Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang Jun 2002

Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article recounts how a number of strategic infrastructure investment decisions in airport and rail development taken by the Singapore government were at variance with recommendations emerging from Cost-Benefit Analysis, but were considered necessary to support external competitiveness. This link between infrastructure provision and economic development may require decision makers to assess the trade-off between prudent macro-economic planning and efficient micro-economic management for major projects. In the case of airport hubs, the most difficult assessment might be the game consideration of how much, and how far ahead, excess capacity is needed to ensure the dominance of the hub.

A strong association exists between the presence of steatosis in a donor liver for transplantation and the development of primary nonfunction in the recipient. Despite this, appraisal of the donor remains one of the least scientific aspects of the transplantation process, and many centers base their practice on subjective opinion, rather than objective data. We conducted this survey to illuminate controversial issues and highlight the variation of opinion and practice policies both between and within the United Kingdom and the United States. A simple, anonymous, one-page, 10-question survey with tick-box answers was sent to every practicing liver transplant surgeon in …

A Group Theoretic Tabu Search Methodology For Solving The Theater Distribution Vehicle Routing And Scheduling Problem, John R. Crino Jun 2002

A Group Theoretic Tabu Search Methodology For Solving The Theater Distribution Vehicle Routing And Scheduling Problem, John R. Crino

Theses and Dissertations

The application of Group Theory to Tabu Search is a new and exciting field of research. This dissertation applies and extends some of Colletti's (1999) seminal work in group theory and metaheuristics in order to solve the theater distribution vehicle routing and scheduling problem (TDVRSP). This research produced a robust, efficient, effective and flexible generalized theater distribution model that prescribes the routing and scheduling of multi-modal theater transportation assets to provide economically efficient time definite delivery of cargo to customers. In doing so, advances are provided in the field of group theoretic tabu search and its application to difficult combinatorial …

Retrograde Transport Of Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy Within Descending Motor Tracts, Jason C. Bartz, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard A. Bessen Jun 2002

Retrograde Transport Of Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy Within Descending Motor Tracts, Jason C. Bartz, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard A. Bessen

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The spread of the abnormal conformation of the prion protein, PrPSc, within the spinal cord is central to the pathogenesis of transmissible prion diseases, but the mechanism of transport has not been determined. For this report, the route of transport of the HY strain of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME), a prion disease of mink, in the central nervous system following unilateral inoculation into the sciatic nerves of Syrian hamsters was investigated. PrPSc was detected at 3 weeks postinfection in the lumbar spinal cord and ascended to the brain at a rate of approximately 3.3 mm per day. …

Ethical Considerations In The Prevention And Management Of Genetic Disorders With Special Emphasis On Religious Considerations, Mohammed A. Albar Jun 2002

Ethical Considerations In The Prevention And Management Of Genetic Disorders With Special Emphasis On Religious Considerations, Mohammed A. Albar

Saudi Medical Journal

Genetic diseases include not only single gene disoders, but multifactorial, somatic cell genetic disorders, mitochondrial and even chromosomal. One in 4 adults will suffer from a multifactorial or a somatic cell genetic disease. The common diseases in the community have a hereditary component namely diabetes mellitus, hypertension, ischemic heart diseases and many types of cancer. Even monogenic diseases which affect a small number of the newborns (2%-3%), have a greater impact on childhood diseases up to age 15 years. Therefore, it is imperative to scrutinize the available methods of prevention and management of genetic disorders, their ethical implications, and since …

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

Part I of this paper introduces the topic. Part II examines Afghanistan's long history of unstable politics and civil war. The Taliban's rise to power will also be discussed. While this paper briefly addresses the recent fall of the Taliban and the impact of the ongoing United States actions against terrorism, women's status in Afghan society during Taliban rule as a potential basis for refugee status will be the focus of the historical analysis. The United States' law regarding refugees is based on the United Nations (UN) 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees definition. Part III explores how …

Flying And Fighting Confederate Flags, Kari Ward Karr Jun 2002

Flying And Fighting Confederate Flags, Kari Ward Karr

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

Until recently, South Carolina has flown the Confederate battle flag over the statehouse, now flown over a confederate monument a few yards away as a result of legislative compromise. In response to South Carolina\'s conduct, the NAACP has greeted visitors to South Carolina at interstate roadside information centers by peacefully picketing, leafleting, and informing them about the economic boycott of South Carolina. They have informed these traveling citizens of the interesting phenomenon of continued state flying of a symbol routinely exploited associated with racist messages by the Ku Klux Klan and European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO, led by David …

Palazzolo V. Rhode Island: Clarification And More Confusion On The Notice Issue, Jaime L. Dawes Jun 2002

Palazzolo V. Rhode Island: Clarification And More Confusion On The Notice Issue, Jaime L. Dawes

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

The United States Supreme Court recently decided a takings case that many hoped would provide much needed guidance regarding takings claims brought by those who acquire property with notice of existing or impending restrictions. Until the recent case of Palazzolo v. Rhode Island the Supreme Court had hardly addressed the so-called "notice issue" that has frequently arisen in state and lower federal courts. In the absence of definitive direction from the Supreme Court, lower courts treated preexisting limitations in different ways, many finding notice to defeat an otherwise potentially successful claim for just compensation.

Measuring The Lifetime Experience Of Domestic Violence: Application Of The Life History Calendar Method, Mieko Yoshihama, Kimberly Clum, Alexandra Crampton, Brenda Gillespie Jun 2002

Measuring The Lifetime Experience Of Domestic Violence: Application Of The Life History Calendar Method, Mieko Yoshihama, Kimberly Clum, Alexandra Crampton, Brenda Gillespie

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In the absence of a "gold standard," research on domestic violence relies primarily on self-report, the quality of which is known to decline as the length of the recall period increases. Eliciting valid and reliable self-report data is crucial to the development of prevention and intervention policies and services. Nevertheless, existing measures typically do not incorporate devices to facilitate respondents' recall of the lifetime experience of domestic violence. This article describes the application of the Life History Calendar (LHC) method (Freedman, Thornton, Camburn, Alwin, & Young-DeMarco, 1988) to increase a respondent's recall of domestic violence victimization over the lifecourse. The …

The histories of music therapy programs at colleges and universities in the United States have not been widely researched and documented. The purpose of this study was to examine the history of the music therapy program at Western Michigan University from its origin and development until 1980. Specifically, the author was interested in learning what conditions existed that were favorable to the creation of a music therapy program, the chronological progress of the music therapy program (including the individuals responsible for the program's inception and development), and development and changes in curricula that demonstrated responsiveness to music therapy practice and …

The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier Jun 2002

The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social exchange and evolutionary models of mate selection incorporate economic assumptions but have not considered a key distinction between necessities and luxuries. This distinction can clarify an apparent paradox: Status and attractiveness, though emphasized by many researchers, are not typically rated highly by research participants. Three studies supported the hypothesis that women and men first ensure sufficient levels of necessities in potential mates before considering many other characteristics rated as more important in prior surveys. In Studies 1 and 2, participants designed ideal long-term mates, purchasing various characteristics with 3 different budgets. Study 3 used a mate-screening paradigm and showed …

Weaning-To-First Service Interval: It’S Impact On Subsequent Reproductive Performance In Sows And Alternative Ways To Improve Mating Efficiency In Weaned Sows, Padet Tummaruk, Wichai Tantasuparuk, Mongkol Techakumphu, Annop Kunavongkrit Jun 2002

Weaning-To-First Service Interval: It’S Impact On Subsequent Reproductive Performance In Sows And Alternative Ways To Improve Mating Efficiency In Weaned Sows, Padet Tummaruk, Wichai Tantasuparuk, Mongkol Techakumphu, Annop Kunavongkrit

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of this paper is to review current knowledge on the relationship between weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI) in sows and subsequent reproductive performance, in order to optimize and improve mating efficiency. WSI is an important indicator of sows reproductive performance and is closely associated with subsequent fertility. Sows with a WSI of 4-5 days have a larger subsequent litter size, compared to those with a WSI of 7-10 days. Studies have demonstrated that the WSI influences the duration of oestrus, being shorter in sows with a longer WSI. In sows with a short duration of oestrous, the duration from the …

Maternal Factors Related To Parenting Young Children With Congenital Heart Disease, Lynn K. Carey, Bonnie C. Nicholson, Robert A. Fox Jun 2002

Maternal Factors Related To Parenting Young Children With Congenital Heart Disease, Lynn K. Carey, Bonnie C. Nicholson, Robert A. Fox

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to compare the early child-rearing practices between mothers of young children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and mothers of healthy children. In addition, maternal stress, parental developmental expectations, and the early behavioral and emotional development of their children were explored. Maccoby’s (1992) socialization theory emphasizing the reciprocal nature of mother-child interactions provided the framework for this study. Findings from quantitative self-report measures and videotaped parent-child interactions showed a remarkable similarity between mothers of children with CHD and mothers of healthy children. In contrast, qualitative data revealed important differences with mothers of CHD children reporting …

Mandible Cleft: Report Of A Case And Review Of The Literature, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Lucienne Ulbrich, Fabricio Togni

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Median cleft of the lower lip and associated structures is a relatively rare condition. We report the case of a patient with mandibular cleft. Unlike other reported cases of similar disorders, there was no cleft of the lower lip. The literature on median clefts of the lower lip and mandible is reviewed, and the etiology and treatment are discussed.
