A Comparison Of The Effects Of Integrating Special Education Preschoolers With Their Nondisabled Peers, Christina Donio Sansone

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined developmental outcomes associated with services in inclusive and self-contained preschool classrooms. The growth of nine inclusive special education students and twelve self-contained students were investigated. These students were matched for chronological age and classification. Progress was measured with the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development-Revised using a posttest only design in gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech/language skills and general knowledge. Results show that there is a significant difference between these two groups on gross motor standing skills in the inclusive setting. There are no significant differences in other skill achievement.

Ecuador's Indigenous University Movement, Uinpi: Reconstructing Identity In The Search For Equality, Joshua Gerber May 2002

Ecuador's Indigenous University Movement, Uinpi: Reconstructing Identity In The Search For Equality, Joshua Gerber

Honors Theses

The following chapters address Ecuadorian history, identity politics. and the education system to analyze UINPI's role in the reformation of indigenous identity. To provide a backdrop for UINPI's identity project, chapter one establishes a historical framework of the development of racialized constructions of indigenous identity in Ecuador. It utilizes Plumwood's hierarchical dualism to address the ways in which identity ideology justified and motivated the often-brutal socio-political domination of euro-mestizo peoples in Ecuador. Chapter two addresses the role of identity at UlNPI, arguing that the university's identity project is oriented towards the reformation of indigenous identity, rather than the representation of …

A Portrayal Of Gender And A Description Of Gender Roles In Selected American Modern And Postmodern Plays., Bonny Ball Copenhaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe how gender was portrayed and to determine how gender roles were depicted and defined in a selection of Modern and Postmodern American plays. This study was based on the symbolic interaction theory of gender that suggests that social roles are learned over time and are subject to constant reinforcement. The significance of this study was derived from the broad topic of gender because gender issues are relevant to a variety of fields and exploring the effects of gender in one field contributes to the understanding of gender in another field.

The plays …

Synesthetic Sensor Fusion Via A Cross-Wired Artificial Neural Network., Stephen Samuel Seneker May 2002

Synesthetic Sensor Fusion Via A Cross-Wired Artificial Neural Network., Stephen Samuel Seneker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this interdisciplinary study was to examine the behavior of two artificial neural networks cross-wired based on the synesthesia cross-wiring hypothesis. Motivation for the study was derived from the study of psychology, robotics, and artificial neural networks, with perceivable application in the domain of mobile autonomous robotics where sensor fusion is a current research topic. This model of synesthetic sensor fusion does not exhibit synesthetic responses. However, it was observed that cross-wiring two independent networks does not change the functionality of the individual networks, but allows the inputs to one network to partially determine the outputs of the …

Early Academic Performance In Children With Cleft Lip And/Or Palate., Krista Leanna Lowe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies of preschool children have shown early speech and language deficits in children with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). For some children, the deficits during kindergarten diminish as they begin school while some children continue to show delays. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between speech and language skills and early reading skills of phonological awareness, letter identification, and rapid naming in children with and without CLP. The subjects, four kindergarten children with and four without CLP, were administered a battery of speech, language, early reading skills, and nonverbal cognition measures. Two-way analysis of …

Determining Older Adults' Foreign Language Learning Style Preferences Using The Multiple Intelligence Theory, Thurmiere O. Love May 2002

Determining Older Adults' Foreign Language Learning Style Preferences Using The Multiple Intelligence Theory, Thurmiere O. Love

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

here is this widespread belief that older adults cannot successfully learn foreign languages as well as younger adults or children. Consequently, older adults usually buy into this belief and create doubts about their foreign language learning ability. However, contrary to popular stereotypes, many studies have shown that older adults can be good foreign language learners. Yes, older adults face many difficulties in the classroom but so do younger adults and children. The manner in which lessons are taught is extremely significant in the foreign language learning process. When children are taught foreign languages, they are often required to communicate verbally, …

Nine Square With Palindromic Diagonal, Rex Gooch May 2002

Nine Square With Palindromic Diagonal, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

A few years ago, I produced a few thousand nine squares, but they have lain fallow since, as Chris Cole presented "Modern Nine-Squares" in November 2001 and Richard Sabey presented "A Collection of Nine-Squares" in February 1997. I did, however, look for a square with a word on the diagonal as well. Failing to find one among my few thousand or in Word Ways, I now take pleasure in presenting it, plus a small variation.

Word Wide Web, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

Word Ways is a treasure trove of logologically-talented words, words such as HORSESHOER in which the letters of the first half of the word are repeated in the second half in a different order; the 5-letter IOUEA (WW May 1993), the only word made exclusively of one each of the five main vowels; and HAMAMELIDACEAE, seemingly the longest word made from first half of the alphabet letters.

Palindromic Relationship, Susan Thorpe May 2002

Palindromic Relationship, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

The year is 2002 and palindromic NAN is entertaining the idea of taking in a lodger again, despite the fact that her first lodger had been a disaster. His name was Rae and he'd been recommended by a friend. All credit to the friend, she did warn Nan that Rae was prone to hypochondria and somewhat of a doctor's nightmare. But, being Nan, she took pity on Rae. This very quickly proved to be a mistake and Rae didn't stay long! However, his short stay did enable us to demonstrate two types of palindromic poetry.

In the February 2002 Word Ways I explored trandeletions and transadditions of the names of the state capitals. How close could I get to finding 50 one-letter transdeletions? Where one-letter transdeletions could not be located, what were the fewest number of letters that needed to be deleted to effect a transdeletion? How close could I get to finding 50 one-letter transadditions? Where one-letter transadditions could not be located, what were the fewest number of letters that needed to be added to effect a transaddition? My previous article offered transdeletions for all 50 state capital names, involving deletion of a total …

In the list of fifty words that follows, all of the vowels (A, E, I, O, and U) have been supplied. The blanks represent consonants (including Y) which appear in alphabetical order. For instance, he word - E -- O -- could stand for DEFROST, BEDPOST, or LEPROSY. Plurals are not permitted, so that - A -- E -- could not stand for BADGERS. Furthermore, no consonant can be repeated, so that I - E -- I -- could not stand for IDENTITY. Each of the first forty-four words have five missing consonants, while each of the remaining half-dozen has …
