The Effects Of Interdisciplinary Team Size On Student Achievement, Behavior, Attendance, And Student Perceptions About Community, James Vernon Sutfin

Student Work

This study explored the impact of interdisciplinary team size on student achievement, behavior, attendance, and perceptions about community in an affluent Midwestern suburban middle school. Interdisciplinary teams were divided up in to three-, four- and five-teacher configurations. Data were gathered through the use of the district's School Information and Management System (SIMS) as well as the School Ethical Climate Index (SECI) (Schulte et al., 2002). The dependent variables were (a) academic achievement, (b) student behavior, (c) student attendance, and (d) student perceptions about community. Independent variables were the interdisciplinary team and grade level. All four research questions were answered using …

Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson Dec 2002

Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson

Faculty Publications

In past research, relational and physical forms of peer victimization have been identified that have been shown to be significantly associated with social–psychological maladjustment. These forms of victimization, although studied primarily within the group peer context, also occur within dyadic relationships such as friendships. Gender differences in friend victimization and the association between friend victimization and children's social–psychological adjustment were examined. Results showed that boys were more physically victimized by their friends than were girls. Girls were more relationally than physically victimized by their friends. Friend victimization was related to adjustment difficulties for both boys and girls; however, friend physical …

Assessment Of Human Alveolar Bone Density By Using Volumetric Ct Machine, Prasit Aranyarachkul Dec 2002

Assessment Of Human Alveolar Bone Density By Using Volumetric Ct Machine, Prasit Aranyarachkul

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study evaluated bone density in designated implants sites using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and compared the measurements to those of quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and subjective bone density evaluation. Sixty-two designated implant sites in 9 human cadavers jaws were used. Indicator rods, 2 mm in diameter, were placed in all sites. CT images representing 1 mm bucco-lingual slices immediately mesial and distal to the rods were selected for density evaluations. Bone density in Hounsfield units (HU) was assessed in a standardized implant area superimposed on the images, and also subjectively evaluated by 2 independent examiners using the Lekholm & …

Psychosocial Predictors Of Survival In Persons With Hiv Or Aids, Carlos A. Escoto Dec 2002

Psychosocial Predictors Of Survival In Persons With Hiv Or Aids, Carlos A. Escoto

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The HIV pandemic is in its second decade of existence. HIV has distinguished itself by effecting every part of the globe. It is estimated that there are currently over 40 million people living with HIV or AIDS diagnoses in the world today. Great strides have been made in the treatment of HIV and AIDS. Combination therapy of drugs has been shown to keep viral replication at very low levels. The result of drug therapies has resulted in keeping persons with HIV from progression to full blown AIDS. Also, drug therapies are responsible for a significant drop in mortality rates from …

The Effect Of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis On Condylar Rotation In Rabbits, Shelton Hsu Dec 2002

The Effect Of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis On Condylar Rotation In Rabbits, Shelton Hsu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is the gradual lengthening of a healing bone. This surgical technique can be applied to the jawbone to correct an asymmetry or deficiency of the mandible. DO has been added to the list of treatment options for patients with craniofacial anomalies or excessive dental crowding.

Although mandibular distraction osteogenesis has been successfully performed in many patients, the comprehensive effects on the TMJ are not fully understood. The purpose of this study is to compare the amount of rotational and positional change that occurs at the condyles when the rabbit mandible is widened at the midline and paramedian …

An Examination Of Death Salience: A Component In The Death Anxiety Model, Rachel A. Mason Dec 2002

An Examination Of Death Salience: A Component In The Death Anxiety Model, Rachel A. Mason

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Reviews of the literature have identified few consistent theoretical approaches in the assessment of death anxiety and death attitudes for patients diagnosed with a potentially life threatening illness, such as cancer. This illness experience forces patients to contemplate their mortality. The present study employed a portion of the Death Anxiety Model to examine the relationships between death salience, beliefs about the self, beliefs about the world, death meaning, and death anxiety. Three groups (N = 121) who differed on death salience were examined: cancer survivors (intrapersonal - high salience), spouses of cancer survivors (interpersonal - moderate salience), and healthy patients …

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "I am writing in response to Lisa Heinzerling's article “Five-Hundred Life-Saving Interventions and Their Misuse in the Debate Over Regulatory Reform,”1 published in the Spring 2002 issue of Risk: Health, Safety & Environment. Dr. Heinzerling comments on two papers that my colleagues and I, affiliated with the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, produced as part of research funded by the National Science Foundation over a decade ago. The first is the article “Five-Hundred Lifesaving Interventions and Their Cost-Effectiveness,” published in the journal Risk Analysis in 1995. In this article we described the cost per year of lives saved of …

Preface, Volume 1, Numbers 1 & 2, 2002, Jaime Ackerman, Elizabeth Hochberg

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Pierce Law Review. You may notice that a number of the articles in this edition are not typical for a law review. This is because the articles in this edition were held over from our predecessor publication, a scientific journal entitled RISK: Health, Safety & Environment. As a result. the articles in this volume are rather atypical for a traditional law review. and not all of them entirely legally-related in nature. Nonetheless, we hope you enjoy having the opportunity to read articles on topics you would not have reviewed otherwise.

Historical Development Of The Linear Nonthreshold Dose-Response Model As Applied To Radiation, Ronald L. Kathren Dec 2002

Historical Development Of The Linear Nonthreshold Dose-Response Model As Applied To Radiation, Ronald L. Kathren

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "Despite the nearly universal adoption of the linear nonthreshold dose response model (LNT) as the primary basis for radiation protection standards for the past half century, the LNT remains highly controversial and a contentious topic of discussion among health physicists, radiation biologists, and other radiological scientists. Indeed, it has been pointed out that the LNT has assumed the status of a paradigm, synonymous with an ideal, standard, or paragon or perhaps to some, a sacred cow. Reduced to its very basics, the LNT postulates that every increment of ionizing radiation dose, however small, carries with it a commensurate increase …

The Effectiveness Of Heart Failure Disease Management: Initial Findings From A Comprehensive Program, Janice L. Clarke, David B. Nash Dec 2002

The Effectiveness Of Heart Failure Disease Management: Initial Findings From A Comprehensive Program, Janice L. Clarke, David B. Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

A prevalent, chronic condition among members of the mushrooming elderly population in the United States, heart failure (HF) is a logical focus for population-based disease management. Evidence supporting the premise that multidisciplinary interventions can significantly improve clinical outcomes while decreasing the cost of medical care for people with HF is steadily mounting. A growing number of controlled and observational studies focus on the effects of HF disease management on re-admission rates, length of stay, and improvement in appropriate diagnostic testing and prescribing. This paper describes a large-scale, comprehensive HF program and reports on clinical quality, utilization, and financial outcomes observed …

Do Temporary Help Jobs Improve Labor Market Outcomes? A Pilot Analysis With Welfare Clients, David H. Autor, Susan N. Houseman Dec 2002

Do Temporary Help Jobs Improve Labor Market Outcomes? A Pilot Analysis With Welfare Clients, David H. Autor, Susan N. Houseman

Reports

We draw upon administrative data from an unusual policy experiment in the state of Michigan to study the effects of temporary agency employment among welfare-to-work clients on job retention, program recidivism, and earnings. To identify these effects, we exploit the fact that welfare-to-work clients in one Michigan county were randomly assigned to service providers who had substantially different placement rates in temporary agencies but otherwise similar policies. Our findings indicate that moving welfare clients who otherwise would have been unemployed into temporary agency jobs provides some benefits to these workers, primarily by increasing their short-term earnings. Temporary agency jobs also …

Sport Fish Consumption Advisory For West Virginia, William Alvin Warnick Dec 2002

Sport Fish Consumption Advisory For West Virginia, William Alvin Warnick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The risk based sport fish consumption advisory protocol, West Virginia Sport Fish Consumption Advisory Guide (the Guide), was drafted for the state. Fish were collected from ten West Virginia sites (5 previously identified as contaminated, 5 previously identified as uncontaminated). Fish samples were collected, processed and analyzed for total mercury concentration and Aroclors (PCBs). Recommended meal frequencies were calculated from contaminant levels and based on the Guide. Mean fillet sample contaminant levels were compared to composite sample levels and found to require the same level or in one case a more protective of consumption advisory. Ten composite samples had Aroclor …

Animals As Objects, Or Subjects, Of Rights, Richard A. Epstein Dec 2002

Animals As Objects, Or Subjects, Of Rights, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

From the earliest times, animals were understood as object of human rights. That result did not depend on some limited understanding of their capabilities for cognition and sensation, but rather rested on the strong sense that without domestication human beings could not secure their own advancement. The modern claims for animal rights cannot therefore be justified by an appeal to some newer and deeper understanding of the subject, but must rest on the claim that what they share with human beings is more important than what separates them. Those common elements do justify some level of animal protection but does …

Transfer Trauma Following A Community Evacuation Of The Institutionalized Elderly, Marlys J. Bratteli Dec 2002

Transfer Trauma Following A Community Evacuation Of The Institutionalized Elderly, Marlys J. Bratteli

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the impact of evacuation on the institutionalized elderly following the 1996–97 Greater Grand Forks flood. Older adults, living in two long-term care facilities, were evacuated to temporary shelters. Later moved to other long-term care facilities or to the homes of family members, they experienced multiple moves. In order to learn what impact the evacuation had on the institutionalized elderly, two major questions were studied. These were: (1) What were the experiences of the institutionalized elderly during the evacuation? (2) What were the coping strategies used by the institutionalized elderly?

Data were gathered using triangulation: interviews, observation and …

Immunocontraception In Japanese Quail Using Mammalian Gnrh Compared To Chicken Gnrh-I And Chicken Gnrh-Ii, Marianna Burks Dec 2002

Immunocontraception In Japanese Quail Using Mammalian Gnrh Compared To Chicken Gnrh-I And Chicken Gnrh-Ii, Marianna Burks

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Because of increasing numbers in wildlife, immunocontraceptives are being developed to decrease these animals and other birds. This study was conducted in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey Midcontinent Science Center in Fort Collins, Colorado (USGS), to determine whether mammalian GnRH (m-GnRH) can be used as a potential immunocontraceptive to decrease reproductive fertility in mature Japanese quail.

Eighty male and female Japanese quail were injected with either mGnRH, chicken GnRH-I (c-GnRH-I), chicken GnRH-II (c-GnRH-II), or vehicle (controls). Blood samples were analyzed for estrogen (E2) and testosterone (T) levels, in addition to antibody titer (Aby) development against the corresponding conjugated …

Cold Acclimation Strategy Is Highly Variable Among The Sunfishes (Centrarchidae), Peter J. Lavrentyev, Deidra R. Tschantz, Elizabeth L. Crockett Dec 2002

Cold Acclimation Strategy Is Highly Variable Among The Sunfishes (Centrarchidae), Peter J. Lavrentyev, Deidra R. Tschantz, Elizabeth L. Crockett

Biology Faculty Research

We tested the hypothesis that the physiological strategy for acclimating to low body temperature is similar among closely related fish. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomonix nigromaculatus), and white crappie (Pomonix annularis), all members of the family Centrarchidae, were acclimated to 5° and 25°C. Morphometric variables (total mass, total length, organ masses) and enzyme activities (hexokinase; lactate dehydrogenase; and cytochrome oxidase in heart, liver, and muscle) were measured in 5°C- and 25°C-acclimated fish at 5° and 25°C assay temperatures. Each species displayed a distinct physiological response to cold acclimation that differed …
