Seasonal Effects On The Reproductive Performance Of Gilts And Sows, Padet Tummaruk, Wichai Tantasuparuk, Mongkol Techakumphu, Annop Kunavongkrit
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Although the domestic pig is not a true seasonal breeder, a seasonal effect on reproductive performance exists. A reduction in reproductive performance during some periods of the year is most pronounced in primiparous sows and is manifested in various ways such as, delayed puberty, prolonged weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), increased number of sows returning to oestrus after mating, decreased conception rate, decreased farrowing rate (FR), decreased litter size and an increased incidence of abortion. Both high ambient temperatures and/or changes in photoperiod have been reported to be the cause of these problems. The pig is considered to be a short-day seasonal …

Radiographic Evaluation Of Coxofemoral Joint Laxity In Dogs Part I : New Stress - Radiographic Positioning Techniques, Phiwipha Kamonrat, Duangdaun Kaenkangploo
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Two new stress-radiographic positioning techniques, namely 60O and 90O stress techniques, were introduced for quantifying hip joint laxity in dogs. The comparative characteristics and efficiency of these new techniques with angled hindlimbs were evaluated relative to the standard hip-extended radiographic technique. Forty, healthy, mongrel dogs with normal hip joint conformation were anesthetized and placed in dorsal recumbency before 3 radiographs of the standard, 60O, and 90O stress techniques were taken. For the 60O stress technique, hindlimbs were extended in parallel to each other at 60O angled to the table top and stifles were slightly rotated inward; femoral heads were manually …

Models Of Soil Moisture Dynamics In Ecohydrology: A Comparative Study, Andrew J. Guswa, M. A. Celia, I. Rodriguez-Iturbe
Models Of Soil Moisture Dynamics In Ecohydrology: A Comparative Study, Andrew J. Guswa, M. A. Celia, I. Rodriguez-Iturbe
Engineering: Faculty Publications
An accurate description of plant ecology requires an understanding of the interplay between precipitation, infiltration, and evapotranspiration. A simple model for soil moisture dynamics, which does not resolve spatial variations in saturation, facilitates analytical expressions of soil and plant behavior as functions of climate, soil, and vegetation characteristics. Proper application of such a model requires knowledge of the conditions under which the underlying simplifications are appropriate. To address this issue, we compare predictions of evapotranspiration and root zone saturation over a growing season from a simple bucket-filling model to those from a more complex, vertically resolved model. Dimensionless groups of …
Local Environmental Laws: Forging A New Weapon In Environmental Protection , Philip Weinberg
Local Environmental Laws: Forging A New Weapon In Environmental Protection , Philip Weinberg
Pace Environmental Law Review
In this paper, Professor Philip Weinberg examines the relationships between local and state governments, in New York and elsewhere, in implementing environmental statutes. Particularly, Professor Weinberg focuses on the extent of federal and state preemption and enabling of towns in environmental areas including zoning, wetlands protection, and the regulation of air, water and solid and hazardous waste. The paper begins with a discussion about federal laws that provide for state implementation and enforcement. Professor Weinberg goes on to explore areas of state law where no comprehensive federal statute exists. In both situations, the paper describes various approaches taken by the …

From Euclid To Growing Smart: The Transformation Of The American Local Land Use Ethic Into Local Land Use And Environmental Controls , Patricia E. Salkin
Pace Environmental Law Review
The focus of this paper is on the way in which the Smart Growth movement caused the convergence of local land use and local environmental law. This paper makes the point that through the current smart growth movement, these previously separate areas of specialization in the law are in fact becoming inextricably intertwined. This paper examines the relationship of smart growth, Growing Smart and local environmental law with a particular focus on what states can do to empower and encourage the enactment of meaningful local environmental land use laws. Aspects of regionalism and inter-jurisdictional cooperation are vital to governments' ability …

What's Really Needed To Effectuate Resource Protection In Communities , Jayne E. Daly
What's Really Needed To Effectuate Resource Protection In Communities , Jayne E. Daly
Pace Environmental Law Review
This article examines the challenges presented by the complexity of environmental laws at the local level, through the use of a case study. It documents the important role that comprehensive planning and local regulations play in protecting the natural resources in our communities. In considering "lessons learned," this article also considers what else is needed to continue protecting the environment at the local level. First, there is an overwhelming need for municipalities to develop a regional strategy to protect their natural resources. Second, local laws play an important role in protecting natural resources. While we often think of the state …

Local Environmental Impact Review: Integrating Land Use And Planning Through Local Environmental Impact Reviews , Kathryn C. Plunkett
Pace Environmental Law Review
This article begins by discussing the role of environmental impact review statutes, starting with NEPA, the genesis of environmental impact review (EIR). The article then segues into an exploration of the environmental impact review statutes in New York, California and Washington, discussing the process and procedures required under those statutes. Methods of EIR that foster integration with local planning and land use regulation are highlighted. The planning procedures in those states as well as authority for local governments to enact EIR statutes are discussed. The paper also addresses the authority available to local governments to initiate local EIR statutes and …
Earning Deference: Reflections On The Merger Of Environmental And Land-Use Law , Michael Allan Wolf
Earning Deference: Reflections On The Merger Of Environmental And Land-Use Law , Michael Allan Wolf
Pace Environmental Law Review
Professor Wolf suggests that there is a brooding omnipresence over local government efforts to protect the environment; that omnipresence is the idea of regulatory takings. Professor Wolf emphasizes that local governments need to earn deference. Since the decision in Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty Co., local governments have been acting in a "Euclidean zone of comfort" when implementing traditional land-use regulations. However, he suggests that local governments may be acting outsides of that zone when they enact environmental regulations and that there is a rich history of negative decisions concerning local environmental regulations. Professor Wolf then offers three strategies …
The Beach Zone: Using Local Land Use Authority To Preserve Barrier Islands , Jessica Vantine, Tiffany B. Zezula
The Beach Zone: Using Local Land Use Authority To Preserve Barrier Islands , Jessica Vantine, Tiffany B. Zezula
Pace Environmental Law Review
This article is an exploration of the barrier island's unique landform and the solution to its protection. By using Fire Island, a critical barrier island off the coast of Long Island, New York, as a case study, this article attempts to offer a paramount solution, "the beach zone." The authors begin by discussing the natural processes of the barrier islands, focusing on tidal cycles, sea level rising, and periodic storm surges, which threaten development on them. They illustrate the dynamic nature of the barrier islands that often make them unsuitable for permanent development. To date, the primary focus of both …

American Indian Treaties And The Presidents: A Guide To The Treaties Proclaimed By Each Administration, Charles D. Bernholz
American Indian Treaties And The Presidents: A Guide To The Treaties Proclaimed By Each Administration, Charles D. Bernholz
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
During the period following independence and within that political climate, the vast majority of the presidents listed in appendix A faced the obligations of making treaties with the Native American tribes. That could not have been a light responsibility, given the diversity of Indian societies and tribal organizations throughout the continent. The variety is reflected directly in the locations of the signatory tribes to the treaties listed in appendix B. George Washington dealt with the tribes of the original colonies, whereas later presidents who made treaties with the Apache and Pacific Northwest tribes faced the difficulty of administering treaties made …

Mycobacterium Smegmatis L-Alanine Dehydrogenase (Ald) Is Required For Proficient Utilization Of Alanine As A Sole Nitrogen Source And Sustained Anaerobic Growth, Zhengyu Feng, Nancy E. Caceres, Gautam Sarath, Raul G. Barletta
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
NAD(H)-dependent L-alanine dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.1) (Ald) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-alanine and the reductive amination of pyruvate. To assess the physiological role of Ald in Mycobacterium smegmatis, we cloned the ald gene, identified its promoter, determined the protein expression levels, and analyzed the combined effects of nutrient supplementation, oxygen availability, and growth stage on enzyme activity. High Ald activities were observed in cells grown in the presence of L- or D-alanine regardless of the oxygen availability and growth stage. In exponentially growing cells under aerobic conditions, supplementation with alanine resulted in a 25- to 50-fold increase in the …

The Use Of Power Blocs Of Integrated Corporate Directorships To Articulate A Power Structure: Case Study And Research Recommendations, F. Gregory Hayden, Kelle R. Wood, Asuman Kaya
College of Business: Faculty Publications
The purpose here is the explanation of five related concerns. First, we explain a new method to analyze and measure the network of interlocks among the directors of different corporations. Second, we use the method articulated is used to analyze and describe the network that forms the corporate power structure in which the Central Interstate Low-Level Radioactive Waste Compact (CIC) is enmeshed. We have been greatly surprised by the findings because the literature surveyed concerning corporate director overlaps does not contain any examples of such a dense and extensive network of corporate connections as exist in the CIC. Third, from …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The specificity of the ATP:corrinoid adenosyltransferase (CobA) enzyme of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium LT2 for its nucleotide substrate was tested using ATP analogs and alternative nucleotide donors. The enzyme showed broad specificity for the nucleotide base and required the 2’-OH group of the ribosyl moiety of ATP for activity. 31P NMR spectroscopy was used to identify inorganic triphosphate (PPPi) as the byproduct of the reaction catalyzed by the CobA enzyme. Cleavage of triphosphate into pyrophosphate and orthophosphate did not occur, indicating that triphosphate cleavage was not required for release of the adenosylcorrinoid product. Triphosphate was a strong …
