The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok Oct 2002

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). A simple design based on minimal blue and black rectangular panels, for attraction and contrast, with a trap body consisting of an innovative configuration …

Perceptions Of Preservice Elementary Teachers On Multicultural Issues, Mary Alice Barksdale, Janet Richards, Peter Fisher, Marge Wuthrick, Jean Hammons, Dana Grisham, Heather Richmond Oct 2002

Perceptions Of Preservice Elementary Teachers On Multicultural Issues, Mary Alice Barksdale, Janet Richards, Peter Fisher, Marge Wuthrick, Jean Hammons, Dana Grisham, Heather Richmond

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This paper reports an exploratory study of preservice teachers' knowledge of multicultural education and preparedness for literacy instruction with diverse populations. We conducted the study across a variety of college and university contexts. Results showed that preservice teachers did not feel well prepared to teach children of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. We also found evidence that these preservice teachers had not developed a strong knowledge base about multicultural education, despite the fact that they had all been introduced to multicultural topics in their teacher education coursework. This study demonstrates that there is a need for examination of current methods …

Zola(R) Energy: On The Film Adaptations Of Emile Zola's La Bete Humaine, Walter C. Metz Oct 2002

Zola(R) Energy: On The Film Adaptations Of Emile Zola's La Bete Humaine, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay reads the Fritz Lang film noir, Human Desire (1954) as an intertextual reworking of La Bete humaine (Jean Renoir, 1938), in turn an adaptation of Emile Zola's eponymous novel (1890). I argue that whereas Renoir's film worries about the impending World War II, Lang's grapples with the noir legacy of a post-war world devoid of hope. This traps Zola's novel in a middle ground: the novel is set on the brink of the French destruction in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, but is written twenty years afterward.

Culture For Sale: Marketing Gullah Identity In The South Carolina Sea Islands, Melissa Hargrove Oct 2002

Culture For Sale: Marketing Gullah Identity In The South Carolina Sea Islands, Melissa Hargrove

Southern Anthropologist

(Winning Entry 2002 SAS Student Paper Competition: Graduate) Gullah women of the South Carolina Sea Islands have held firmly to the traditional craft of sweetgrass basketry brought by their enslaved African ancestors. Presently their identity is being appropriated by the tourism industry. This commoditization is manifest in tourism literature, brochures, and postcards in ways that invite tourists to witness this "exoticized" cultural heritage. The chosen images serve to enforce a representation of Gullah that is tied to the colonial plantation era. This paper elucidates how the use of Gullah imagery within such exploitative contexts undermines Gullah women's power to define …

Reid’S Foundation For The Primary/Secondary Quality Distinction, Jennifer Mckitrick Oct 2002

Reid’S Foundation For The Primary/Secondary Quality Distinction, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Thomas Reid (1710-1796) offers an under-appreciated account of the primary/secondary quality distinction. He gives sound reasons for rejecting the views of Locke, Boyle, Galileo and others, and presents a better alternative, according to which the distinction is epistemic rather than metaphysical. Primary qualities, for Reid, are qualities whose intrinsic natures can be known through sensation. Secondary qualities, on the other hand, are unknown causes of sensations. Some may object that Reid’s view is internally inconsistent, or unacceptably relativistic. However, a deeper understanding shows that it is consistent, and relative only to normal humans. To acquire this deeper understanding, one must …

The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley Oct 2002

The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In 1946, the Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, started using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in French. To do so, the librarians created an authority list in French, Répertoire de Vedettes-matière (RVM), whose first published edition appeared in 1962 (the first edition appeared with the title Répertoire des Vedettes-matière). Since then, RVM has had increasing importance in providing support for subject access in francophone countries around the world as other libraries, first in Canada and then in Europe, either adopted RVM, often with some modification, for subject access or used it as a resource for creating French …

The Effects Of Communication Modality On Teamwork Processes, Thomas D. Fletcher Oct 2002

The Effects Of Communication Modality On Teamwork Processes, Thomas D. Fletcher

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Since the onset of the digital age, organizations have been able to make use of teams of individuals distributed geographically to remain competitive. While strides have been made to understand the effectiveness of collocated teams, research has yet to sufficiently explore the effects of emerging technologies on team processes and effectiveness. A laboratory study, where dyads were asked to create a spreadsheet by following a set of explicit instructions (i.e., a psychomotor task), was conducted to manipulate the communication modalities most commonly used between collaborators (i.e., face-to-face vs. audio) and compare the effects of adding a shared workspace application. The …

Differences In Perception And Number Of Incidents Of Sexual Harassment Among College Students In The United States And The Federal Republic Of Germany, Antonia Von Tobiesen Oct 2002

Differences In Perception And Number Of Incidents Of Sexual Harassment Among College Students In The United States And The Federal Republic Of Germany, Antonia Von Tobiesen

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the difference between American and German students in perception and frequency of sexual harassment. The participants were female Old Dominion University psychology undergraduates and psychology students from the Universitaet Freiburg. A survey containing the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire {SEQ), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and modified questions from Gutek's (1985) Main Questionnaire (Women's Version) was used. The survey was designed to reveal sexual harassment experiences in the work environment or in the university setting, while measuring the effect of the experiences on self-esteem and the students' reactions to the incidents. The results indicated that …

Defining And Customizing Tagmemic Interaction For Historic House Museum Websites: A Study Of Effective Learning Design For Museum Educators, Julie Jenkins Strohkorb Oct 2002

Defining And Customizing Tagmemic Interaction For Historic House Museum Websites: A Study Of Effective Learning Design For Museum Educators, Julie Jenkins Strohkorb

English Theses & Dissertations

Educational multimedia tools that are marketed most successfully usually are described as "interactive" learning resources. The word interactive broadly suggests a host of positive learning experiences - student-driven inquiry, audio-visual support of ideas, and critical thinking or decision-making opportunities. However, the term interactive often is used loosely, and begs for a more concrete definition. This study defines multimedia interactivity as a give-and-take relationship between a technology tool and its human user. Technology itself is not interactive, but technology can be designed and developed to enhance an interactive experience. This study looks at the problem of defining such a nebulous term, …

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo Oct 2002

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The writers criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ensuing military and political occupation of the country. They suggest a link between aggressive U.S. military posture and neoliberal globalization and contend that the current situation in Iraq is a metaphor for globalized capitalism across the world. The writers then consider issues surrounding the politics of organization in the search for a socialist alternative to free market capitalism and discuss how critical educators can reinvigorate the civil societarian left at a time when elites are less accountable to civil society than ever before.
