Land Usage Impacts On Springhead Salamander Populations, At Callaway Extended Properties, Harris County, Georgia, Neil Allen Pearce May 2002

Land Usage Impacts On Springhead Salamander Populations, At Callaway Extended Properties, Harris County, Georgia, Neil Allen Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

Recent scientific studies have indicated that anrphibian populations appear to be declining in many areas of the world or exhibiting local population fluctuations. Some of the reasons given for this population decline are associated with land usage, and the negative biological impacts of many forms of land management practices. A study was conducted at the Callaway Gardens Extended Properties in Pine Mountain Georgia which compared the local aquatic salamander populations of five spring -fed streams in the Cason J. Callaway Memorial Forest, and five spring-fed streams in the Lower Valley Area. Using a cat ch-per-unit -effort sampling methodology, a comparison …

Spatial Population Dynamics Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) In A Central Appalachian Watershed, Peter John Lamothe May 2002

Spatial Population Dynamics Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) In A Central Appalachian Watershed, Peter John Lamothe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I examined the spatial population dynamics of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in a central Appalachian watershed. The objectives of my research were: (1) identify factors that influence reproduction; (2) determine if factors that influence reproduction influence the distribution and abundance of juvenile and adults; and (3) to determine if the spatial arrangement of stream habitat influence growth, residency, and population fluctuation rates. I used visual surveys and redd counts to quantify spatial variation in habitat quality and brook trout spawning activity. I conducted a mark-recapture study over four seasons to quantify population parameters. The results of my research show that: …

Overwintering Abundance And Distribution Of Striped Bass (Morone Saxtilis) In The Hudson River Estuary Using Hydroacoustic Techniques, Brian William Nagy May 2002

Overwintering Abundance And Distribution Of Striped Bass (Morone Saxtilis) In The Hudson River Estuary Using Hydroacoustic Techniques, Brian William Nagy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using a modification of standard techniques, a target strength to length relationship was developed for white perch (Morone americana) and striped bass (Morone saxtilis). This target strength to length relationship was compared to two standard relationships (Love and Foote). The calculated relationship was not found to be significantly different from Love's equation, but was different from Foote's equation. This calculated relationship was applied to hydroacoustic data collected on the Hudson River in December of 1995 and 1997. The goal of the hydroacoustic data collection was to assess the abundance and distribution of overwintering Hudson River striped bass. Results from this …

Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi May 2002

Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Environmental exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) has been of concern because of its potential contribution to the increased prevalence of acute and chronic airway diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of thiol changes (due to DEP exposure) in immune responses. Rats were exposed to OVA, DEP, or both by intratracheal instillation (IT) and/or inhalation. IT-DEP exposure significantly increased the inflammatory parameters and thiol levels in both Sprague-Dawley and Brown Norway rats. Exposure to DEP and/or OVA resulted in significant increases in neutrophils, LDH, total protein, and albumin content in lavage fluid. Alveolar macrophage (AM) …

The purpose of this study was to describe methods of value-added processing being employed by farmers in West Virginia, the amount of interest in value-added processing as expressed by agriculture extension agents and farmers, and identified the number of value-added producers in West Virginia. The population targeted with the initial survey consisted of 28 agriculture extension agents in West Virginia representing 55 counties. The second telephone survey was directed to value-added producers within the state. From this data, four farms, Thistledew Farm, Kelly Smith, Headwater Farms and Higson's Farm, were chosen to participate in case studies. Value-added producers were identified …

Effect Of Increased Energy In A Restricted Diet On Bone Mineral Composition And Breaking Load Of Young Rat Tibias, Marcia Ann Romanchak May 2002

Effect Of Increased Energy In A Restricted Diet On Bone Mineral Composition And Breaking Load Of Young Rat Tibias, Marcia Ann Romanchak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Osteoporosis is a major health problem in the United States and those that are on energy restricted diets such as anorectic subjects. Thirty Wistar strain, young male rats were fed diets with varying quantities of fat for a period of four weeks (energy intake 67--75% of requirement). The rat tibias' physical properties were measured. Bone mineral composition testing was conducted for calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, on the tibia shaft. There were no significant differences among the parameters of length, diameter, volume, density, bone bending (elasticity), fracture load, and minerals between experimental diets. There was a negative association between bending and …

An Analysis Of Learning Styles Among Young-Old Adults (Age 65-74) And Old-Old Adults (Age 75-99) And The Affect On Aging, Edith R. Ginsberg

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This dominant/less dominant design uses two methods (phenomenological and quantitative) to study, describe, examine, and analyze the learning style of two groups of older adults. The first group consists of Young-Old adults, who are between the ages of 65 and 74. The second group consists of Old-Old adults, who are between the ages of 75 and 99.

The researcher used the Kolb Learning Style Inventory Version 3 to determine the preferred learning style of each participant within each group. The results of the inventory for each participant was analyzed and compared between the two age groups. The analysis includes a …

The Impact Of Social Stereotypes As They Relate To Training Practices Of Female Athletes Competing In High-Risk Sports, Lisa Ciaravella May 2002

The Impact Of Social Stereotypes As They Relate To Training Practices Of Female Athletes Competing In High-Risk Sports, Lisa Ciaravella

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This study was conducted to investigate if a lack of conditioning and the increased rate of injury among female athletes are due primarily to social stereotypes associated with women's athletics. Ten professional female basketball players and ten high school basketball player were surveyed to determine how strength training is conceptualized and what role strength training had played in injury prevention. The study revealed that the increased rate of injury among female athletes are due to time constraints and/or lack of emphasis on strength and conditioning imposed on the athletes themselves for reasons of not strength training as opposed to social …

Masting By Eighteen New Zealand Plant Species: The Role Of Temperature As A Synchronizing Cue, Eric M. Schauber, Dave Kelly, Peter Turchin, Chris Simon, William G. Lee, Robert B. Allen, Ian J. Payton, Peter R. Wilson, Phil E. Cowan, R E. Brockie

Publications

Masting, the intermittent production of large flower or seed crops by a population of perennial plants, can enhance the reproductive success of participating plants and drive fluctuations in seed-consumer populations and other ecosystem components over large geographic areas. The spatial and taxonomic extent over which masting is synchronized can determine its success in enhancing individual plant fitness as well as its ecosystem-level effects, and it can indicate the types of proximal cues that enable reproductive synchrony. Here, we demonstrate high intra- and intergeneric synchrony in mast seeding by 17 species of New Zealand plants from four families across >150000 km …

Selection Of Clinical Trials: Knowledge Representation And Acquisition, Savvas Nikiforou May 2002

Selection Of Clinical Trials: Knowledge Representation And Acquisition, Savvas Nikiforou

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When medical researchers test a new treatment procedure, they recruit patients with appropriate health problems and medical histories. An experiment with a new procedure is called a clinical trial. The selection of patients for clinical trials has traditionally been a labor-intensive task, which involves matching of medical records with a list of eligibility criteria.

A recent project at the University of South Florida has been aimed at the automation of this task. The project has involved the development of an expert system that selects matching clinical trials for each patient. If a patient's data are not sufficient for choosing …
