Homeowners And Their Choice Of Information Sources About Gardening, Susan M. Varlamoff, Wojciech J. Florkowski, Joyce G. Latimer, S Kristine Braman

Journal of Extension

The Georgia Cooperative Extension Service increases its involvement in educating homeowners in fertilizer and pesticide use to reduce nonpoint source pollution from residential landscapes. A survey of homeowners revealed their current and preferred sources of gardening information. By dividing information sources according to the degree of their accessibility and cost, we determined the differences in the use of various sources according to homeowner gender, age, and education. Females, young homeowners, and those with a high level of education used and preferred more information sources. The Georgia Cooperative Extension Service will use a combination of sources to effectively disseminate best management …

Bridging The Generation Gap Across The Digital Divide: Teens Teaching Internet Skills To Senior Citizens

Journal of Extension

With the intent of closing the digital divide, the Teens Teaching Internet Skills Pilot Project engaged youth from 4-H Technology Teams in six states in training senior citizens to navigate and obtain information from the Medicare Web site. The teens perceived an improvement in working with seniors, project management, teaching, public speaking, and leadership. The workshops had a positive effect on seniors' comfort and skill levels towards technology. This intergenerational experience in leadership and technology training provided learning and skill development for both groups and led to positive changes in attitudes towards the other generation.

Choice Dilemmas And Risk Management Education, George F. Patrick, Wesley N. Musser Jun 2002

Choice Dilemmas And Risk Management Education, George F. Patrick, Wesley N. Musser

Journal of Extension

Differences in attitudes toward risk may result in individuals making different, yet correct, decisions. This article illustrates how choice dilemmas, hypothetical life decision situations, can be used in Extension workshops to help individuals identify their own willingness to assume risk and demonstrate differences among individuals. The agriculturally adapted choice dilemmas also illustrate fundamental risk-return trade-offs and the diversity of risks faced by producers. The willingness to assume risk scale is useful in assisting producers to understand their own risk attitudes and provides a means of incorporating risk attitudes into risk management education programs.

Use Of Instructional Rubrics In Cooperative Extension Programming, Ed Maxa, Carol Schwab, Mike Yoder

Journal of Extension

This article looks at the concept of the instructional rubric as a nonformal evaluation tool. The premise is that educators can obtain evaluation information on short-term programs where formal evaluation design is not desired. Examples of instructional rubrics are given for 4-H, agriculture, and family and consumer science. In addition to the rubric itself, there are implications for educator intervention and retooling the experience.

Brown Bag Lunch Programs: Another Avenue To Access?, Michael Johnson

Journal of Extension

Finding ways to "get the word out" is always a challenge for Extension. Developing brown bag lunch programs is a way to reach a new Extension audience. Determining how best to do this in each community can give the Extension educator an opportunity to provide another resource and more opportunities for programming, teaching, and educating. Brown bag lunch programs have been a success for our office in that we have had an audience for all the sessions, and, most important, we have seen new faces, people new to Extension who are becoming more involved with us and our programs.

Perils Of Temptation: Has The Eighth Circuit Given Employers An Incentive To Exploit Employees, The, Hadi S. Al-Shathir

Missouri Law Review

The use of arbitration agreements by employers as an alternative to litigation has inflamed the passions of many in the legal community for the past decade. While some champion the use of arbitration as a relatively inexpensive and efficient alternative to litigation, others view the use of arbitration agreements as a tool of corporate exploitation. This Note examines a recent a growing debate within the world of arbitration that is controversial and has important policy implications. Specifically, the debate centers around what a court should do with an illegal clause within a binding arbitration agreement: sever it from the agreement …

Are All Contracts Of Employment Exempt From The Provisions Of The Federal Arbitration Act - The Supreme Court Settles The Matter, B. Matthew Struble

Missouri Law Review

Congress enacted the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”) in 1925 to reverse the longstanding hostility of courts toward agreements to arbitrate and to make such agreements specifically enforceable. Section 1 of the FAA exempts the employment contracts of “seamen, railroad employees, or any other class of workers engaged in foreign or interstate commerce” from the Act’s coverage. The breadth of that exemption has been an issue with the courts of appeals for the past six decades, with the overwhelming majority of courts holding that Section 1 exempts only the contracts of employment of transportation workers form the FAA. In Craft v. …

And The Winner Is ... Trial Lawyers: When Does An Accommodation Under Title Ii Of The Ada Represent A Fundamental Alteration Of Competitive Sports, James B. York

Missouri Law Review

Prior to the United State Supreme Court’s decision in PGA Tour, Inc. v. Martin, fans could rest comfortably knowing that their games would stay true to the traditions they hold dear. After the decision, however, it appears that no rule, no matter how well established, is safe from a judicial determination that the rule is not fundamental and, thus, may be altered to accommodate individuals with disabilities. In PGA Tour, the Supreme Court forever changed when a proposed modification in competitive sports will be denied based on the fundamental alteration defense under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to compare the early child-rearing practices between mothers of young children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and mothers of healthy children. In addition, maternal stress, parental developmental expectations, and the early behavioral and emotional development of their children were explored. Maccoby’s (1992) socialization theory emphasizing the reciprocal nature of mother-child interactions provided the framework for this study. Findings from quantitative self-report measures and videotaped parent-child interactions showed a remarkable similarity between mothers of children with CHD and mothers of healthy children. In contrast, qualitative data revealed important differences with mothers of CHD children reporting …

Synthesis Of Cyclopropanes Via Organoiron Methodology: Stereoselective Preparation Of Cis-2-(2’-Carboxycyclopropyl)Glycine, Nathaniel J Wallock, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A stereoselective route to cis-2-(2′-carboxycyclopropyl)glycine has been developed. exo-Nucleophilic addition to the (bicyclo[5.1.0]octadienyl)iron(1+) cation establishes the relative stereochemistry at the cyclopropane ring and the α-stereocenter. Subsequent removal of the metal and cleavage of the cyclic diene gave the protected target 10, which upon hydrolysis gave 1.

Sin, Sickness, And Salvation From Nazareth To Lake Woebegone, David Schoessow May 2002

Sin, Sickness, And Salvation From Nazareth To Lake Woebegone, David Schoessow

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

Ours is the ministry of bringing the prayers of the saints to God on behalf of the afflicted. Ours is the ministry of bringing to the afflicted God's healing gifts of absolution and Holy Communion. Our culture of death has little respect or appreciation for claims that such 'common medicines' bestow wholeness and life. So be it, we could expect little else. Let us not doubt the efficacy of these divine gifts in the lives of His people.

Two-Dimensional Reflectivity Polarization Elastometry Imaging Techniques (Piet) Of Soft Tissue, Hee Chuan Lim May 2002

Two-Dimensional Reflectivity Polarization Elastometry Imaging Techniques (Piet) Of Soft Tissue, Hee Chuan Lim

Dissertations

A non-invasive polarized light reflection measurement method to measure the stretch of soft tissue, such as skin, is described. The technique utilizes changes in the reflectivity of polarized light intensity as a monitor of skin stretch. Measurements on in-vitro pigskin and invivo human skin show that the reflectivity of polarized light intensity increases linearly with stretch over a range. The changes in diffusive reflectivity properties of skin result from the alterations that take place in the roughness across the thickness of the skin layers due to stretch. Conceptually, as the roughness of a layer decreases with stretch, a smoother reflecting …

An Analysis Of Field Data For Evidence Of Anaerobic Degradation Of Pah And Btex Plumes At Manufactured Gas Plant Sites, Georgene Mortimer May 2002

An Analysis Of Field Data For Evidence Of Anaerobic Degradation Of Pah And Btex Plumes At Manufactured Gas Plant Sites, Georgene Mortimer

Dissertations

Field data (including geology, hydrogeology, soil chemistry, groundwater chemistry, and aquifer characteristics) were analyzed at eight MGP sites located in the New Jersey Coastal Plain. These data were used to calculate biodegradation rate constants, which were then compared with laboratory microcosm data and published values. Isopleths were drawn from the field data to indicate the dominant biodegradation mechanisms at each of the sites, and stoichiometric calculations were used to determine the total capacity of the electron acceptors present to degrade the plume contaminants. In examining these data, the protocol described by the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) was …
