Heterosexual Males: A Group Forgotten By The Profession Of Social Work, Jordan I. Kosberg Sep 2002

Heterosexual Males: A Group Forgotten By The Profession Of Social Work, Jordan I. Kosberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social work literature has mainly focused upon females and gay males. A search was undertaken of general references to heterosexual males in published social-work authored articles and appearing in book reviews and publishers' ads in two prominent social work journals during the last decade. The conclusion reached was that heterosexual males are seldom discussed and when they are discussed they are portrayed in a very biased manner. It is believed that social workers do not receive necessary preparation for understanding and working with heterosexual males, especially from minority and immigrant groups, who are facing emotional, physical, interpersonal, and family problems. …

Four Criteria For Engaging Girls In The Middle Level Classroom, Gayle A. Buck, Nancy Ehlers

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Authenticity, choice, conceptual understanding, and motivation all play a role in engaging middle level learners. This article shows how these criteria apply to designing lessons for girls.

Listening to young adolescent girls has greatly altered my ideas of what it means to teach at the middle level. Using the ideas and attitudes that these girls bring with them to the science classroom, I now select what happens in that classroom. Others are encouraged to use this rubric to select activities as they attempt to engage the adolescent girls in the middle level curriculum. No longer looking upon girls to see …

The Biases Of Risk Tradeoff Analysis: Towards Parity In Environmental And Health-And-Safety Regulation, Samuel J. Rascoff, Richard L. Revesz Sep 2002

The Biases Of Risk Tradeoff Analysis: Towards Parity In Environmental And Health-And-Safety Regulation, Samuel J. Rascoff, Richard L. Revesz

University of Chicago Law Review

Risk tradeoff analysis is in the process of transforming the practice of regulation. Its core idea is simple and intuitively appealing: Regulations undertaken to minimize or eliminate certain health risks often have the perverse effect of promoting other risks. A serious analysis of the impact of a regulation should pay attention not only to its primary effects in reducing the so-called target risk, but also to the secondary effects of the regulation in bringing about "ancillary risks." In this way, risk tradeoff analysis promises a more rational technique for the evaluation of regulation. Risk tradeoff analysis, however, focuses exclusively on …
