Structure, Aysan Gürer, Alaatti̇n Pi̇nçe, Ömer Feyzi̇ Gürer, O. Meti̇n İlkişik

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Preliminary results of resistivity distribution in the crust around the Gediz graben by the magnetotelluric (MT) measurements along two 73- and 16-km-long MT profiles (M1 and profile M2) are presented. Bostick depth transformation of the resistivity component of the MT data denoted a conductive zone at a depth of ~ 10 km. This zone may be related to crustal extension and high regional heat flow (50% higher than the world average). Preliminary interpretation based on one dimensional (1D) inversion result show that the thickness of sediments over the resistive basement changes from 950-3800 m along the profile M1. The relations …

Sonar And High Resolution Seismic Studies In The Eastern Black Sea, Günay Çi̇fçi̇, Derman Dondurur, Mustafa Ergün Jan 2002

Sonar And High Resolution Seismic Studies In The Eastern Black Sea, Günay Çi̇fçi̇, Derman Dondurur, Mustafa Ergün

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Black Sea is one of the largest inland seas in the world. Off the shelf, the water depth quickly plunges to an average depth of 2 km. The Black Sea sediments are rich in calcite and organic carbon, the latter showing a high degree of preservation due to anoxia in the waters below 100-150 m. Slope failures and sediment instability related to immense gas and gas hydrate accumulations are serious problems that can lead to the failure of offshore installations. Marine geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Eastern Black Sea basin using state-of the-art technology to produce …

Tectonostratigraphic Evolution Of The North Anatolian Palaeorift (Napr): Hettangian-Aptian Passive Continental Margin Of The Northern Neo-Tethys, Turkey, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t, Demi̇r Altiner Jan 2002

Tectonostratigraphic Evolution Of The North Anatolian Palaeorift (Napr): Hettangian-Aptian Passive Continental Margin Of The Northern Neo-Tethys, Turkey, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t, Demi̇r Altiner

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Jurassic-Early Cretaceous stratigraphical, sedimentological and structural evolutionary history of the northern branch of Neo-Tethys is recorded and preserved within an average 6-km-thick basin fill. The basin fill is well-exposed as discontinuous inliers of varying size and thickness within, and to the north of, the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture throughout northern Turkey. This basin fill unconformably overlies a substratum comprising the deformed rock assemblages of the Triassic Karakaya palaeorift and its Hercynian basement. Detailed studies based on geological mapping at a 1/25,000 scale and stratigraphic sections measured at 14 type localities show that this infill includes stratigraphical and sedimentological …

Assessing Student Learning Of Content And Computer Skills In Instructional Technology, Mary L. Hallett

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Computer-based technology has been implemented in schools throughout America with the goal of improving student learning and teaching practices, and preparing individuals for a highly technical world. However, due to lack of research and proper assessment, technology's impact on education is virtually unknown. The purpose of the study was to create an assessment tool that would measure student learning of content and technological skills. Three case studies of fourth-grade students were conducted while completing Internet and multimedia activities. Utilizing the qualitative methodologies of interviewing, field notes, journals, student work, and written artifacts, data was collected on how computer technology impacts …

Extraction Of Silymarin Compounds From Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) Seed Using Hot, Liquid Water As The Solvent, J.F. Alvarez Barreto Jan 2002

Extraction Of Silymarin Compounds From Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) Seed Using Hot, Liquid Water As The Solvent, J.F. Alvarez Barreto

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

High value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) solvents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs often occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water can be viewed as an interesting alternative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. This paper examines the batch extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle seed meal in 50'C, 70'C, 85'C and 100'C water as a function of time. For taxifolin, silychristin, …

Intermittent Turbulence Associated With A Density Current Passage In The Stable Boundary Layer, Jielun Sun, Sean P. Burns, Donald H. Lenschow, Robert Banta, Rob Newsom, Richard Coulter, Stephen Fraiser, Carmen Nappo, Joan Cuxart, William Blumen, Xuhui Lee, Xin-Zhang Hu Jan 2002

Intermittent Turbulence Associated With A Density Current Passage In The Stable Boundary Layer, Jielun Sun, Sean P. Burns, Donald H. Lenschow, Robert Banta, Rob Newsom, Richard Coulter, Stephen Fraiser, Carmen Nappo, Joan Cuxart, William Blumen, Xuhui Lee, Xin-Zhang Hu

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Using the unprecedented observational capabilities deployed during the Cooperative Atmosphere-Surface Exchange Study-99 (CASES-99), we found three distinct turbulence events on the night of 18 October 1999, each of which was associated with different phenomena: a density current, solitary waves, and downward propagating waves from a low-level jet. In this study, we focus on the first event, the density current and its associated intermittent turbulence. As the cold density current propagated through the CASES-99 site, eddy motions in the upper part of the density current led to periodic overturning of the stratified flow, local thermal instability and a downward diffusion of …

Asian Carp: Key To Identification Jan 2002

Asian Carp: Key To Identification

National Invasive Species Council

Asian carp are large 39-40 in. (40-50 lb.) fish introduced into the U.S. by fish farmers in Southern states in the 1960’s and 70’s to control vegetation and algae blooms. Three of these species, the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) have been released or have escaped to the wild and are reproducing in many rivers and streams of the Mississippi River Basin. As they continue to expand their range, and show up in commercial and sport fish catches, a need has arisen to develop a simple …
