D/Deafness And The Basic Course: A Case Study Of Universal Instructional Design And Students Who Are D/Deaf In The (Aural) Communication Classroom, Julia R. Johnson, Susan M. Pliner, Tom Burkhart Jan 2002

D/Deafness And The Basic Course: A Case Study Of Universal Instructional Design And Students Who Are D/Deaf In The (Aural) Communication Classroom, Julia R. Johnson, Susan M. Pliner, Tom Burkhart

Basic Communication Course Annual

The primary purpose of this essay is to suggest ways to create a universally inclusive curriculum, which, by definition, addresses the learning needs of all students, including students with disabilities or, in this case, students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Presented with the opportunity of having a d/Deaf students in a public speaking class, we reflect on the accommodations made, the assumptions inherent in an inclusive classroom, and the ideology of ableism. Because d/Deafness is as much a cultural identity as an auditory condition, we also address how to create safe learning environments for diverse student populations through the use …

The Rwandese, Clea Msindo Koff, Ralph J. Hartley Jan 2002

The Rwandese, Clea Msindo Koff, Ralph J. Hartley

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The Rwandese are a set of peoples who live in the country of Rwanda in eastern central Africa who today number an estimated 7.9 million.2 Rwanda is a small country that has the highest population density (numbers of people per square-mile) in Africa. All Rwandese speak Rwanda (Kinyarwanda), and some speak French, Swahili, or English. Rwandese identify with three population groups called Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. Today, these labels are used as ethnic identifiers; however, in the past they designated an individual's occupation. It is not clear if the words Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa existed in ancient times when people …

No Place To Die: The Poetics Of Roadside Sacred Places In Mexico, Daniel Raymond Weir Jan 2002

No Place To Die: The Poetics Of Roadside Sacred Places In Mexico, Daniel Raymond Weir

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Roadside death memorials are a response to the sudden, tragic death of a loved one; and are appearing with increasing regularity in developed and developing countries across the globe. In Mexico, however, wayside memorials and shrines of religiosity are a centuries-old tradition. This work, an effort to understand why the exact location of a person’s death is so important that a sacred place must be created where no place is intended, is basic and exploratory research. A multi-method, and cross-disciplinary case study, based upon the author’s fieldwork in Mexico, produces massive data and constitutes a robust explanatory triangulation. A geographic …

The Sound Of Meaning: Theories Of Voice In Twentieth-Century Thought And Performance, Andrew Mccomb Kimbrough Jan 2002

The Sound Of Meaning: Theories Of Voice In Twentieth-Century Thought And Performance, Andrew Mccomb Kimbrough

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the problem of the denigration of the voice in poststructural theory and contemporary performance criticism. The problem has antecedents in twentieth-century language philosophy. Saussure defines language as a compendium of arbitrary words recognized according to the degrees of phonetic difference between them. Since for Saussure the arbitrary words of language also designate arbitrary concepts, he concludes that the sounds of words cannot be thought constituent of their sense. After Saussure, structuralism dislodges the voice from its privileged position in the phonologic discourses of Western thought. Poststructuralism views meaning as a product of socially constructed language systems, and …

Subversive Aspects Of American Musical Theatre, Donald Elgan Whittaker Iii Jan 2002

Subversive Aspects Of American Musical Theatre, Donald Elgan Whittaker Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Critical discourse regarding musical theatre takes, for the most part, the form of a profound silence, due presumably to a dismissal of the genre as simplistic and insubstantial. Not only have the elements of musical theatre been present in the majority of theatrical history, but many of the greatest theories regarding theatre have included these elements, including Brecht and Wagner. Musicals have also often concerned themselves with the Other, centering and sympathizing him/her in a manner unavailable to non-musical works. The Others that have thus been positioned are often delineated from hegemonic groups which are concretely those in power, but …

Ontogeny And Intervals Of Development In Five Reef-Associated Species Of Blenny From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico (Teleostei: Blenniidae), James G. Ditty Jan 2002

Ontogeny And Intervals Of Development In Five Reef-Associated Species Of Blenny From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico (Teleostei: Blenniidae), James G. Ditty

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I examined patterns and timing of ontogeny and relative growth in five species of blenny (Teleostei: Blenniidae) from the northern Gulf of Mexico by assigning a suite of discrete character state scores to ontogenetic events (10 external traits; 218 total specimens). This is the first study to evaluate developmental patterns in reef-associated fishes relative to the timing of metamorphosis and settlement by applying scaling techniques and statistical methods to quantify, differentiate, and select criteria for defining intervals of development across taxa. Blennies settle at a common state of ontogeny and share a common pattern of body and fin/cirrus growth. Three …

The "Minor" Author And The Major Editor: A Case Study In Determining The Canon, Christopher Andrew Healy Jan 2002

The "Minor" Author And The Major Editor: A Case Study In Determining The Canon, Christopher Andrew Healy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the relationship between a literary work and its printed edition in the production of reputation--the editor as gatekeeper of the reputation of a “minor” poet. That relationship is demonstrated through a case study on the effects of the nineteenth-century edition of the works of the fifteenth-century poet Thomas Hoccleve and an analysis of the lingering effects of the Foucauldian “editor-function.” The number of surviving manuscripts indicates that Hoccleve’s work was well-regarded during the early fifteenth century, but his reputation fell with that of other non-Chaucerian medieval poets as later critics lost linguistic familiarity with Middle English. The …

The Roma Of Eastern Europe In Transition: Historical Marginalization, Misrepresentation, And Political Ethnogenesis, Michael Bobick Jan 2002

The Roma Of Eastern Europe In Transition: Historical Marginalization, Misrepresentation, And Political Ethnogenesis, Michael Bobick

Honors Papers

This thesis primarily deals with how the ongoing political transformations in Central and Eastern Europe have affected one particular group, the Roma or Gypsies. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, many initially greeted the radical reconfiguration of hegemonic governmental structures with nationalist zeal, and the democratization of socialist regimes was universally hailed as a victory for all. But for the Roma, a historically persecuted pariah group continually surrounded by misconceptions and Orientalist stereotypes, the radical transformation to "Western" capitalism and democracy must not be viewed in such a positive light. As an ethnic group the Roma exhibit a wide-ranging …

Word Is Born: Critical Gaps And The Poetics Of Hip-Hop, Kabir Hamid Jan 2002

Word Is Born: Critical Gaps And The Poetics Of Hip-Hop, Kabir Hamid

Honors Papers

I grew up listening to hip-hop music. Although I lived across the country from its birthplace, I would immerse myself in its sounds during the day and especially at night when my brother would play tapes before we fell asleep in our bunk beds. At a certain point in high school, I became obsessed with the music's lyrics. I was continually astonished by the cleverness, rhyme ability and edginess of the emcees I listened to. My admiration for hip-hop music developed alongside my admiration for the great authors I was reading at that time: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Herman Hesse and …

Persecution In The Fog Of War: The House Of Lords' Decision In Adan, Michael Kagan, William P. Johnson Jan 2002

Persecution In The Fog Of War: The House Of Lords' Decision In Adan, Michael Kagan, William P. Johnson

Michigan Journal of International Law

In this Article, we argue that the House of Lords' reasoning in Adan was seriously flawed. The House of Lords correctly recognized that evidence that minorities face a heightened risk of being persecuted can be sufficient to show a nexus to a Convention ground. Yet it erred when it went on to hold that only differentially at-risk individuals or groups can benefit from refugee status. If a person's risk of being persecuted is causally linked to his or her race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, the nexus requirement is satisfied irrespective of whether the …

Recurrent Participation In Rockcamp: Perceptions Of A K-12 Professional Development Program In Geology., Thomas Edward Repine Jan 2002

Recurrent Participation In Rockcamp: Perceptions Of A K-12 Professional Development Program In Geology., Thomas Edward Repine

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The geological experiences of six teachers with a history of sustained participation in the RockCamp geology professional development program were investigated. The research premise was based on Gordon's (1961, 1971) and Joyce and Weil's (1996) descriptions of the usefulness of synectics to present new ways of looking at familiar situations. The overarching goal was to delineate both reasons for participation and tropologically characterizations of their recurrent (sustained) participation. Qualitative data reflecting participatory perceptions were obtained using a series of three semi-structured interviews and an individually variable number of follow-up sessions. Additional data were derived from participant-constructed concept maps and a …

An Automated Damage Detection System For Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridge., Eduard S. Sazonov Jan 2002

An Automated Damage Detection System For Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridge., Eduard S. Sazonov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation presents a non-destructive automated damage detection system for the Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge. The goal of the system is to automate the damage detection procedure and enable early detection of structural damage. The system would complement the existing visual inspection procedure and eventually replace it. The designed system utilizes the method of strain energy mode shapes as the core damage detection method. The presented research covers both practical design issues and new theoretical developments in the area of non-destructive damage detection using strain energy mode shapes. The dissertation presents a methodology for exciting the structure, acquiring the vibration …

An Analysis Of An Interview Between A Carthusian Monk And A Benedictine Monk Utilizing Fillmore's Frame Model In Discourse Analysis., Joseph John Pielech Jan 2002

An Analysis Of An Interview Between A Carthusian Monk And A Benedictine Monk Utilizing Fillmore's Frame Model In Discourse Analysis., Joseph John Pielech

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis analyzed a three-hour audiotape interview (Appendices I and II) between Fr. Benedict Neenan, a professed Benedictine monk and Pr. Raphael Diamond, a Carthusian monk from the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration in Arlington, VT. The theoretical framework employed as the vehicle of analysis is Fillmoreís Frame Model (1976, 1977). By implementing Fillmoreís model, we are able to explain how and why certain frames arose as well as account for any breakdown in the discourse which resulted from inaccurate or incomplete mental representations the participants had. Fillmoreís model incorporates the linguistic, metalinguistic, and psycho-social elements of language, however he does …

The Relationships Among Self-Percieved Body Image, Interaction Involvement, And Interpersonal Communication Motives., Suzanna D'Ette Miller Jan 2002

The Relationships Among Self-Percieved Body Image, Interaction Involvement, And Interpersonal Communication Motives., Suzanna D'Ette Miller

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among self-perceived body image, interaction involvement, and interpersonal communication motives. Participants (N = 137) completed the Self-Perceived Body Image Scale (Richmond, 1998), the Interaction Involvement Scale (Cegala, 1981), and the Interpersonal Communication Motives Scale (Rubin, Perse, & Barbato, 1988). Results indicated that self-perceived body image was negatively related with the inclusion and relaxation motives, but was not significantly correlated with the pleasure, affection, escape, and control motives. It was also found that women have a significantly lower self-perceived body image than men. Limitations and directions for future research were also …

Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade Jan 2002

Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade

Faculty Publications

The ability to produce and comprehend human language involves at least two processes: the storage of units and the computations performed on those units. The role that storage and computation play in the processing of inflectional morphology is highly debated. At one end of the spectrum is the full storage model, which holds that all known words, whether morphologically complex or not, have separate entries in the mental lexicon (Jackendoff 1975, Manelis and Tharp 1977, Butterworth 1983, Bybee 1985, 1988, Rumelhart and McClelland 1986, McClelland 1988, Stemberger 1994, Rueckl, Mikolinski, Raveh, Miner, and Mars 1997). This position puts an enormous …

Black Internationalism: Embracing An Economic Paradigm, Jeffery M. Brown Jan 2002

Black Internationalism: Embracing An Economic Paradigm, Jeffery M. Brown

Journal Publications

The seemingly inexorable march toward a more unified political and economic world order poses strategic and leadership challenges to States, international organizations, and local activists unimaginable a generation ago. Supporters of this process argue that easing international economic regulatory restrictions, creating a more predictable legal order, and liberalizing investment standards will benefit the global economy by rendering financial transactions more efficient, thereby increasing trade and investment opportunities. Globalization poses important conceptual challenges to international law and international trade scholars committed to defending local interests and historically marginalized people against the perceived adverse effects of accelerated global economic expansion. Critics argue …

Race Relations, Suzanne W. Jones Jan 2002

Race Relations, Suzanne W. Jones

English Faculty Publications

Since the early nineteenth century, when white southern writers began to defend slavery, relationships between blacks and whites became a central concern in southern literature. Many nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century works by white writers exacerbated racial prejudice by reproducing southern white society's racist ideology. But other southern writers, both white and black, have attempted to redress this problem by using literature to dismantle stereotypes and to imagine new relationships. The results of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement speeded up the process, suggesting new plots, new endings, and new points of view to southern writers of both races.

Inspire And Equip: The Needs And Wants Of Students In A High School English Curriculum, Jocelyn Hays Jan 2002

Inspire And Equip: The Needs And Wants Of Students In A High School English Curriculum, Jocelyn Hays

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

A student walks into the classroom on the first day of school. He glances around to see if he knows anyone. Two of his friends wave him over, and he slides into a desk in close proximity to theirs. The bell rings and everyone turns to the front where the teacher starts talking about what you will be covering that semester. She points to a row of outdated anthologies full of short stories, poems, plays and mini-lessons designed to teach the intricacies of the English language. On the shelf below the anthologies is a class set of several different novels …
