The Effects Of Social Problem-Solving Training In An Inclusive Kindergarten Classroom, Kimberly R. Fontana May 2002

The Effects Of Social Problem-Solving Training In An Inclusive Kindergarten Classroom, Kimberly R. Fontana

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was for students with disabilities in an inclusive setting to improve socially from social problem solving training. An eight-week social problem-solving training program (SPS) was administered to twenty-three children. Three participants took part in this study. One child was classified as being emotionally disturbed and two other children were classified with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The behaviors observed were: positive social interaction, the ability to make friends, and attending behavior during big group, small group, and playtime. The teacher and teacher assistant observed the three participants using a baseline analysis. Results did exhibit a …

Genome-Wide Screening For Trait Conferring Genes Using Dna Microarrays, R. T. Gill, S. Wildt, Y. T. Yang, S. Ziesman, G. Stephanopoulos May 2002

Genome-Wide Screening For Trait Conferring Genes Using Dna Microarrays, R. T. Gill, S. Wildt, Y. T. Yang, S. Ziesman, G. Stephanopoulos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report a DNA microarray-based method for genome-wide monitoring of competitively grown transformants to identify genes whose overexpression confers a specific cellular phenotype. Whereas transcriptional profiling identifies differentially expressed genes that are correlated with particular aspects of the cellular phenotype, this functional genomics approach determines genes that result in a specific physiology. This parallel gene-trait mapping method consists of transforming a strain with a genomic library, enriching the cell population in transformants containing the trait conferring gene(s), and finally using DNA microarrays to simultaneously isolate and identify the enriched gene inserts. Various methods of enrichment can be used; here, genes …

A System For Emergency Care Ventilator Control, Brad Brian, Ken Johnson May 2002

A System For Emergency Care Ventilator Control, Brad Brian, Ken Johnson

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Closed-loop control of mechanical ventilators could have a positive impact on pre-hospital patient care. Several methods to achieve this goal have been researched. A current method entitled "Adaptive Volume ventilation" is being studied in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah Health Science Center. Preliminary clinical trials using the work of breathing model have shown that optimal settings for respiratory rate are significantly higher and optimal settings for tidal volume are significantly lower than those set by clinicians. Measured respiratory rate and tidal volumes were 9.7+/-1.4 bpm and 8.9+/-1.9 ml/kg, respectively. Optimal ventilator settings were calculated to be …

Studies Of Urea In Space, Ed Galindo, James Barta May 2002

Studies Of Urea In Space, Ed Galindo, James Barta

Utah Space Grant Consortium

This is a good story. This is a story about space flight. This is a story about schools, a Native American High School and a University. This is a story about students and doing great research. This is a story about people working together to make some amazing things happen. Things like friendships, courage, commitment and knowledge. This is a story about a science teacher working on an Indian reservation with some of the brightest stars I know, the students and staff of Shoshone-Bannock High school on the Fort Hall, Indian Reservation located in southeastern Idaho. And last, but certainly …

Pulmonary Metaphor Design And Anesthesia Simulation Testing, S. Blake Wachter, James Agutter, Noah D. Syroid, Frank A. Drews, Robert Albers, David Strayer, Dwayne R. Westenskow

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Medical decision making is a crucial process to successfully treat a critical medical emergency. During an unexpected medical event, astronauts, like anesthesiologists, must react quickly in a complex environment. Tools, such as the pulmonary metaphor display, were created to aid the medical caregiver's decision making process. The pulmonary metaphor display is designed to help the caregiver collect and integrate pulmonary data to provide a more accurate, quicker diagnosis and treatment. The following outline anesthesiology simulation study will provide the data to prove that the pulmonary metaphor display is beneficial to medical decision making.

Alaska Native Technical Assistance And Resource Center: Final Report, Lisa Rieger, Darryl S. Wood, Michael Jennings May 2002

Alaska Native Technical Assistance And Resource Center: Final Report, Lisa Rieger, Darryl S. Wood, Michael Jennings

Reports

Too often, federal and state justice programs directed at rural, predominately Alaska Native villages do not sufficiently coordinate planning and funding, and are not tailored to fit local cultures and needs. The language and institutional contexts of granting agencies and requests for proposals for grants frame justice problems and their solutions in ways that may or may not relate to the experiences of Alaska Native villages. The Alaska Native Technical Resource Center (ANTARC) was designed as a three-year project to improve village capacity to identify problems and educate the university and granting agencies about the nature of their justice problems …

Fibroblast Growth Factor–Specific Modulation Of Cellular Response By Syndecan-4, Arie Horowitz, Eugene Tkachenko, Michael Simons May 2002

Fibroblast Growth Factor–Specific Modulation Of Cellular Response By Syndecan-4, Arie Horowitz, Eugene Tkachenko, Michael Simons

Dartmouth Scholarship

Proteoglycans participate in growth factor interaction with the cell surface through their heparan sulfate chains (HS), but it is not known if they are otherwise involved in growth factor signaling. It appears now that the syndecan-4 core protein, a transmembrane proteoglycan shown previously to bind phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP(2)) and activate PKC alpha, participates in mediating the effects of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)2 on cell function. Mutations in the cytoplasmic tail of syndecan-4 that either reduced its affinity to PIP(2) (PIP(2)(-)) or disrupted its postsynaptic density 95, disk large, zona occludens-1 (PDZ)-dependent binding (PDZ(-)) produced a FGF2-specific dominant negative phenotype in …
