Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine campaign targeting primary school children in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the months of January and February 2000. METHODS: Pre and post measles-mumps-rubella vaccine blood samples were collected from 54 children from the first grade and 96 children from the 6th grade. Antibodies against measles, mumps and rubella were assayed using enzyme immunoassay and a backup test of plaque neutralization test. This assay was carried out at the Reference Center, Koch Institute, Berlin, Germany. RESULTS: When the backup test results were added, 96%-98% of children had protection level against measles before the campaign. …

Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Diabetes Disease Management Program: Progress In The Struggle For Sustained Behavior Change, Janice Clarke, Albert Crawford, David B. Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

The successful management of diabetes with a goal of achieving near-normoglycemia requires patients to make multiple lifestyle changes as part of an intensive, complex, and coordinated therapeutic regimen aimed at reducing the risk of complications associated with the disease. The difficulty in creating and sustaining these lifestyle behavior changes is a major stumbling block in achieving the desired therapeutic goal. An underlying assumption of comprehensive disease management is that regular, personal contact with nurses and ancillary health professionals will facilitate these lifestyle behavior changes for program participants. The results of a survey of self-reported data from 750 participants in a …

Morphometric Analysis Of Nonadult Characters Of Common Species Of American Gordiids (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea), Ben Hanelt, John J. Janovy Jr. Jun 2002

Morphometric Analysis Of Nonadult Characters Of Common Species Of American Gordiids (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea), Ben Hanelt, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

The nonadult stages, egg strings, eggs, larvae, and cysts of Gordius robustus, Paragordius varius, and Chordodes morgani are described morphometrically. The goal was to document the differences between species and to evaluate the usefulness of morphometrics in species identification. In concert, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA, a posteriori contrasts) statistical tests demonstrated that each species is morphometrically distinguishable from all others. Additionally, discriminant function analysis indicated that postseptum length, pseudointestine length, and stylet width were the most important variables in the discrimination of species based on larval characters. Finally, differences in oviposition behaviors …

Overstreet, Stephen S. Curran, Linda M. Pote, D. Tommy King, Charles K. Blend, Walter D. Grater

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The common pathogenic prodiplostomulum metacercaria in the flesh, mostly near the skin, of pond-produced channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus has been demonstrated to be Bolbophorus damnificus Overstreet & Curran n. sp. The catfish acquires the infection from the snail Planorbella trivolvis, the only known first intermediate host, and the species is perpetuated through the American white pelican Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, as confirmed by experimental infections with nestling and dewormed adult pelican specimens in conjunction with molecular data. It differs from the cryptic species Bolbophorus sp., also found concurrently in the American white pelican, by having eggs 123–129 μm rather …

Ethical Considerations In The Prevention And Management Of Genetic Disorders With Special Emphasis On Religious Considerations, Mohammed A. Albar Jun 2002

Ethical Considerations In The Prevention And Management Of Genetic Disorders With Special Emphasis On Religious Considerations, Mohammed A. Albar

Saudi Medical Journal

Genetic diseases include not only single gene disoders, but multifactorial, somatic cell genetic disorders, mitochondrial and even chromosomal. One in 4 adults will suffer from a multifactorial or a somatic cell genetic disease. The common diseases in the community have a hereditary component namely diabetes mellitus, hypertension, ischemic heart diseases and many types of cancer. Even monogenic diseases which affect a small number of the newborns (2%-3%), have a greater impact on childhood diseases up to age 15 years. Therefore, it is imperative to scrutinize the available methods of prevention and management of genetic disorders, their ethical implications, and since …

Physiological Factors Associated With The Alteration Of Reproductive Performance Of Commercial Egg Laying Chickens Infected With F-Strain Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Matthew Rex Burnham May 2002

Physiological Factors Associated With The Alteration Of Reproductive Performance Of Commercial Egg Laying Chickens Infected With F-Strain Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Matthew Rex Burnham

Theses and Dissertations

The F-strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (FMG) is commonly used in vaccination programs to displace infections by more virulent natural or wild type Mycoplasma gallisepticum strains. However, a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for altered egg production (EP) and egg quality in commercial layers infected with FMG is important, as these alterations can cause economic loss to the United States layer industry. This study was designed to examine potential mechanism(s) responsible for alterations in EP and egg quality by FMG-inoculation. The effects of FMG on production parameters and physiological characteristics of commercial laying hens were evaluated. In isolation units, 12 …

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson May 2002

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson

Honors Theses

On December 29, 1890 the United States Seventh Calvary descended upon a group of practitioners of the blossoming Ghost Dance religion and killed more than 300 Indians belonging to multiple Northern Plains nations. The massacre at Wounded Knee Creek was the apex of the United States government's violent campaign to win the American west from its original inhabitants, and it marked a transition in strategy in the young republic's assault on Native America. Having essentially won the land battles to annex the bulk of the economically valuable Native territory, the United States turned its attention away from the physical disposal …

Thermal Environmental Effects And Group Size On Growing Swine Immune Status, S.H. Pohl, D.J. Hurley, R.C. Thaler, C.C. Chase May 2002

Thermal Environmental Effects And Group Size On Growing Swine Immune Status, S.H. Pohl, D.J. Hurley, R.C. Thaler, C.C. Chase

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

The effects of environmental conditions on the immune system of growing pigs (30-50 kg) were studied using T and B cell proliferation counts. Pigs were exposed to a constant 32°C ambient temperature versus a naturally occurring diurnal temperature variation during hot weather and a constant 10°C vs 21°C ambient temperature during cold weather. In addition, T and B cell proliferation counts were compared for pigs in single, 9 and 18 pigs/pen group sizes. Concancavalin A (ConA), Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) mitogens were used to determine T cell activation over time. Pokeweed (PWM), Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Salmonella typhimurium …

Identification Of Neutralizing And Nonneutralizing Epitopes In The Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Gp5 Ectodomain, M. Ostrowski, J. A. Galeota, A. M. Jar, K. B. Platt, Fernando A. Osorio, O. J. Lopez May 2002

Identification Of Neutralizing And Nonneutralizing Epitopes In The Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Gp5 Ectodomain, M. Ostrowski, J. A. Galeota, A. M. Jar, K. B. Platt, Fernando A. Osorio, O. J. Lopez

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

After infection of swine with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), there is a rapid rise of PRRSV-specific nonneutralizing antibodies (NNA), while neutralizing antibodies (NA) are detectable not sooner than 3 weeks later. To characterize neutralizing epitopes, we selected phages from a 12-mer phage display library using anti-PRRSV neutralizing monoclonal antibody (MAb) ISU25-C1. In addition, phages carrying peptides recognized by swine antibodies with high seroneutralizing titer were isolated after subtracting from the library those clones binding to swine anti-PRRSV serum with no neutralizing activity. Two epitopes located in the ectodomain of PRRSV GP5 were identified. One of these epitopes, …
