Combining Two Nonparametric Tests Of Location, R. Clifford Blair May 2002

Combining Two Nonparametric Tests Of Location, R. Clifford Blair

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A distribution-free test is proposed whose power is similar to that of the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum or Terry-Hoeffding Normal Scores tests depending on which of these two tests is more powerful in a given data analysis situation, regardless of the population. This new statistic is distribution-free, and adds no new assumptions to those associated with the constituent tests. A table of critical values for the new statistic is given and some of its Type I error and power properties are examined.

Applying Spatial Randomness To Community Inclusion, Michael Wolf-Branigin May 2002

Applying Spatial Randomness To Community Inclusion, Michael Wolf-Branigin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A spatial analytic methodology incorporating true locations is demonstrated using Monte Carlo simulations as a complement to current psychometric and quality of life indices for measuring community inclusion. Moran's I, a measure of spatial autocorrelation, is used to determine spatial dependencies in housing patterns for multiple variables, including family/friends involvement in future planning, home size, and earned income. Simulations revealed no significant spatial autocorrelation, which is a socially desirable result for housing locations for people with disabilities. Assessing the absence of clustering provides a promising methodology for measuring community inclusion.

The Boundaries Of Liberalism In A Global Era: A Critique Of John Stuart Mill, Chris Daly May 2002

The Boundaries Of Liberalism In A Global Era: A Critique Of John Stuart Mill, Chris Daly

Honors Theses

The following study examines three works of John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, Utilitarianism, and Three Essays on Religion, and their subsequent effects on liberalism. Comparing the notion on individual freedom espoused in On Liberty to the notion of the social welfare in Utilitarianism, this analysis posits that it is impossible for a political philosophy to have two ultimate ends. Thus, Mill's liberalism is inherently flawed. As this philosophy was the foundation of Mill's progressive vision for humanity that he discusses in his Three Essays on Religion, this vision becomes paradoxical as well. Contending that the neo-liberalist global economic order is …

An Efficiency Analysis Of Contracts For The Provision Of Telephone Services To Prisons, Justin Carver May 2002

An Efficiency Analysis Of Contracts For The Provision Of Telephone Services To Prisons, Justin Carver

Federal Communications Law Journal

As the numbers of prisons and prisoners continue to increase, so does the market for prison services. One of the more lucrative segments of this industry is the telephone market. To the extent that the services are provided to the prisoners, the relationship resembles a third party beneficiary contract, but due to the perverse financial incentives and the political climate surrounding prisons and prisoners, neither the state nor the private entity acts in the best interests of the consumers in particular or of society in general. This Article will analyze the efficiency of these contracts, introduce alternate arrangements, and compare …

The Concrete Barrier At The End Of The Information Superhighway: Why Lack Of Local Rights-Of-Way Access Is Killing Competitive Local Exchange Carriers, Christopher R. Day May 2002

The Concrete Barrier At The End Of The Information Superhighway: Why Lack Of Local Rights-Of-Way Access Is Killing Competitive Local Exchange Carriers, Christopher R. Day

Federal Communications Law Journal

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 contained the promise of a deregulated national telecommunications market with unfettered competition in both the local and long-distance telecommunications markets. Unfortunately, five years after the Act was signed, competition in local telephony is still not a reality in many areas. While some of the blame may be placed on failed business models and the withdrawal of venture capital from the market, a series of regulatory failures have also served to create an inhospitable environment for competitive local exchange carriers. One of the areas where this failure has been most evident is in governmental failure to …

Use Of Antiplatelets And Lipid Lowering Therapy In Patients With Peripheral Vascular Disease, Abdulaziz S. Aldawood, Roman Jaeschke May 2002

Use Of Antiplatelets And Lipid Lowering Therapy In Patients With Peripheral Vascular Disease, Abdulaziz S. Aldawood, Roman Jaeschke

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of antiplatelet and lipid lowering therapy among patients undergoing peripheral vascular surgery, and to compare their use with that reported among a similar population of patients in Canada. METHODS: Chart review of a cohort of 52 patients undergoing peripheral vascular surgery. The study was carried out at King Fahad National Guard Hospital, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in May 2000. RESULTS: On discharge, less than 50% of the patients received any antiplatelet or antithrombotic medication. Only 13% of the patients received lipid-lowering therapy. Those findings parallel those of Canadian publications. CONCLUSION: Current literature supports the use …

The Florida Community College Statewide Collection Assessment Project: Outcomes And Impact, Anna H. Perrault, Tina Adams, Rhonda Smith, Jeannie Dixon

School of Information Faculty Publications

A collection assessment project was conducted in 1998 of the twenty-eight community college library/Library Resource Center (LRC) collections in Florida.1 The evaluative materials provided to each of the institutions produced a number of outcomes. To assess the project’s impact, a survey was conducted in fall 2000. The impact study found that, in the opinion of library administrators, the Florida Community College Collection Assessment study had influenced the appropriation of additional funds, informed librarians’ collection development decisions, and affected the weeding of collections through the presentation of institution-specific collection assessment reports that were provided for each library. The major finding of …

A Study Of Self-Esteem In Middle Children, Louise Henshaw May 2002

A Study Of Self-Esteem In Middle Children, Louise Henshaw

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether middle children who are the only male or only female child in the family have higher self-esteem than those middle children who are the same gender as one or more of their siblings. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was administered to a total of fifty middle children, who ranged in age from ten through fourteen years old. These children were students in grades five through eight at a small, urban middle school in southern New Jersey. There were thirty-six students who had one or more siblings of the same gender as the …

Injunctive Relief In The Internet Age: The Battle Between Free Speech And Trade Secrets, Adam W. Johnson May 2002

Injunctive Relief In The Internet Age: The Battle Between Free Speech And Trade Secrets, Adam W. Johnson

Federal Communications Law Journal

The information revolution has led to technological innovations in the movement, storage, and dissemination of information. The Internet allows a person, with good or bad intent, to distribute information to millions of people. This ability raises serious implications when trade secret information is the subject of Internet postings. Once a trade secret becomes publicly available, it loses its legal secrecy, and special legal protection. Additionally, competitors and everyone else on the Internet can gain access to the information. For those who rely on trade secret protection to guard their inventions, this presents a growing concern.

This Note will illustrate the …

Articles

The essays by Martha Nussbaum and Ian Hacking both raise important issues about the some of the central themes of The Mismeasure of Desire and it is a pleasure and an honor to have such careful, significant and interdisciplinary thinkers engage my ideas. In this brief reply, I address some of their challenges.

A search has been made for lepton-flavor-violating interactions of the type e+p→lX, where l denotes a μ or τ with high transverse momentum, at a center-of-mass energy √s of 300 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. No evidence was found for lepton-flavor violation and constraints were derived on leptoquarks (LQs) that could mediate such interactions. For LQ masses below √s, limits are set on λeq1βlq, where λeq1 is the coupling of the LQ to an electron and a first-generation quark q1 and βlq is the branching ration of the LQ to l …

Coping With College Life: The Effect Of Writing On Freshman Adjustment To College, Peter Wakefield Winslett May 2002

Coping With College Life: The Effect Of Writing On Freshman Adjustment To College, Peter Wakefield Winslett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adjusting to college can be a difficult time for some students. While most freshmen do eventually make a normal adjustment, there are several who do not. There is evidence that failing to adjust to college life can lead to dropping out of college. In addition, students who have adjustment problems are at risk for having lower grades and fewer intimate personal relationships (Cooper, Healy, & Simpson, 1994).

There have been several programs offered by colleges to help their students facilitate adjustment. However, many programs either do not attract the students most in need of assistance or have an intrusive quality …

What Matters Most: Evidence-Based Findings Of Key Factors Affecting The Educational Experiences And Outcomes For Girls And Boys Throughout Their Primary And Secondary Schooling, Ken Rowe, Kathy Rowe

Student learning processes

Much of the prevailing public interest and media 'hype' surrounding gender issues in education - especially differences in boys' and girls' experiences and outcomes of schooling - amount to little more than anecdotal rhetoric and opinion. In this expanded, supplementary submission to the Inquiry Into the Education of Boys, key findings are presented highlighting 'real' effects from recent and emerging evidence-based research on teacher and school effectiveness. For example, whereas on average, boys' literacy skills, general academic achievements, attitudes, behaviours and experiences of schooling are notably poorer than those of girls - despite their socioeconomic and sociocultural backgrounds - these …

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen May 2002

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Modern interdisciplinary research in statistical science encompasses a wide field: agriculture, biology, biomedical sciences along with bioinformatics, clinical sciences, education, environmental and public health disciplines, genomic science, industry, molecular genetics, socio-behavior, socio-economics, toxicology, and a variety of other disciplines. Statistical science has historically had mathematical perspectives dominating theoretical and methodological developments. Yet, the advent of modern information technology has opened the doors for highly computation intensive statistical tools (i.e., software), wherein mathematical aspects are often de-emphasized. Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDDM) is now becoming a dominating force, with bioinformatics as a notable example. In view of this apparent discordance …
