Bad And Not-So-Bad Arguments For Shareholder Primacy, Lynn A. Stout Jul 2002

Bad And Not-So-Bad Arguments For Shareholder Primacy, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In 1932, the Harvard Law Review published a debate between two preeminent corporate scholars on the subject of the proper purpose of the public corporation. On one side stood the renowned Adolph A. Berle, coauthor of the classic The Modern Corporation and Private Property. Berle argued for what is now called "shareholder primacy"—the view that the corporation exists only to make money for its shareholders. According to Berle, "all powers granted to a corporation or to the management of a corporation, or to any group within the corporation. . . [are] at all times exercisable only for the ratable …

Investigation Of Port Fuel Injector Spray Mass Distribution By Laser Induced Fluorescence, Tuba Bayraktar Jul 2002

Investigation Of Port Fuel Injector Spray Mass Distribution By Laser Induced Fluorescence, Tuba Bayraktar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modern internal combustion engines have stringent requirements for performance and reduced toxic emissions. The fuel delivery system, and particularly the fuel injectors, have a vital role in reducing unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) in exhaust emission.

The main goal of this study is to map the spatial and temporal distribution of the spray from a low-pressure gasoline fuel injector. To attain this goal, three tasks were performed: (1) the experimental investigation of the spray oscillation as functions of operating pressure and injector timing, (2) the determination of the appropriate dye/fuel combinations for one particular experimental technique, and (3) …

Judicializing Politics, Politicizing Law, John Ferejohn Jul 2002

Judicializing Politics, Politicizing Law, John Ferejohn

Law and Contemporary Problems

Since WWII there has been a profound shift in power away from legislatures and toward courts and other legal institutions around the world. It is no surprise that appointments to both the US Supreme Court and to other federal courts have become partisan political issues. Ferejohn argues that what is at stake, institutionally, is the allocation of legislative power--the power to establish general rules of prospective application.

Deliberative Democracy’S Attempt To Turn Politics Into Law, Christopher H. Schroeder Jul 2002

Deliberative Democracy’S Attempt To Turn Politics Into Law, Christopher H. Schroeder

Law and Contemporary Problems

Deliberative democracy is one of the most discussed contemporary political theories. Schroeder argues that its central claim can be understood as the claim that politics needs to become more like law. While specific recommendations to make specific decision processes more deliberative are fair, the attempt to efface the distinctively non-lawlike attributes of politics entirely cannot withstand scrutiny.

A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Disrupts The Latency Reactivation Cycle In Calves, Melissa Inman, Luciane Lovato, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle, and infection is usually initiated via the ocular or nasal cavity. Following acute infection, the primary site for BHV-1 latency is the sensory neuron. Reactivation from latency occurs sporadically, resulting in virus shedding and transmission to uninfected cattle. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, suggesting that it mediates some aspect of latency. An LR mutant was constructed by inserting three stop codons near the beginning of the LR-RNA, suggesting that expression of LR proteins would be altered. The LR mutant grew with wild-type …

Salt Losing Nephropathy Simulating Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia In An Infant, Jameela A. Kari, Hussain A. Bamashmous, Abdulmoein E. Al-Agha, Hisham A. Mosli Jul 2002

Salt Losing Nephropathy Simulating Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia In An Infant, Jameela A. Kari, Hussain A. Bamashmous, Abdulmoein E. Al-Agha, Hisham A. Mosli

Saudi Medical Journal

Pseudo-hypoaldosteronism occurring predominately in male infants has been reported in association with a spectrum of urologic diseases including obstructive uropathy. This is thought to reflect tubule unresponsiveness to aldosterone. We report a case, which was misdiagnosed as a case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and treated inappropriately with hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone for 12-months before he had a urinary tract infection and was discovered to have obstructive uropathy on ultrasound. He presented with vomiting, dehydration, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia and metabolic acidosis. His initial 17 hydroxyprogestrone was high. His electrolytes improved to normal after relieving the obstruction by vesicostomy and his treatment weaned slowly …

Spontaneous Rupture Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Faisal M. Al-Mashat, Abdulrahman M. Sibiany, Rashid H. Kashgari, Abdulraouf A. Maimani, Asim O. Al-Radi, Ibrahim A. Balawy

Saudi Medical Journal

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common malignancy among males and the 7th among female patients in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is due to the endemicity of hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma is rare. We report 4 cases of spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma. Initial control of bleeding was achieved surgically in 3 patients and by embolization in the 4th patient. All patients had very good hepatic reserve as reflected by Child-Pough scoring (A & B). We found that the incidence of ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma among 85 patients was 4.7%. The prognosis of this …

Income Tax Planning For Long-Term Care, David M. English Jul 2002

Income Tax Planning For Long-Term Care, David M. English

Faculty Publications

Planning for long-term involves more than the preparation of powers of attorney and counseling on possible asset transfers to qualify for Medicaid reimbursement. Steps should also be taken to make certain that the person receiving care continues to file an income tax return and does so at a minimum possible income tax cost. Practitioners should be familiar with the procedure for filing a return on behalf of an incapacitated individual. The medical expense deduction, while of little importance for most taxpayers, is critical for many elderly, particularly for those receiving long-term care. Long-term care insurance and life insurance may be …
