Searching For The Middle Ground: Mechanisms Of Chromosome Alignment During Mitosis, Tarun M. Kapoor, Duane A. Compton May 2002

Searching For The Middle Ground: Mechanisms Of Chromosome Alignment During Mitosis, Tarun M. Kapoor, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

The contributions of key molecules predicted to align chromosomes at the center of the mitotic spindle have been recently examined. New results dictate that models for how chromosomes align during the early stages of mitosis must be revised to integrate properties of microtubule-based motor proteins as well as microtubule dynamics.

Ornithine Decarboxylase Encoded By Chlorella Virus Pbcv-1, Tiara A. Morehead, James R. Gurnon, Byron Adams, Kenneth Nickerson, Lisa A. Fitzgerald, James L. Van Etten

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Sequence analysis of the 330-kb genome of chlorella virus PBCV-1 revealed an open reading frame, A207R, which encodes a protein with 37–41% amino acid identity to ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) from many eukaryotic organisms. The a207r gene was cloned and the protein was expressed as a His-A207R fusion protein in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein catalyzes pyridoxal 5’-phosphate-dependent decarboxylation of ornithine to putrescine, the first step in the polyamine biosynthetic pathway The enzyme has a pH optimum of 9.0 and a temperature optimum of 42°C, and it requires dithiothreitol for maximal activity. The enzyme has a Km, for ornithine of …

The Effects Of Subliminal Messages In Print Advertisements, Jamie Lynne Wilfong May 2002

The Effects Of Subliminal Messages In Print Advertisements, Jamie Lynne Wilfong

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

One very controversial topic within advertising is subliminal advertising. There are many studies about the subject of subliminal messages and their effects (Trappey, 1996). This type of advertising uses subliminal stimuli, messages presented so fast or so softly or so masked by other messages that one is not aware of "seeing" or "hearing" them (Hawkins, Best, Coney, 1995). When marketers put subliminal messages in advertising, they create subliminal advertising. Subliminal advertising, therefore, involves the use of words, pictures, and shapes that are purposely inserted into advertising materials so that the viewers of the material perceive the imagery at a subconscious …

Elucidating The Immunoactivity Of A Goat Serum Peptide, Todd Avery Parker May 2002

Elucidating The Immunoactivity Of A Goat Serum Peptide, Todd Avery Parker

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of these studies was to determine if an immunomodulator was present in caprine serum. Controlled studies demonstrated that CSF-I, material fractionated from caprine serum possessed an immunomodulatory compound. Caprine serum was further fractionated into it?s peptidic components and a small contaminant of immunoglobulin G and albumin (Caprine serum fraction - immunomodulator 2, or CSF-I2). This was refined to a three peptidic isolate collectively identified as tri-peptidic immunostimulant or TPI. CSF-I2 does not possess antibacterial capabilities (as typically characteristic of a cationic peptide or defensin), does not contain a level of endotoxin sufficient to promote a pyrogenic response, and …

Development Of A Nutrient And Dissolved Oxygen Water Quality Model For The Saint Louis Bay Watershed, Janna Marie Kieffer May 2002

Development Of A Nutrient And Dissolved Oxygen Water Quality Model For The Saint Louis Bay Watershed, Janna Marie Kieffer

Theses and Dissertations

Nutrient enrichment, which can be detrimental to the health of aquatic systems, is one of the leading causes of impairment of our Nations? waters. Development and initial calibration of a hydrologic, hydrodynamic, and water quality model of dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentration for the St. Louis Bay watershed in coastal Mississippi is documented herein. The model was developed using the USEPA BASINS 3.0 analysis system and WinHSPF, a comprehensive watershed loading and transport modeling software. The resulting model simulates significant watershed and instream physical, chemical and biological processes including rainfall runoff and associated water quality from a variety of land …

Physiological Factors Associated With The Alteration Of Reproductive Performance Of Commercial Egg Laying Chickens Infected With F-Strain Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Matthew Rex Burnham May 2002

Physiological Factors Associated With The Alteration Of Reproductive Performance Of Commercial Egg Laying Chickens Infected With F-Strain Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Matthew Rex Burnham

Theses and Dissertations

The F-strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (FMG) is commonly used in vaccination programs to displace infections by more virulent natural or wild type Mycoplasma gallisepticum strains. However, a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for altered egg production (EP) and egg quality in commercial layers infected with FMG is important, as these alterations can cause economic loss to the United States layer industry. This study was designed to examine potential mechanism(s) responsible for alterations in EP and egg quality by FMG-inoculation. The effects of FMG on production parameters and physiological characteristics of commercial laying hens were evaluated. In isolation units, 12 …
