Static And Dynamic Plantar Pressure In Diabetic Patients With Advanced Neuropathy, Wei-Li Hsi, Huei-Ming Chai, Ming-Chuan Lin, Chi-Lun Rau, Jin-Shin Lai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The purpose of the study was to reveal any abnormal distribution of the static and dynamic plantar pressure in the diabetic patients with advanced neuropathy. Sixteen diabetic patients with advanced neuropathy (Group N) and 16 diabetic patients without advanced neuropathy (Group D) were recruited. Advanced neuropathy was determined by inability to perceive the 5.07 Semmes-Weinstein monofilament at one or more sites in each foot. Static plantar pressure was measured during standing, and dynamic plantar pressure was measured during walking. Static plantar pressure was significantly higher (p<0.05) at the posterior part of bilateral central lateral metatarsal heads, while dynamic plantar pressure …

Takayasu's Arteritis Presenting As Ischemic Stroke--Case Report, B A. Khealani, S M. Baig
Section of Neurology
Takayasu’s Arteritis is a chronic, idiopathic, inflammatory disease that primarily affects large blood vessels such as aorta and its branches.1 Neurological symptoms occur in about 50% of cases but stroke occurs in about 10% of patients with Takayasu’s Arteritis2 . We report two such cases and emphasize the need for thorough evaluation of young patients with stroke to establish the underlying etiology.

Chinese Regulation Of Traditional Chinese Medicine In The Modern World: Can The Chinese Effectively Profit From One Of Their Most Valuable Cultural Resources?, Teresa Schroeder
Chinese Regulation Of Traditional Chinese Medicine In The Modern World: Can The Chinese Effectively Profit From One Of Their Most Valuable Cultural Resources?, Teresa Schroeder
Washington International Law Journal
The global demand for traditional Chinese medicine ("TCM") has exploded in the last thirty years. Demand for TCM products increased both domestically in the People's Republic of China ("PRC") and internationally. However, the stigma of "witch doctoring" associated with TCM remains. Several developed nations have established national and local regulation of TCM practitioners to protect their citizens from dangerous treatments. After almost forty years of virtually unregulated endorsement of TCM, China recently began its own standardization of TCM products and practice. The question must be asked, what inspired such a dramatic and rapid change in Chinese policy? The geyser of …

Ethical And Legal Issues In Singapore Biomedical Research, Taiwo A. Oriola
Washington International Law Journal
In 2000, Singapore established the national "Bioethics Advisory Committee" to examine the ethical, moral, social, and legal implications of life sciences and biotechnology. The Committee will examine numerous topics, including genetic discrimination, cloning, and stem cell research. The Committee is expected to release its frast set of recommendations concerning stem cell research in the first half of 2002. This paper proposes that leveraging Singapore into a world-class biomedical research center will entail synchronizing the relevant areas of its legal ethics infrastructure and culture with that of the major players in the global biotechnology industry. Conversely, adhering to prevailing local ethical …
Evolution Of Land Reform In Russia: The 2001 Land Code And Its Impact On The Commercial Real Estate Market And Direct Foreign Investment, Dana Tumenova
Washington International Law Journal
Russia unambiguously established private land ownership when it adopted the 2001 Land Code, which, although limited to urban and commercial land, clarifies the concept of land ownership in general and allows foreign ownership of those lands. The Land Code permits security interests in commercial and industrial land, which should further stimulate Russia's commercial real estate market, an important component of a functioning market economy. Perhaps the greatest strength of the new Land Code is its provision for foreign ownership, which allows foreign investors to conduct business according to the Western standards without being forced to engage in bribery or other …

Crossed Aphasia : Report Of Two Cases, Chih-Hsiang Ho, Fan-Fei Tseng, Liu-Ing Bih, Shu-Fen Tseng
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Crossed aphasia is defined as aphasia due to right hemisphere lesion in dextrals. It is a rare syndrome. It was reported first time in 1899, then it elicited much discussion and studies. Nowadays the pathophysiology of crossed aphasia is still unclear. According to the site of lesion and the characteristics of language, crossed aphasia can be divided into two types. Type I is ”mirror – image”, the features are similar to the left hemisphere lesions. Type II is ”anomalous”, the language features are different from the typical left hemisphere aphasia. The studies of this syndrome are very rare in our …

The Pitfall Of Low Back Pain - Psoas Abscess, Pei-Dery Sheu, Jue-Long Wang, Shwu-Fen Sun, Chiao-Wen Hwang, Kuen-Huang Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The clinical presentation of psoas abscess is variable and nonspecific. The triad of fever, flank pain, and limitation of hip movement, which is specific for psoas abscess, is present in only less than 30% of the cases. Therefore, delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, resulting in the high mortality and morbidity, is not uncommon. A primary psoas abscess has no obvious focus of infection. It is believed that hematogeneous spread occurs from an occult source, analogous to acute osteomyelitis. Hematoma due to trauma may be the pathogenesis. The most common pathogen is staphylococcus. Secondary psoas abscess is defined as occurring by direct …

Acute Urinary Retention Associated With Herpes Zoster : A Casereport, Jyh-Yuh Ke, Chia-Ying Chung, Fuk-Tan Tang, Ming-Che Chao, May-Kuan Wong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Urinary retention is an uncommon complication of herpes zoster infection. It may happen secondary to a neurogenic bladder when the sacral dorsal root ganglia are involved. As a result, painful vesicular eruptions spreading over sacral dermatomes, such as buttock and perineum, may develop. Bladder and/or bowel dysfunction may occur as well, including urinary retention, constipation, and/or incontinence. The herpes zoster lesions usually have an unilateral dermatomal distribution. A 55-year-male patient with herpes zoster infection involving bilateral S2-S4 dermatomes is demonstrated. Acute urinary retention occurred 2 days before skin vesicular eruptions. His urine analysis revealed normal finding. Urodynamic study was taken …

Prosthetic Fabrication Of Elbow Disarticulations: A Casereport, Wai-Keung Lee, Chien-Jung Wang, Tong-Chu Chen, Li-Ting Liu, Li-Chang Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Elbow disarticulation(ED) is very rare in upper limb amputation. Traditionally prosthetic fabrication of ED is fitted with a medial window on the socket for the bulbous distal residual limb to pass through. Afterwards, closing of the medial window is followed for suspension, which usually raises cosmetic concerns on the client's part. This casereport aims to introduce a double socket fabricating method to address the above-mentioned issue to promote the client's life quality and ADL independence.

Spinal Epidural Abscess As A Possible Complication Of Acupuncture: Report Of Two Cases, Yi-Hsi Hsieh, Chorng-Sonq Chou
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spinal epidural abscess is an uncommon disease, and is rarely reported as a complication of acupuncture. We present two cases of spinal epidural abscess which developed after acupuncture treatment. Case 1 was 61 years old male who suffered from progressive pain and weakness over right upper arm after cervical manipulation and acupuncture. He became qudriplegia with urine retention 6 days later. Cervical MRI showed C3-6 epidural abscess. After operation and antibiotics treatment, he recovered to qudriparesis and could walk with the spastic gait 9 months later. Case 2 was 60 years old female who suffered from fever and right upper …
Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas
Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The foundations of human inequality lie in the fact of human diversity, or in the human tendency to differentiate from some while associating with others to form groups. The diversity which results from association and differentiation makes equality unattainable. Diversity and equality are incompatible, and attempts to promote one can only be made at the expense of the other. In these circumstances, we should abandon the ideal of equality as incapable of offering us an adequate understanding of the nature of the good society.

Whose Duty Is It Anyway?: The Kennedy Krieger Opinion And Its Implications For Public Health Research, Diane E. Hoffmann, Karen H. Rothenberg
Faculty Scholarship
In this article, the authors discuss the Maryland Court of Appeals decision in the case of Grimes v. Kennedy Krieger Institute, Inc. and its implications for the tort duty owed by researchers, in particular public health researchers, to their subjects. The Opinion resulted from two lawsuits alleging lead poisoning of children enrolled in a study conducted by the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a world renown pediatric research and treatment facility. The opinion shocked the research establishment with its scathing characterization of researchers and its apparent holding that in Maryland a parent cannot consent to the participation of a child in "nontherapeutic …
