Uses Of Antimicrobials In Plant Agriculture, Anne K. Vidaver
Uses Of Antimicrobials In Plant Agriculture, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Bacterial diseases of plants are less prevalent than diseases caused by fungi and viruses. Antimicrobials for prophylactic treatment of bacterial diseases of plants are limited in availability, use, and efficacy, and therapeutic use is largely ineffective. Most applications are by spray treatments in orchards. Monitoring and surveillance for drug resistance are not routinely done. In the United States, data on use of antimicrobials for treatment of bacterial diseases of plants are limited to streptomycin and oxytetracycline. Resistance to streptomycin has become widespread among bacterial phytopathogens; no resistance among these bacteria has yet been reported for oxytetracycline. No human health effects …

Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg
Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg
Theses and Dissertations
This paper, Crossing the Gender Barrier - a History of Male Nurses in Manitoba, Canada, will examine the role of men in a female-dominated profession. There is a distinct lack of historical writing on male nurses. Nursing historiography has generally focused on the women who constitute the majority of nurses. Indeed, much of the literature comes from within the nursing profession and the field of sociology, most of which lack an historical emphasis.
The development of the modem healthcare system is important to this work as it illustrates the evolution of the gender constructs that determined that physicians were male …

Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts
Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study tracked the chronology and severity of Myxobolus cerebralis infection and related it to survival of age-0 kokanee to determine whether M. cerebralis represented a significant agent of morality in the population. Environmental conditions and losses to predation were identified and linked to age-0 kokanee survival to identify other sources of mortality in the population. We attempted to track survival of age-0 kokanee from the outmigration into the reservoir until the end of the first growing season in September of each year. The number of age-0 kokanee that entered the reservoir was calculated by obtaining estimates of total egg …

In Vitro Genotoxicity Investigations Of Jet Fuel, Shawna M. Jackman
In Vitro Genotoxicity Investigations Of Jet Fuel, Shawna M. Jackman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The 60 billion gallons of jet propulsion fuels consumed worldwide create an exposure situation to over two million military and civilian personnel per year. The potential mutagenic, genotoxic and cytotoxic potency of military jet fuel was investigated in this study through in vitro systems such as human peripheral lymphocytes and metabolically competent hepatic cell lines. A battery of genotoxicological evaluations is employed, focusing on the comet assay to examine the induction of DNA damage. Cellular exposures to fuel were carried out directly and indirectly with an ethanol (EtOH) carrier. The fuel was found to be nonmutagenic with and without metabolic …

Inhibition Of Apoptosis By Gamma Interferon In Cells And Mice Infected With Chlamydia Muridarum (The Mouse Pneumonitis Strain Of Chlamydia Trachomatis), Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Alice Dautry-Varsat, Roger G. Rank, David M. Ojcius
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
The effect of gamma interferon (IFN-γ) on apoptosis due to infection by Chlamydia muridarum (the mouse pneumonitis strain of Chlamydia trachomatis) was studied in epithelial cells in culture and in the genital tracts of mice. IFN-γ concentrations that induce the formation of aberrant, persistent chlamydiae inhibit apoptosis due to C. muridarum infection. In cells treated with an IFN-γ concentration that leads to the development of a heterogenous population of normal and aberrant Chlamydia vacuoles, apoptosis was inhibited preferentially in cells that contained the aberrant vacuoles. The inhibitory effect of IFN-γ appears to be due in part to expression of host …
Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis, Epidemiology And Patterns In Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman A. Alrajhi, Ali M. Al-Barrak
Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis, Epidemiology And Patterns In Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman A. Alrajhi, Ali M. Al-Barrak
Saudi Medical Journal
Annual incidence rates of extrapulmonary tuberculosis have been increasing over the last few years in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. True rates may even be higher due to incomplete reporting. Diagnosis of this condition requires high clinical suspicion, special diagnostic procedures, special staining, and culture media for acid fast bacilli. Delayed diagnosis results in increasing morbidity, mortality, and cost to the health care system. Particularly in areas of high endemicity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, clinicians should be aware of the various forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The available epidemiology and patterns of various forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in the Kingdom of Saudi …

Impaired Renal Function Among Children In Alexandria, Egypt, Hebatullah O. Tawfik, Nahla K. Ragab, Zahira M. Gad, Mahmoud M. El-Kersh
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Impairment of renal function may occur as a result of a variety of conditions. Progression to chronic renal-disease may be prevented by early detection. This epidemiologic study aimed at revealing the predisposing factors and determinants for the development of impaired renal function among Egyptian children. METHODS: This is a case-control study conducted at Alexandria University Children9s Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt. All cases below 12 years of age diagnosed with impaired renal function over a total duration of 6 months (October 1999 through to March 2000) were investigated. The primary study tool was a structured questionnaire, which focused on variables suspected …

Phylogenetic Analysis Based On 18s Ribosomal Rna Gene Sequences Supports The Existence Of Class Polyacanthocephala (Acanthocephala), Martin Garcia-Varela, Michael P. Cummings, Gerardo Perez-Ponce De Leon, Scott Lyell Gardner, Juan P. Laclette
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Members of phylum Acanthocephala are parasites of vertebrates and arthropods and are distributed worldwide. The phylum has traditionally been divided into three classes, Archiacanthocephala, Palaeacanthocephala, and Eoacanthocephala; a fourth class, Polyacanthocephala, has been recently proposed. However, erection of this new class, based on morphological characters, has been controversial. We sequenced the near complete 18S rRNA gene of Polyacanthorhynchus caballeroi (Polyacanthocephala) and Rhadinorhynchus sp. (Palaeacanthocephala); these sequences were aligned with another 21 sequences of acanthocephalans representing the three widely recognized classes of the phylum and with 16 sequences from outgroup taxa. Phylogenetic relationships inferred by maximum-likelihood and maximum-parsimony analyses showed Archiacanthocephala …
Taking Evoultionary Transitions Seriously, Daniel R. Brooks
Taking Evoultionary Transitions Seriously, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The distinction between reversible and irreversible phenomena in biological information systems provides a basis for distinguishing microevolution from macroevolution. Biological transitions encompass the entire class of irreversible changes in biological systems, including physiological and developmental phenomena. Evolutionary transitions are the subset of biological transitions that have an impact on the quality and quantity of biological information transmitted to future generations. Evolutionary transitions are manifested empirically as macroevolutionary changes, i.e. evolutionary changes that can be detected only through phylogenetic analysis among groups of species sharing a unique common ancestry.
Health Sector Reform In South Asia: New Challenges And Constraints, Anwar Islam, M Zaffar Tahir
Health Sector Reform In South Asia: New Challenges And Constraints, Anwar Islam, M Zaffar Tahir
Community Health Sciences
In early 1990s, Jamison, Mosley and others concluded that a profound demographic and consequent epidemiological transition is taking place in developing countries. According to this classical model, by the year 2015, infectious diseases will account for only about 20% of deaths in developing countries as chronic diseases become more pronounced. These impending demographic and epidemiological transitions were to dominate the health sector reform agenda in developing countries. Following an analysis of fertility, mortality and other demographic and epidemiological data from South Asian and other developing countries, the paper argues that the classical model is in need of re-evaluation. A number …
The Development Of A Bluetongue Virus Diagnostic Assay Using Peptides Derived From The Structural Protein Vp7 And Nonstructural Protein Ns2, Yi Lu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Several peptides derived from viral proteins, VP7 and NS2 of bluetongue virus (BTV), were synthesized for an immunologic detection assay: distinguishing between bluetongue virus infected, vaccinated, and noninfected animals (ruminants) with dot blot analysis. The School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, supplied the serum samples from 24 bovine, 18 caprine, 23 ovine. Another 205 bison serum samples were obtained in Utah. The serum samples of BTV-infected animals revealed detectable antibodies to both VP7 and NS2 peptides, whereas vaccinated animals only exhibited antibodies against VP7. Noninfected animals did not display antibody against either viral peptide. These data confirmed the …
Retention Of Early Pregnancy And Its Relationship To Serum Progesterone In Dairy Cattle, Melanie J. Starbuck
Retention Of Early Pregnancy And Its Relationship To Serum Progesterone In Dairy Cattle, Melanie J. Starbuck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Factors affecting pregnancy maintenance between 28 and 67 days of gestation were studied in dairy cows (N = 211). Beginning on day 28 to 37 post breeding, cows were examined by ultrasonography for a viable pregnancy. Pregnant cows were re-examined for pregnancy losses during the late embryonic (≤day 45) and early fetal stages up to day 67. Overall pregnancy loss was 11%, mostly occurring before day 45. Cows with two corpora lutea maintained fewer pregnancies than cows with one corpus luteum. Pregnancy retention was less when concentrations of progesterone were low during days 28 to 37. The embryo apparently died …

A Comparative Analysis Of Mhc Genetic Diversity At The Class Ii Loci In Some Arctic Mammalian Species, Zhengyu Wei
Theses (Unassigned)
The genetic diversity at the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class II loci in some arctic mammalian species, musk ox, moose, caribou, and bears, have been characterized. The general objective of this study was to broaden the knowledge of the MHC polymorphism, selection, evolution and function in natural populations of arctic mammals. Allelic variation was assessed by analysis of MHC class II DR and DQ loci at exon 2 region. Sequences were amplified via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), followed by either DNA sequencing after cloning of the PCR products or single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis and sequencing. Monomorphism was observed …
