Demographic Trends, Pronatalism, And Nationalist Ideologies In The Late Twentieth Century, Leslie King May 2002

Demographic Trends, Pronatalism, And Nationalist Ideologies In The Late Twentieth Century, Leslie King

Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article explores the relationship between demographic trends and nationalist ideologies through an analysis of fertility policies in France, Romania, Singapore and Israel. Each of these countries has sought to increase birthrates through government initiatives. I examine the extent to which pronatalist programmes in these countries reflect ethno-nationalist ideologies, as opposed to more inclusive civic/cultural nationalist visions, and find that policies are moving in a more civic/cultural nationalist direction. Pronatalist policies are less often specifically aimed at dominant racial/ethnic groups and are less oriented towards ‘traditional’ gender roles. I argue that ethno-nationalist visions of the nation may become less influential, …

Seeds Of Distrust: Federal Regulation Of Genetically Modified Foods, Thomas O. Mcgarity May 2002

Seeds Of Distrust: Federal Regulation Of Genetically Modified Foods, Thomas O. Mcgarity

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article describes and evaluates the existing federal regulatory regime for protecting public health from risks posed by foods derived from GM plants. Part I briefly describes the technology involved in genetically modifying plants and relates the ongoing debates over the risks and benefits of GM food plants. Part II examines in detail the regulatory regime that has evolved in the United States to regulate the safety of GM foods, focusing in particular upon the pervasive role that the substantial equivalence doctrine has played in that regime. Finally, Part III suggests a more precautionary approach toward regulating GM foods that …

Parental-Status Employment Discrimination: A Wrong In Need Of A Right?, Peggie R. Smith May 2002

Parental-Status Employment Discrimination: A Wrong In Need Of A Right?, Peggie R. Smith

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article evaluates strategies to challenge employment discrimination based on parental status. Specifically, it examines proposals put forth by some commentators to establish parental status as a protected class. While such a suggestion is attractive, the Article argues that it ultimately offers few practical advantages and remains wedded to a limited conception of equality, requiring only that employment decisions not reflect differences based on parenthood. Consequently, such a strategy would satisfy anti-discrimination legislation so long as both men and women with parental obligations are equally ill-treated. The Article concludes that a shift in perspective from gender to parental status will …

In Light Of Reason And Experience: Against A Crime Fraud Exception To The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege, Catherine Thompson Dobrowitsky May 2002

In Light Of Reason And Experience: Against A Crime Fraud Exception To The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege, Catherine Thompson Dobrowitsky

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note argues against the adoption of a crime fraud exception to the federal psychotherapist-patient privilege. Part I argues that the restrictive legal elements of the privilege adequately exclude fraudulent or criminal statements from protection. Part II addresses the needed distinction between the dangerous patient exception and the crime fraud exception to the psychotherapist-patient privilege and concludes that the adoption of a crime fraud exception would threaten a limited dangerous patient exception. Part III contends that the policies underlying the attorney-client and psychotherapist-patient privileges must be distinguished and do not merit a shared crime fraud exception. This Note concludes that …

A Priest In Transition, Terry Brizz May 2002

A Priest In Transition, Terry Brizz

Student Scholarship

In the U.S Roman Catholic Church, there is a concern that incoming pastors are ill-prepared to manage parishes. In the past 40 years, the number of men entering the priesthood has dropped dramatically. In many dioceses across the country, this dwindling supply of priests has led to priests becoming pastors after only two or three years from ordination. With the declining number of priests, the traditional apprenticeship model for training priests to develop into pastors is becoming severely challenged. Historically, priests worked under the tutelage of a number of pastors (4 or 5) over a number of years (20 to …

Assessing Allele Frequencies Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Dna Pools By Pyrosequencing Technology, Jon Wasson, Gary Skolnick, Latisha Love-Gregory, M. Alan Permutt May 2002

Assessing Allele Frequencies Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Dna Pools By Pyrosequencing Technology, Jon Wasson, Gary Skolnick, Latisha Love-Gregory, M. Alan Permutt

Open Access Publications

Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association studies searching for differences in allele frequencies between cases and controls have been widely used for genetic analysis. Individual genotyping is prohibitively expensive in large sample sizes. Pooling of samples provides the obvious advantage of higher throughput and lower cost. Here we report our results with the analysis of SNP allele frequencies in DNA pools using Pyrosequencing technology. For seven different SNPs, we observed a mean difference of 1.1 +/- 0.6% between allele frequencies determined in two different DNA pools (n = 150 cases and 150 controls) compared to individually genotyped samples.

School University Partnerships : What Do The Schools Want?, Laurie Brady May 2002

School University Partnerships : What Do The Schools Want?, Laurie Brady

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The growing perception of a need for robust school university partnerships to improve the quality of teacher education, and to promote learning outcomes for school students, has been given further impetus by the Ramsey recommendations in Quality Matters (2000). This article briefly reviews the literature on both professional development schools, and recent school university partnership initiatives in Australia, and reports a survey of all state primary school principals in NSW, on their support for a broad range of school university partnership activities. The findings indicate strong and uniform support for the full range of activities including supervision and mentoring, collaborative …

A Sampling Of Athletes Attitudes Toward Alcohol And Drug Use In College And Professional Athletes, Gregory A. Andis

Graduate Theses

Athletes of today are looking for every advantage over the competition, often subjecting themselves to harmful drugs. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of athletes concerning drug use. Subjects for the study were 71 athletes acquired from the local college, university and professional hockey team. A Modified Tricker/Cook Drug Attitude Survey was used to compare each athlete’s response to the other respondents by looking at each of the following categories, sport, country, ethnicity, age, gender, level of education and level of activity. The survey was administered and results were calculated. Results showed that athletes sport, country, …

The Effect Of The Asian Financial Crisis On The Performance Of Korean Nationwide Banks, Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller May 2002

The Effect Of The Asian Financial Crisis On The Performance Of Korean Nationwide Banks, Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

The Asian financial crisis spread its effect quickly across a number of countries. Korea faced serious problems in her financial and corporate sectors. This paper considers the performance of Korean nationwide banks before, during, and immediately after the Asian financial crisis. The performance of Korean nationwide banks took a big hit in 1998. Most banks recovered somewhat in 1999 with the notable exception of the further deterioration of Seoul. Several factors possess strong correlations with bank performance. Among other standard findings, equity to assets correlates positively with bank performance, even when the government recapitalized a number of institutions that performed …

A Comparison Of Environmental Impact Assessment Process Between The National Environmental Protection Act (Nepa) And The Basic Environmental Protection Act (Bepa), V An Rhee

LLM Theses and Essays

The importance of environmental laws in the developed countries has been well recognized for a long time and a number of regulations, orders and statutes are practically operated for protection of human environments. The environmental laws are firmly located as one of major laws in the legal systems of the United States. Although Korea’s environmental laws were made when those of the United States were created, different backgrounds Korea has affect from establishment of them to development and have brought about harms to environments, which are not originally intended. After several amendments of environmental laws of Korea, there is the …

Balancing Interests: Statute Of Limitations And Repose In Medical Malpractice Cases, Laurie L. Paterson May 2002

Balancing Interests: Statute Of Limitations And Repose In Medical Malpractice Cases, Laurie L. Paterson

LLM Theses and Essays

In the 1970s a crisis occurred in the medical malpractice insurance industry. As tort law began to favor plaintiffs, the number and severity of medical malpractice claims increased. Insurance companies inundated with a deluge of claims correspondingly increased their premiums or pulled out of the malpractice insurance industry all together. Some physicians were unable to obtain medical malpractice insurance and others were faced with as much as a 300% rise in insurance premiums. As a result, the medical profession urged states to enact medical malpractice tort reform. Some states’ tort reform included legislation such as award caps, collateral source offset, …

Gay Colony Formation In The North American City Withatlanta, Georgia As The Primary Focus, Christopher W. Golden May 2002

Gay Colony Formation In The North American City Withatlanta, Georgia As The Primary Focus, Christopher W. Golden

Master's Projects

The history of Gay colonization in North America is a very complex issue. First it is necessary to focus on what factors led to the creation of Gay communities in North America. From those factors we must determine how that community made its mark on the urban landscape and how that community looks today. In order to do this, I have chosen to illustrate the Gay community on a national scale then focus on a city that is a microcosm of this change. That city is Atlanta, Georgia.

The City of Atlanta is a large city with a well-established Gay …

Uses Of Antimicrobials In Plant Agriculture, Anne K. Vidaver May 2002

Uses Of Antimicrobials In Plant Agriculture, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Bacterial diseases of plants are less prevalent than diseases caused by fungi and viruses. Antimicrobials for prophylactic treatment of bacterial diseases of plants are limited in availability, use, and efficacy, and therapeutic use is largely ineffective. Most applications are by spray treatments in orchards. Monitoring and surveillance for drug resistance are not routinely done. In the United States, data on use of antimicrobials for treatment of bacterial diseases of plants are limited to streptomycin and oxytetracycline. Resistance to streptomycin has become widespread among bacterial phytopathogens; no resistance among these bacteria has yet been reported for oxytetracycline. No human health effects …

Projected Smoking-Related Deaths Among U.S. Youth: A 2000 Update, Ellen J. Hahn, Mary Kay Rayens, Frank J. Chaloupka, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Jun Yang

Nursing Reports

This paper projects the long term consequences of the rise in youth smoking in the 1990s by updating the state estimates for projected smoking-related deaths among youth in the U.S. using information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2000 and the U.S. Census 2000. This analysis is similar to that from an earlier study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office on Smoking and Health (MMWR, 45[44], November 8, 1996). The 1996 analysis used young adult smoking prevalence data from 1994 and 1995; whereas, the analysis presented here represents smoking prevalence data from 2000. …
