Role Of Signal-Averaged Ecg In Predicting Results Of Flecainide Provocation Test Used In Family Screening For Brugada Syndrome, Ngai-Shing Mok, Chi-Chung Choy, Ngai-Yin Chan, Amy Ho Jul 2002

Role Of Signal-Averaged Ecg In Predicting Results Of Flecainide Provocation Test Used In Family Screening For Brugada Syndrome, Ngai-Shing Mok, Chi-Chung Choy, Ngai-Yin Chan, Amy Ho

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Brugada syndrome (BS) is an inherited arrhythmogenic disease with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Flecainide provocation test (FPT) has been shown to be highly sensitive and specific in unmasking the Brugada ECG pattern in affected subjects. We sought to test if late potential (LP) in signal averaged electrocardiogram (SAECG) is helpful in predicting the results of FPT used in family screening for BS. The study included 17 asymptomatic Chinese subjects from 8 families (M:F 10:7, mean age 24.8±11.4 years) who have undergone family screening for BS. All screened subjects had a normal 12-lead ECG at baseline. None had structural …

Jails Not Homes: Quality Of Life On The Streets Of San Francisco, Maya Nordberg Jul 2002

Jails Not Homes: Quality Of Life On The Streets Of San Francisco, Maya Nordberg

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Quality-of-life ordinances criminalize visible acts associated with the status of homelessness. Quality-of-life enforcement removes perceived "others" from our communities, building on historical precedent that punished homelessness and pauperism with fines, workhouses and imprisonment. San Francisco's recent experiment in increased enforcement of these ordinances involved coercing individuals onto waitlists for social services under the threat of prosecution without legal representation. Through displacement from streets to jails, criminalization may temporarily serve to lessen the visibility of homelessness. But the process of charging police departments and court systems with the responsibility of solving this social policy dilemma leads to burgeoning social and economic …

In-Home Prenatal Nutrition Intervention Increased Dietary Iron Intakes And Reduced Low Birthweight In Low-Income African-American Women, Chiquita Briley, Nicole L. Flanagan, Nancy M. Lewis Jul 2002

In-Home Prenatal Nutrition Intervention Increased Dietary Iron Intakes And Reduced Low Birthweight In Low-Income African-American Women, Chiquita Briley, Nicole L. Flanagan, Nancy M. Lewis

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Low birthweight (LBW), defined as an infant weighing less than 2,500 grams (1), is a major determinant of infant mortality and contributes to infant and childhood morbidity and increased healthcare costs (2-4). LBW occurs due to preterm delivery (length of gestation less than 37 weeks), growth retardation, or both (2). In the United States, higher rates of LBW occur in urban areas with high concentrations of low-income ethnic minorities (5). Results of the 1997 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance indicate that the rate of LBW in the United States was 13% for African-American infants, and 8% for whites (6). Healthy People 2010 …

Interracial Couples Experience Of Leisure: A Social Network Approach, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D. Jul 2002

Interracial Couples Experience Of Leisure: A Social Network Approach, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D.

School of Continuing and Professional Studies Faculty and Staff Works

There has been a significant amount of research that has indicated divergent

patterns of leisure participation among African Americans and European Americans;however, there has been a paucity of research that addresses the leisure patterns of interracial couples and families. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the leisure patterns of interracial couples and families, specifically African American and European American couples. A qualitative design was employed to gather in-depth interview data from six couples. The findings indicated that the interracial couples felt socially isolated in various aspects of daily life, including work, family, and leisure. The primary cause …

Terrorism And Insurance Markets: A Role For The Government As Insurer?, Alan O. Sykes, Anne Gron Jul 2002

Terrorism And Insurance Markets: A Role For The Government As Insurer?, Alan O. Sykes, Anne Gron

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Since September 11, 2001, insurance markets have been struggling to adjust to new information about the magnitude of risks posed by terrorism, and to the loss of tens of billions of dollars in reserves because of claims relating to the September 11 attacks. Insurance coverage for terror-related losses has become more expensive and for some risks difficult or impossible to obtain. As a result, various interest groups have called for the Federal government to provide coverage for terrorism losses, and proposals for increased government involvement are moving forward in Washington. We question the wisdom of any further measures of this …

To Sever Or To Destroy: The Eighth Circuit Allows Invalid Provisions To Be Served From Otherwise Enforceable Arbitration Agreements, Michael K. Daming

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA") allows for arbitration to be a medium by which parties may settle disputes more expeditiously than litigation. The FAA declares specifically that written agreements to resolve disputes through arbitration are "valid, irrevocable, and enforceable, save upon such grounds as exist at law or in equity for the revocation of any contract.,' 2

Effects Of Sleep Duration, Sleep Quality, And Time Of Day On Executive Function Performance In Children, Judy T. Klaus

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Executive functions are the cognitive abilities that include self-regulation, inhibition of responding, planning, and mental flexibility. Previous studies on executive functions I I have focused on people with ADHD and other impairments. Studies on sleep and cognitive function abilities have focused on the effects of lack of sleep and the ability to perform executive function tasks. This study examined the cognitive abilities of children with no impairment in relationship to Time of Day, Sleep Duration and Sleep Quality.

Thirty children ranging from age 7 to age 12 were recruited from the area. A self-report questionnaire on typical Sleep Duration and …

Ballot Ballet: The Metroscape’S Delicate Dance With Direct Democracy, David Santen Jul 2002

Ballot Ballet: The Metroscape’S Delicate Dance With Direct Democracy, David Santen

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

Referred to as the “fourth branch” of the Oregon political system, the ballot initiative process has defined Oregon politics as much if not more than any of the traditional legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. After a century on the books, it continues to grow in stature and presence, evidenced from the increased bulk of both the Voters' Pamphlet and the Oregon Constitution itself. It tackles the entire spectrum of issues, affecting residents of Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill Counties, and often spilling over into Clark County, Washington, and beyond. Land use and property rights, structure of the …

Identification Of The Vibrio Cholerae Enterobactin Receptors Vcta And Irga: Irga Is Not Required For Virulence, Alexandra R. Mey, Elizabeth E. Wyckoff, Amanda G. Oglesby, Eva Rab, Ronald K. Taylor, Shelley M. Payne Jul 2002

Identification Of The Vibrio Cholerae Enterobactin Receptors Vcta And Irga: Irga Is Not Required For Virulence, Alexandra R. Mey, Elizabeth E. Wyckoff, Amanda G. Oglesby, Eva Rab, Ronald K. Taylor, Shelley M. Payne

Dartmouth Scholarship

The gram-negative enteric pathogen Vibrio cholerae requires iron for growth. V. cholerae has multiple iron acquisition systems, including utilization of heme and hemoglobin, synthesis and transport of the catechol siderophore vibriobactin, and transport of several siderophores that it does not itself make. One siderophore that V. cholerae transports, but does not make, is enterobactin. Enterobactin transport requires TonB and is independent of the vibriobactin receptor ViuA. In this study, two candidate enterobactin receptor genes, irgA (VC0475) and vctA (VCA0232), were identified by analysis of the V. cholerae genomic sequence. A single mutation in either of these genes did not significantly …

The Path Ahead: Future Enrollments In Portland Public Schools, 2001-2010, Based On October 2001 Enrollments, Portland State University. Population Research Center

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

This report provides a school Enrollment Forecast, including demographic information, for Portland Public Schools. The report considers several factors that are likely to affect the school district's enrollments between the present and 2010, including the future number of births, net migrants, and the proportion of school-age children and youth enrolled in the public schools. This is the third annual report that forecasts future enrollments for the Portland Public Schools. Previous annual reports were based on October 1999 and October 2000 enrollments; this report relies on October 2001 enrollments. To take into account a variety of demographic and enrollment possibilities, this …

Towards A Better Mine Action Programme: Master Of Science Dissertation, Tim Lardner

Global CWD Repository

This dissertation sets out to assess how the global community has dealt with landmines and the damage they are having on the population. The study analyses the development of two programmes in particular in Cambodia and Mozambique - and then considers the influences that culture and organisational structure have on those organisations. Taking these lessons, the study analyses the best methods of implementation and recommends a number of areas worthy of consideration in the development of future mine action organisations.

Kinship Care In Massachusetts, Jan Mutchler, Alison S. Gottlieb, Lona Choi, Ellen A. Bruce Jul 2002

Kinship Care In Massachusetts, Jan Mutchler, Alison S. Gottlieb, Lona Choi, Ellen A. Bruce

Gerontology Institute Publications

The population of kinship care families in the Commonwealth is diverse in its characteristics, resources, and needs. The often-referenced stereotype of the elderly single grandmother caring for a number of grandchildren holds for only a portion of the kinship care families. Many children are cared for by married couples; many of the grandparents are not elderly; and many of the caregivers are not grandparents, but rather aunts, uncles, grown siblings, or other relatives. Although the duration of the caregiving relationship is unknown for non-grandparental care, most of the grandparent caregivers are involved in long-term caregiving. As such, their needs are …

The Effects Of Temporary Services And Contracting Out On Low-Skilled Workers: Evidence From Auto Suppliers, Hospitals, And Public Schools, George A. Erickcek, Susan N. Houseman, Arne L. Kalleberg Jul 2002

The Effects Of Temporary Services And Contracting Out On Low-Skilled Workers: Evidence From Auto Suppliers, Hospitals, And Public Schools, George A. Erickcek, Susan N. Houseman, Arne L. Kalleberg

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We examine why employers use temporary agency and contract company workers and the implications of these practices for the wages, benefits, and working conditions of workers in low-skilled labor markets. Through intensive case studies in manufacturing (automotive supply), services (hospitals), and public sector (primary and secondary schools) industries, we define the circumstances under which these workers are likely to be adversely affected, minimally affected, or even benefited by such outsourcing. Adverse effects on compensation are clearest when companies substitute agency temporaries or contract company workers for regular employees on a long-term basis because low-skilled workers within the organization receive relatively …

Design And Construction Of Interior Duct Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Janet Mcilvaine Jul 2002

Design And Construction Of Interior Duct Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Janet Mcilvaine

FSEC Energy Research Center®

To combat the energy, durability, and indoor air quality penalties of duct leakage, energy experts have recommended putting the duct system and air handler inside the conditioned space. Two paths of accomplishing this have emerged: unvented attics/crawl spaces and interior chases. This study focuses on the design, construction, and performance of the interior chase approach as implemented by five different builders in Texas, North Carolina, and Florida.

Researchers found that, in many cases, breeches of the air barrier were evident from simple visual inspection. Critical points of design and construction were identified and will be presented through photos, design and …
