Identity Theory, Stephan Desrochers, Jeanine K. Andreassi, Cynthia A. Thompson Aug 2002

Identity Theory, Stephan Desrochers, Jeanine K. Andreassi, Cynthia A. Thompson

WCBT Faculty Publications

Basic Concepts & Definitions:

Identity theory is a microsociological theory, which links self attitudes, or identities, to the role relationships and role-related behavior of individuals. Identity theorists argue that the self consists of a collection of identities, each of which is based on occupying a particular role (Stryker, 1968; Stryker & Burke, 2000). Identities can be defined as one's answers to the question 'Who am I?" (Stryker & Serpe, 1982). Many of the "answers" (e.g., "I am a father") are linked to the roles we occupy, so they are often referred to as "role identities" or simply, "identities." For example, …

A Small-Satellite Demonstrator For Generating Artificial Gravity In Space Via A Tethered System, Andre Mazzoleni, John Hoffman Aug 2002

A Small-Satellite Demonstrator For Generating Artificial Gravity In Space Via A Tethered System, Andre Mazzoleni, John Hoffman

Small Satellite Conference

It is well-known that prolonged exposure in humans to a microgravity environment leads to significant loss of bone and muscle mass; this presents a formidable obstacle to human exploration of space, particularly for missions requiring travel times of several months or more, such as a 6 to 9mon th trip to Mars. Artificial gravity may be produced by spinning a spacecraft about its center of mass, but since the g– force generated by rotation is equal to “omega-squared times r” (where omega is its angular velocity and r is the distance from the center of rotation), we have that unless …

Preliminary Design Of A High Performance Solar Sailing Mission, Dan Cohen, Paul Gloyer, James Rogan

Small Satellite Conference

The Team Encounter participants, Team Encounter, LLC, AeroAstro Inc., and L’Garde, Inc. have recently completed the preliminary design of the Team Encounter spacecraft, Humanity's First Starship™. The spacecraft, intended to be launched as a secondary payload on an Ariane 5 launcher in the first or second quarter of 2004, consists of two parts: the Carrier, which transports the Sailcraft beyond Earth’s gravity well and the Sailcraft which transports its payload of 3 kg out of the solar system. The Carrier must provide a stable platform for deployment and separation of the 4900 m2 solar sail, and will provide for video …

Ffdem: Demonstrating Formation Flying With Small Spacecraft, Luís Gomes, Martin Sweeting, Theresa Beech, Guillermo Ortega Aug 2002

Ffdem: Demonstrating Formation Flying With Small Spacecraft, Luís Gomes, Martin Sweeting, Theresa Beech, Guillermo Ortega

Small Satellite Conference

Several missions are currently proposed that require very close formation flying. Missions such as IRSI -Darwin and Xeus will require the development of new techniques and equipment to achieve the stringent performances required. Both these missions will be preceded by demonstration missions, aimed at validating concepts of formation flying and generating a European capability in this field. These precursor mis sions will very much be standard missions, using a classical “large project” approach. This has lead ESA to consider the procurement of an innovative mission, which would demonstrate some aspects of Formation Flying, using microsatellite class spacecraft, with a mass …

The Inertial Stellar Compass: A New Direction In Spacecraft Attitude Determination , T. Brady, C. Tillier, R. Brown, A. Jimenez, A. Kourepenis

Small Satellite Conference

The Inertial Stellar Compass (ISC) is a real-time, miniature, low power stellar inertial attitude determination system, composed of a wide field-of-view active pixel star camera and a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyro assembly, with associated processing and power electronics. The integrated technologies enable an attitude determination system with an accuracy of 0.1 degree (1 sigma) to be realized at very low power and volume. The attitude knowledge provided by the ISC is applicable to a wide range of space and earth science missions that may include the use of highly maneuverable, stabilized, tumbling, or lost spacecraft. Under the guidance of NASA’s …

Estimation Of The Bivariate Survival Function With Generalized Bivariate Right Censored Data Structures, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, James M. Robins Aug 2002

Estimation Of The Bivariate Survival Function With Generalized Bivariate Right Censored Data Structures, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, James M. Robins

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We propose a bivariate survival function estimator for a general right censored data structure that includes a time dependent covariate process. Firstly, an initial estimator that generalizes Dabrowska's (1988) estimator is introduced. We obtain this estimator by a general methodology of constructing estimating functions in censored data models. The initial estimator is guaranteed to improve on Dabrowska's estimator and remains consistent and asymptotically linear under informative censoring schemes if the censoring mechanism is estimated consistently. We then construct an orthogonalized estimating function which results in a more robust and efficient estimator than our initial estimator. A simulation study demonstrates the …

The Icarus Student Satellite - A Fully Autonomous Student Built Small Satellite For Nasa, Hannah Goldberg, Bt Cesul, Brian Gilchrist

Small Satellite Conference

University of Michigan students, with the mentoring support of engineers from NASA, Michigan, and elsewhere, have developed a small endmass satellite—dubbed Icarus—for NASA’s ProSEDS (Propulsive Small Expendable Deployer System) electrodynamic-tether propulsion mission. The ProSEDS experiment will be launched in late 2002 as a secondary payload attached to the second stage of a Delta–II launch vehicle. Following the completion of the Delta–II primary mission, the second stage will initiate a series of burns to place ProSEDS into a 360-km, near-circular orbit at an inclination of 35°. The Icarus endmass satellite will be cast off from the Delta–II second stage and be …

The N-Acetyltransferase Rimj Responds To Environmental Stimuli To Repress Pap Fimbrial Transcription In Escherichia Coli, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Alia M. Black, Stacie H. Eliades, Sarah Young, Kimberly Porter Aug 2002

The N-Acetyltransferase Rimj Responds To Environmental Stimuli To Repress Pap Fimbrial Transcription In Escherichia Coli, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Alia M. Black, Stacie H. Eliades, Sarah Young, Kimberly Porter

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In uropathogenic Escherichia coli, P pili (Pap) facilitate binding to host epithelial cells and subsequent colonization. Whereas P pili can be produced at 37°C, the expression of these fimbriae is suppressed at 23°C. Previously, insertion mutations in rimJ, a gene encoding the N-terminal acetyltransferase of ribosomal protein S5, were shown to disrupt this thermoregulatory response, allowing papBA transcription at low temperature. In this study, we created an in-frame deletion of rimJ. This deletion relieved the repressive effects not only of low temperature but also of rich (Luria-Bertani [LB]) medium and glucose on papBA transcription, indicating that RimJ modulates papBA transcription …
