Selection Of Clinical Trials: Knowledge Representation And Acquisition, Savvas Nikiforou May 2002

Selection Of Clinical Trials: Knowledge Representation And Acquisition, Savvas Nikiforou

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When medical researchers test a new treatment procedure, they recruit patients with appropriate health problems and medical histories. An experiment with a new procedure is called a clinical trial. The selection of patients for clinical trials has traditionally been a labor-intensive task, which involves matching of medical records with a list of eligibility criteria.

A recent project at the University of South Florida has been aimed at the automation of this task. The project has involved the development of an expert system that selects matching clinical trials for each patient. If a patient's data are not sufficient for choosing …

Context Effects And Lexical Ambiguity Processing: An Activation-Based Account, Frazier Orgain May 2002

Context Effects And Lexical Ambiguity Processing: An Activation-Based Account, Frazier Orgain

Master's Theses

Many studies have been conducted to test the effects of ambiguous words in sentence processing. There are two views: the modularity hypothesis and the interactive hypothesis that dominate this field of study. The effect of ambiguity has been tested in many ways, including gating, cross-modal priming, naming, and self-paced reading. This utilizes the methods of self paced reading with lexical decision and naming tasks to examine the hypotheses as they relate to the access period of lexical differentiation. Results indicate that context has an immediate effect, after which participants look to other factors to discern meaning of a sentence. Details …

Dancing For Land: Law-Making And Cultural Performance In Northeastern Brazil, Jan Hoffman French May 2002

Dancing For Land: Law-Making And Cultural Performance In Northeastern Brazil, Jan Hoffman French

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In Mocambo, cultural practices and performances are being reconfigured and retained in new forms and surrounded by new discourses, revealing modes of local self-fashioning and political action. However, our inquiry should not end there. Thomas Abercrombie (1991:99) argues that whatever meanings might adhere to a certain "traditional" cultural form "are today produced and interpreted, within the (semi-open) semiotic systems produced at locally or situationally specific intercultural loci..., which intersect with national and international systems as significantly as with neighboring town groups." In this essay, I suggest that the demands, interests, and desires of the larger society, as manifested in laws, …

In particular, this study employed the Service-Learning Assessment Toolkit (SLAT). a compilation of instruments, measures, and guidelines developed by the researcher. The SLAT captured students' educational development through a variety of data sources and measured development across six target constructs: career exploration, civic participation, and academic, ethical, personal and social growth.

The researcher used a naturalistic inquiry and data was collected and analyzed based on a two-group scenario, instructor and student. The research data identified whether the …

Culture Counts: Examinations Of Recent Applications Of The Penn Resiliency Program Or, Toward A Rubric For Examining Cultural Appropriateness Of Prevention Programming, Shane J. Lopez, Lisa M. Edwards, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti, Alicia Ito, Heather N. Rasmussen

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

It is imperative that researchers pay close attention to the influences of culture on mental health, and acknowledge a cultural context of illness and change when designing prevention programming. Researchers E. V. Cardemil, K. J. Reivich, and M. E. P. Seligman (2002) and D. L. Yu and M. E. P. Seligman (2002) have made attempts at adapting the existing Penn Resiliency Program (PRP) for culturally appropriate use cross-culturally and interculturally. The success of these modifications is discussed within a framework of guidelines designed to remind scientists how much culture counts. Finally, informative resources and a rubric are shared with …

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan May 2002

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan

Michigan Law Review

In the beginning, there was law. Then came law-and. Law and society, law and economics, law and history, law and literature, law and philosophy, law and finance, statistics, game theory, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, critical theory, cultural studies, political theory, political science, organizational behavior, to name a few. The variety of extralegal disciplines represented in the books reviewed in this issue attests to this explosion of perspectives on the law in legal scholarship. This development makes clear that the vocation of the legal scholar has shifted from that of priest to theologian. No longer is a law professor successful by virtue …

Premature Predictions Of Multiculturalism?, Kirsten Matoy Carlson May 2002

Premature Predictions Of Multiculturalism?, Kirsten Matoy Carlson

Michigan Law Review

The late twentieth century ushered in a renewed interest in constitutional democracy as Latin American states revised earlier constitutions and post-Communist countries in Eastern Europe wrote new constitutions to reflect their democratic aspirations. Processes of constitution-making continued throughout the 1990s with new constitutions emerging in states throughout Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The rejuvenation of constitution-making also renewed scholarly interest in comparative constitutionalism. Scholars investigating constitution-making processes in Eastern Europe and Africa soon developed theories on how these processes and the contents of national constitutions changed in the late twentieth century. Donna Lee Van Cott contributes to the new literature …

The Right To Freedom Of Religion Vis A Vis Religious Intolerance In The New Millennium, Buihe P. Okenu May 2002

The Right To Freedom Of Religion Vis A Vis Religious Intolerance In The New Millennium, Buihe P. Okenu

LLM Theses and Essays

The right to freedom of religion has come to limelight with the increase in religious violence and intolerance. With the multiplicity of religions, there tends to be an increase in conflicts. Protection of religion as well as protection from religion has become a dire necessity, if there is to be peace in our world today. Individual religious rights as well as group rights and religious minority rights need to be addressed. There is need for a convention on religion, which will have binding and legal effect on all nations. The issue of the enforcement of the right to freedom of …

Health Sector Reform In South Asia: New Challenges And Constraints, Anwar Islam, M Zaffar Tahir May 2002

Health Sector Reform In South Asia: New Challenges And Constraints, Anwar Islam, M Zaffar Tahir

Community Health Sciences

In early 1990s, Jamison, Mosley and others concluded that a profound demographic and consequent epidemiological transition is taking place in developing countries. According to this classical model, by the year 2015, infectious diseases will account for only about 20% of deaths in developing countries as chronic diseases become more pronounced. These impending demographic and epidemiological transitions were to dominate the health sector reform agenda in developing countries. Following an analysis of fertility, mortality and other demographic and epidemiological data from South Asian and other developing countries, the paper argues that the classical model is in need of re-evaluation. A number …

Feminisms And Cross-Ideological Feminist Social Research: Standpoint, Situatedness And Positionality – Developing Cross-Ideological Feminist Research, Myfanwy Franks May 2002

Feminisms And Cross-Ideological Feminist Social Research: Standpoint, Situatedness And Positionality – Developing Cross-Ideological Feminist Research, Myfanwy Franks

Journal of International Women's Studies

When we consider the different cultural spaces in which feminist social researchers might be carrying out empirical research the nature of ‘feminist social research’ becomes difficult to define. The issue becomes even more complex when we consider the multiple standpoints, contexts and positionalities of different kinds of feminists from diverse backgrounds, both secular and religious. There cannot be a blanket universal agreement between feminists from different ideological positions regarding appropriate subjects and methodologies for research. Nevertheless, the writer concludes that through a pragmatic feminist approach, exemplified by working in a situated way with the materials that are available, we can …

Basque Assimilation Across Four Generations: Experiences In A Rural Community, Megan L. Olson Demontigny May 2002

Basque Assimilation Across Four Generations: Experiences In A Rural Community, Megan L. Olson Demontigny

Theses and Dissertations

The first "Basko" came to the American West in the early 20th century with hopes of securing a future through sheep ranching. Most planned to return home with the money they had made to start their families. However, some stayed after finding a good way to make a living and starting a family.

This research investigates what assimilation was like for those who chose to stay. How far have they come and how did they assimilate? The research spans four generations and includes fourteen interviews with Basques living in Johnson County, Wyoming. In studying the assimilation process of these families …
