Elementary History Education And Children's Perceptions Of Time, Christine M. Mccreedy
Elementary History Education And Children's Perceptions Of Time, Christine M. Mccreedy
Honors Theses
When I was in upper elementary school, social studies, history in particular, was often nothing more than reading a text to imprint for a short period of time the "facts" of history. I read books through most of the instruction. I read so many wonderful works of historical fiction, the Holocaust and the Civil War being among the most interesting subjects. Through excellent and not-so-good works of historical fiction, I saw history unfolding in the present, not just the past. The characters gave faces, stories, and meaning to the text we used in class. I grew up with a strong …

Geoarcheological Investigations Of Wetland Cell D Within The Dallas Floodway Extension Project Area, Dallas, Texas, David Shanabrook, Duane E. Peter, Steven M. Hunt
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Dallas Floodway Extension project is designed to provide flood damage reduction and environmental restoration within the Trinity River flood plain between the Corinth Street Viaduct and Loop 12. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, contracted with Geo-Marine, Inc., to conduct an archeological assessment of the proposed Wetland Cell D. The archeological assessment was to identify any potential archeological sites that may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and to provide an assessment of the potential for buried landforms in the project area that may have intact archeological resources present. The geoarcheological …

A History Of Jonathan Alder: His Captivity And Life With The Indians, Henry Clay Alder, Larry Nelson
A History Of Jonathan Alder: His Captivity And Life With The Indians, Henry Clay Alder, Larry Nelson
University of Akron Press Publications
A History of Jonathan Alder: His Captivity and Life with the Indians is one of the most extensive first person accounts to survive from Ohio's pioneer and early settlement eras. Alder's reminiscence spans half a century, from his capture at the age of nine in 1782, when Ohio had no permanent European settlement and was still the exclusive domain of the Ohio Indian nations, to 1832, nearly a generation after the pioneer era had ended. The narrative provides a unique perspective on frontier Ohio and its transformation from wilderness to statehood. It illustrates the continuing evolution in the relationship between …
No Gnus Is Good Gnus, Jim Puder
No Gnus Is Good Gnus, Jim Puder
Word Ways
A gnu is a large, stocky antelope whose seeming ambition is to be a cow. Distinctive for its bizarre rocking-horse running motion, this oddly-formed even-toed ungulate has been described as being made up of parts left over from other animals, an assessment that is probably unfair to other animals. But although their doll appearance may endear gnus (or"gnu"; either pluralization is correct) to the public at large, few palindromists are ever charmed to find a gnu noshing nonchalantly in their word gardens; indeed, their more usual reaction to such a discovery is to, well, have a gnu.
A Modified Ten-Square, Jeff Grant
A Modified Ten-Square, Jeff Grant
Word Ways
More than ten years have passed since "In Search of the Ten-Square" appeared in the November 1990 Word Ways. The ASTRALISED square presented in the article was the culmination of almost twenty years of work on large squares. The main weakness of the ASTRALISED square is the term ROLY NADERS, because there is no published record of Roly Nader anywhere, and besides, there seems to be just one Roland Nader, who is only occasionally called Roly.
A New Approach To The Ten-Square, A. Ross Eckler
A New Approach To The Ten-Square, A. Ross Eckler
Word Ways
Ever since Chris Long's mathematical model in the February 1993 Word Ways showing that it takes a list of at least 250,000 ten-letter words to have a reasonable chance of forming a ten-square, logologists have despaired of forming one from dictionary-sanctioned words. Only by extending the definition of an acceptable "word" does a ten-square seem possible. One way to accomplish this is to allow words from any language (a polyglot square); another is to allow proper or personal names. This article suggests how the latter approach might be realized by reducing the construction of a ten-square to relatively simple independent …
