The Impact Of A Language Learning Context On Chinese Students Learning English., Saundra Enany Faris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine English language acquisition in four ESL children whose native country is China. Each of the four children was considered individually and holistically through case study methodology, and some comparisons across children were considered. A second purpose of this study was to look holistically at the instructional strategies used to support language acquisition for each of these students. In addition, this research investigated the perceptions of the four Chinese ESL students regarding strategies and instructional methods used to facilitate English language acquisition at one or two elementary schools in a rural state in …

[Introduction To] Race And The Rise Of Standard American, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
[Introduction To] Race And The Rise Of Standard American, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
Bookshelf
This study examines the effect of race-consciousness upon the pronunciation of American English and upon the ideology of standardization in the twentieth century. It shows how the discourses of prescriptivist pronunciation, the xenophobic reaction against immigration to the eastern metropolises - especially New York - and the closing of the western frontier together constructed an image of the American West and Midwest as the locus of proper speech and ethnicity. This study is of interest to scholars and students in linguistics, American studies, cultural studies, Jewish studies, and studies in race, class, and gender.
How Copyright Got A Bad Name For Itself, Jane C. Ginsburg
How Copyright Got A Bad Name For Itself, Jane C. Ginsburg
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay does not attempt a comprehensive review of recent U.S. copyright legislation and caselaw. Instead, it offers an analytical framework that will allow me to be both informative and opinionated. I propose first to expose some examples of the kind of copyright owner overreaching that has correctly given copyright a bad name. I then will argue that not all the bad publicity is deserved. Rather, much of the last years' legislation and caselaw, instead of overreaching, appropriately reaches out to address new problems prompted by new technologies, so as to strike a happier balance between copyright owner, intermediary, and …
The Rise And Fall Of Article 2, Robert E. Scott
The Rise And Fall Of Article 2, Robert E. Scott
Faculty Scholarship
In August 13,2001 the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws voted eighty-nine to fifty-three to reject the Amendments to Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code that had just been approved in May by the American Law Institute. The vote followed a last minute effort by the Article 2 drafting committee to amend the scope provisions of Article 2 in response to continuing criticism from representatives of the software and information industries. Several months later, at the request of the NCCUSL leadership, amended Article 2 with its revised scope provision was withdrawn from the agenda of the ALI …

Her bibliography contained 182 items, all of which are included in this volume as well as 374 items post 1976.
One of the goals of the project was to acquire as many of the items for the Loyola Marymount University …
Parental Perceptions On Maintaining Heritage Languages Of Cld Students, Ruth Lingxin Yan
Parental Perceptions On Maintaining Heritage Languages Of Cld Students, Ruth Lingxin Yan
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The rapid growth of the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in public schools of the United States has been steady in the past decades. Issues concerning CLD students such as their school failures, high dropout rates, the limited English proficiency, family poverty, and their unequal job opportunities, have caused increasing concerns from policy makers, school administrators and educators at all school levels. Various efforts to modify CLD students' social and academic disadvantages have been attempted through educational approaches, especially in the form of heritage language support in bilingual education programs initiated at the local school levels and funded by …

Sources Of Inter-State Alignments: Internal Threats And Economic Dependence In The Former Soviet Union, Eric A. Miller
Sources Of Inter-State Alignments: Internal Threats And Economic Dependence In The Former Soviet Union, Eric A. Miller
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation develops a framework for understanding the alignment patterns of states of the former Soviet Union (FSU) vis-à-vis Russia. The framework challenges traditional alignment theories, such as balance of power and balance of threat theories, and suggests that these theories provide less accurate predictions of alignment behavior in the FSU than the present framework because of a variety of situational and contextual factors. In particular, the present framework highlights the impact of two variables on alignment patterns, (1) the internal political threats to leaders, and (2) the economic dependence on Russia. These two variables produce a four-outcome model, presented …
The Challenge Of Policing Immigrant Communities, Benjamin J. Goold
The Challenge Of Policing Immigrant Communities, Benjamin J. Goold
All Faculty Publications
Providing effective policing for immigrant communities is one of the greatest challenges facing law enforcement agencies in the United States today. Despite the fact that police departments across the country have worked hard to improve their relations with immigrant communities in recent years, research suggests that many immigrants continue to encounter considerable difficulties in their dealings with the police and the criminal justice system in general. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of familiarity with the US legal system, are all factors that can prevent immigrants from gaining access to justice or taking advantage of important criminal justice services. …
What Do We Do When We Do Law And Popular Culture, Jessica Silbey
What Do We Do When We Do Law And Popular Culture, Jessica Silbey
Faculty Scholarship
"What We Do When We Do Law and Popular Culture" establishes a theoretical framework for analyzing legal popular culture, taking as its point of departure Richard Sherwin's book "When Law Goes Pop." The article stresses what Professor Silbey considers to be three major stumbling blocks in the growing interdiscipline of law and popular culture. She argues that if we are to advance our understanding of the relationship between law and popular culture, we must follow at least three simple charges: (1) demarcate our beginning concepts, such as law or culture, so that amidst the vast phenomena that may be called …

Evaluation Of An Inter-Programmatic Training Program Provided To The Staff Of The Office Of Infant And Child Health Services, Gloria V. Chen
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Family Health Branch of the Georgia Division of Public Health has been going through a transition by changing its mode of operation from an administrative to a facilitative and supportive role. There have been several changes in managers of Offices within the Branch, along with reduction in staff at all levels. Some program managers from the Office of Infant and Child Health spend a great portion of their time out of the office doing site visits, attending meetings or presenting workshops. During their absence no one is available to address specific issues related to their programs. An inter-programmatic training …
The Development Of A Workshop To Promote A Team Approach To Fundraising At Tri-County Community College, Terrie Kelly
The Development Of A Workshop To Promote A Team Approach To Fundraising At Tri-County Community College, Terrie Kelly
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Tri-County Community College is operating in an environment of severe economic hardship, just at a time when the college community needs the college the most. The state of North Carolina is grappling with a projected 900 million dollar budget shortfall (McKnight, 2002). This fiscal year, all North Carolina community college budgets have suffered a four percent budget reversion with another reversion of up to eight per cent expected before the year ends (North Carolina Association for Community College Presidents, 2002).
At the same time, Tri-County Community College enrollment has soared due to several manufacturing plant closures. Since the year 2000, …

A Study To Determine The Relationship Between Where African American Students Graduated High School In New Jersey And Their Participation In Co-Curricular Activities In College, Jocelyn D. Briddell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
African American women at Douglass College do not seem to be involved in mainstream campus organizations and activities. It has been suggested the students who come from urban areas in New Jersey are less involved in co-curricular activities because of a lack of state funding. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between where African American Douglass women graduated from high school in New Jersey and their participation in co-curricular activities.
There was one research question for this study: Is there a relationship between student participation in co-curricular activities based upon whether the …

Improving Student Achievement And Attitude In Middle Grade Social Studies Classes Through Learning Style Instruction And Design, Jennifer D. Vincent
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to improve student achievement and attitude in a middle school social studies class. Students were not performing well on tests and exams after experiencing traditional visual and auditory instructional methods. The Jack of diversity and creativity in delivery of instruction resulted in limited academic achievement and poor attitude towards social studies learning. Furthermore, long-term memory was also negatively affected because the traditional teaching approaches did not emphasize higher level thinking that promotes greater retention. The study integrates theoretical research concerning how students learn to the development of a strong historical rationale for implementing learning styles …

Open Access Master's Theses
Despite the significant health and quality of life benefits of exercise, more than 40% of the older adult population in America do not participate in any dedicated physical activity. As the number of older adults grows, it becomes increasingly important to meet the public health challenge to help seniors adopt and maintain exercise behavior in order enhance the overall well being of this population. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively explore the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change with respect to exercise adoption and maintenance among older adults and to identify the processes of change used …

Also included in the study was a description of differences in the extracted factors of acculturative stress by gender, age, marital status, residence type, place of origin, length of study at UN[, length of stay in the US, and number of working hours per week. A random sample of 98 international students (45% female, and 54% male) responded to a 50-item acculturative stress and coping …
Illumination And Food Deprivation As Determinants For Hoarding In Golden Hampsters, Erin Smith '02
Illumination And Food Deprivation As Determinants For Hoarding In Golden Hampsters, Erin Smith '02
Honors Projects
It is important for animals to adapt to changes in food availability in order to survive. Hoarding is one method of accomplishing this and the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is particularly adept at hoarding. Previous literature suggests a connection between hoarding and stress. To further examine this connection, the present study looked at the effects of illumination and food deprivation on the hoarding behavior of male golden hamsters. The within-subjects design allowed each of the 12 subjects to be tested in each of the 4 conditions: 1) illumination and food deprivation, 2) illumination and no food deprivation, 3) food deprivation …

A Categorial Grammar Fragment For Lushootseed, Deryle W. Lonsdale
Faculty Publications
This paper establishes a basic framework for a Categorial Grammar (CG) description ofLushootseed morpho syntax and semantics. After a brief review of English CG principles, a preliminary attempt is made to apply these fundamentals to Lushootseed free and bound morphemes. Several sample derivations are presented. including one rather complex syntactic ambigiuty previously noted in the literature with its alternative descriptions. Once the syntactic elements have been put in place a short overview is presented of how semantic interpretation can be established in tandem with syntactic composition principles. Finally, the implementation of this framework within the Attribute Logic Engine environment is …

It is generally the case that special volumes include studies on a narrowly defined topic of linguistic investigation from a single theoretical standpoint. A glance at the table of contents of the present issuem on the other hand, reveals an eclectic group of papers with topics ranging from second-language acquisition to feature theory. In addition to the variety of topics covered, it should be noted that a wide variety of theoretical frameworks is represented. The present volume contains the work of researchers who assume structuralist, generative, functionalist, and psycholinguistic perspectives. Nevertheless, the thread that ties these studies together is that …

A growing body of Western literature has demonstrated the importance of three domains of socialization—connection with significant others, regulation of behavior, and the facilitation of psychological autonomy—in predicting outcomes in adolescents and children (Barber, 1997a, 1997b; Gray & Steinberg, 1999; Hart, Newell, & Olsen, in press; Nelson, 1997; Steinberg, Dornbusch, & Brown, 1992). Psychological control—parenting that does not allow children psychological autonomy, as has been defined elsewhere in this volume, has received increased attention in the past decade (for a discussion of definitions and research, see chapter 2, this volume).
The Adaptive Advantage Of Symbolic Theft Over Sensorimotor Toil: Grounding Language In Perceptual Categories, A Cangelosi, S Harnad
The Adaptive Advantage Of Symbolic Theft Over Sensorimotor Toil: Grounding Language In Perceptual Categories, A Cangelosi, S Harnad
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Using neural nets to simulate learning and the genetic algorithm to simulate evolution in a toy world of mushrooms and mushroom-foragers, we place two ways of acquiring categories into direct competition with one another: In (1) "sensorimotor toil,” new categories are acquired through real-time, feedbackcorrected, trial and error experience in sorting them. In (2) "symbolic theft,” new categories are acquired by hearsay from propositions – boolean combinations of symbols describing them. In competition, symbolic theft always beats sensorimotor toil. We hypothesize that this is the basis of the adaptive advantage of language. Entry-level categories must still be learned by toil, …
Reasonable Expectations And The Erosion Of Privacy, Shaun B. Spencer
Reasonable Expectations And The Erosion Of Privacy, Shaun B. Spencer
San Diego Law Review
This Article examines how the prevailing legal conception of privacy facilitates the erosion of privacy. The law generally measures privacy by reference to society’s reasonable expectation of privacy. If we think of the universe of legally private matters as a sphere, the sphere will contract or (at least in theory) expand in accordance with changing social expectations. This expectation-driven conception of privacy in effect establishes a privacy marketplace, analogous in both a literal and metaphorical sense to a marketplace of ideas. In this marketplace, societal expectations of privacy fluctuate in response to changing social practices. For this reason, privacy is …
Responsibility In Capital Sentencing, Steven Semeraro
Responsibility In Capital Sentencing, Steven Semeraro
San Diego Law Review
Although modem doctrine is worth preserving, it could be improved significantly by focusing explicitly on heightening individual responsibility. Two concrete ways to improve it would be to (1) explain the sentencer' s role in the narrative voice, a way of speaking that, at least in American society, appears to be associated with the assignment of responsibility; and (2) require heightened scrutiny of death sentences by state appellate courts, bringing the responsibility of state appellate judges in capital cases in line with the responsibility they bear in constitutional cases dealing with analogous mixed questions of fact and law under the First, …
Feminist Legal Writing, Kathryn M. Stanchi
Feminist Legal Writing, Kathryn M. Stanchi
San Diego Law Review
Because feminist legal advocates must use legal writing to persuade
their audience and push for change in the law, they must confront the dilemma of whether to follow legal writing conventions and risk altering or losing their feminist message or whether to break from convention and risk losing the legal audience. Feminist legal scholarship, in many different ways, has made great progress in dealing with this dilemma. The focus of this Article, however, is on several pieces of feminist legal scholarship that have confronted the dilemma by pushing the bounds of conventional legal language and legal writing. These pieces, by …

Evaluation Of Lntelligent Medical Systems, Julian Bernard Tilbury
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis presents novel, robust, analytic and algorithmic methods for calculating Bayesian posterior intervals of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and confusion matrices used for the evaluation of intelligent medical systems tested with small amounts of data. Intelligent medical systems are potentially important in encapsulating rare and valuable medical expertise and making it more widely available. The evaluation of intelligent medical systems must make sure that such systems are safe and cost effective. To ensure systems are safe and perform at expert level they must be tested against human experts. Human experts are rare and busy which often severely restricts …
