Environmental Education And Understanding: The Case For Elementary Students In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2002, Clara Householder
Environmental Education And Understanding: The Case For Elementary Students In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2002, Clara Householder
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Education is the key to preserving biodiversity throughout the world. Not just education, but the environment in which the education takes place. In an attempt to compare the effectiveness of the environmental education program, I surveyed the 5th and 6th grade students at four of the area schools in Monteverde, Costa Rica. I also talked to the teachers about the curriculum and made visual observations of the classroom settings. I found that the Monteverde Friends School, Quaker school, and Creative Learning Center, environmental education school, had better scores than the public or Adventist schools, but that their demographics were very …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Hydroxyapatite-Collagen Biocomposite Materials, Vuk Uskoković, Nenad Ignjatović, Nadejda Petranović
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Hydroxyapatite-collagen composite is a prosperous biomaterial in reconstructive surgery for the reparation of defects within human hard tissue. Within this research, three-dimensional blocks of HAp/collagen composite biomaterial were synthesized by homogenizing the HAp/collagen mixture by cold and hot (T=60oC) pressing (P=49 MPa). The changes in the system were followed by using thermal analysis (DSC & TGA), FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The identification and kinetic analysis of appearing phase transition were done. FT-IR spectrum of the biocomposite shows that neither cold nor hot pressing had significant influence on the individual components of the composite. SEM of the fracture …

Designing Policies That Address The Relationship Between Woman Abuse And Economic Resources, Kameri Christy-Mcmullin
Designing Policies That Address The Relationship Between Woman Abuse And Economic Resources, Kameri Christy-Mcmullin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Given the disproportionate and increasing number of impoverished women, and poor women's increased vulnerability to woman abuse, it is crucial we examine economic policies in regards to their equity and adequacy for abused women. Current policies and programs designed to address the economic resources/needs of abused women are analyzed. Limitations in current policies are addressed, and a recommendation is made for the formation and implementation of a policy that would serve to empower women economically. Both the prospect and achievement of economic independence for women may not only reduce woman abuse, but will also increase women's options for economic security.

Peritoneal and pleural cavities in mice and humans contain a unique population of B-lymphocytes called B-1 cells that are defective in B cell antigen receptor (BCR) signaling but have an increased propensity to produce autoantibodies. Several molecules such as Btk, Vav, and CD19 known to be important for BCR signaling have been shown to be critical for the development of B-1 cells from undefined precursors. Here we demonstrate that B-1 cell unresponsiveness to BCR cross-linking is in part due to defective signaling through CD19, a molecule known to modulate signaling thresholds in B cells. The defective CD19 signaling is manifested …
A Strategy For Development (2001) World Bank Annual Conference On Development Economics Review, F.O. Odoko
A Strategy For Development (2001) World Bank Annual Conference On Development Economics Review, F.O. Odoko
Economic and Financial Review
This is a review of “A Strategy for Development†presented by Nicholas Stern at the World Bank Annual Conference on Development Economics in 2001. Stern, details a strategy for development that draws on several perspectives. He puts forward two pillars as the basis for this strategy: building an investment climate that facilitates investment and growth and empowering poor people to participate in that growth. He surmises that both elements are crucial for fighting poverty. This is an important contribution to the debate on development and brings to it refreshing insights into what must be done to accelerate development.

Research Notes: Marijuana Use Among High-School Students In Guam, Thomas K. Pinhey, John W. Carpenter Jr., Michael P. Perez, Randall L. Workman
Pacific Studies
This study aimed to provide an estimate of the prevalence of marijuana use among Guam's high-school youth and to explore the potential protective and risk factors associated with its use. Using a probability sample (n = 589), our findings revealed that 51 percent of respondents said that they had used marijuana at least once during their life. Males reported using marijuana more frequently than did female respondents. Higher grades and being female were each associated with significantly lower levels of marijuana use. Contrary to predictions, students that discussed their problems and worries with adults, and students that participated in high-school …

Paraeducators In Education, Debbie Morrissette, Patrick J. Morrissette, Julien Richard
Essays in Education
This paper discusses the role of paraeducators within the American educational system. Although it is unknown whether paraeducators enhance the learning of children or the classroom environment, their numbers are rapidly increasing as they are perceived to be vital to the educational system. As revealed in this paper, despite exceptional growth, the practice of using paraeducators generally remains unregulated, underdeveloped, and unmethodical. It is argued that this current state of affairs leaves teachers, paraeducators, and students in a precarious situation. Important issues discussed in this paper include the (a) changing role of the classroom teacher, (b) teacher-paraeducator matching process, (c) …

Short-Term Outcomes For Youth Receiving Runaway And Homeless Shelter Services, Sanna J. Thompson, David E. Pollio, Jodi Constantine, Donna Reid, Von Eugene Nebbitt
Social Work Faculty Publications
Objective: Few studies have assessed the outcomes of runaway/homeless youth that seek assistance from shelter or crisis services, which would provide much needed documentation of intervention effectiveness and point to new directions for service provision. The goals of the current study were to: (1) assess short-term outcomes among runaway/homeless youth using emergency shelters and crisis services and (2) compare short-term outcomes achieved by runaway/homeless youth in crisis shelters with similar youth using other, longer-term treatment modalities. Method: The study sampled 261 youth using runaway/homeless shelters from four midwestern states at intake and six-weeks postdischarge and 47 high-risk youth using longer-term …

A Theory Of The Laws Of War, Eric A. Posner
A Theory Of The Laws Of War, Eric A. Posner
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The laws of war govern the weapons and tactics that belligerents may use against each other. This paper uses a model of conflict to explain and evaluate the laws of war. In the model a nation’s propensity to engage in conflict is a positive function of the effectiveness of military technology, and a negative function of the destructiveness of technology. Accordingly, in theory nations would want to agree to laws of war that permit destructive weapons and tactics but limit their effectiveness. However, nations with different endowments and resources will enjoy differential advantages, and this makes agreement on specific laws …

Global CWD Repository
By the end of 2002, the United States will have provided more than $600,000,000 to 43 countries, as well as to northwest Somalia, for various humanitarian demining efforts, such as deminer training, mine awareness and mine clearance, orthopedic assistance to, and socioeconomic reintegration programs for, landmine accident survivors and their families. More than $100,000,000 of this total was spent in Fiscal Year 2002, one of the largest commitments of any nation involved in financing humanitarian demining activities.
The goals of the U.S. Humanitarian Demining Program are simple and direct: to reduce the loss of life and limb of innocents; to …
