Insurance Insurance Generally: Prohibit Discriminatory Practices; Require Notification Of Cancellation, Nonrenewal, Or Other Termination Of Insurance To Certain Persons; Provide Standards And Procedures For Verification Of Benefits And Precertifications Relating To Managed Health Benefit Plans; Provide For Liability And Personnel; Include Certain Practices Among Unfair Insurance Practices; Provide For Remedies For Violations, Cheralynn M. Gregoire
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act, titled the Consumers Health Insurance Protection Act, provides that insurers must follow certain procedures when precertifying or verifying enrollee benefits. The Act requires insurers to provide continuity of care to certain individuals in the event they, or a physician, cancels a physician's contract. The Act also makes discrimination based on color, race, religion, and ethnic or national origin in the insurance industry generally an unfair practice. The Act requires insurers to notify enrollees of plan termination, cancellation, or nonrenewal, and of any resulting conversion or continuation rights.

Innovatively Saving The Future Of Transportation: Small Aircraft Transportation System (Sats), Jocelyn Nickerson, Brent Bowen, Russell Smith, Scott Tarry, Massoum Moussavi
Journal of Public Transportation
The aviation industry is a rapidly changing entity of the world’s economy. Millions of travelers consistently choose aviation as their mode of transportation because it is reliable, time-efficient, and safe. However, high demand has led to delays, cancellations, and gridlock. As the need for efficient travel options increases, passengers will look for other avenues of travel. Fortuitously, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its partners are developing a unique and innovative alternative to this problem. The solution, known as the Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS), will likely change the face of general aviation (GA) as it is known …
Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein
Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …
Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner
Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This paper examines the effect of tort rules on behavior if people are optimistic or insensitive relative to true probabilities. The paper shows that under certain conditions both strict liability and negligence cause levels of care that are higher than, or equal to, what is efficient (rather than lower). The paper also shows that under certain conditions strict liability and negligence cause the same level of activity among optimists (more than is efficient). Other implications for tort law are discussed, as are the sensitivity of the results to the choice of how to model probability errors. Implications for contract law, …

Anticoagularnt Therapy In Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome Patient After Cerebrovascular Accident : A Casereport, Hsu-Ping Chien, Willy Chou, Yu-Lin Wang, Kao-Chang Lin
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Primary antiphospholipid syndrome is a rare disease of vasculopathy, which is usually found in the stroke partient with onset during childhood and young adulthood. We report a female patient who had a history of multiple spontaneous abortions in the past. However, the diagnosis was not made until a cerebrovascular accident happened to her. After then, she started to receive anticoagulant therapy and rehabilitation program. No further cerebrovascular accident occurred in the following 22 months. By this report, we remind that a female patient with history of frequent abortion needs to be investigated carefully to search the possibility of antiphospholipid syndrome.

On Modeling And Controlling The Effects Of Variable Labor Effort: A Theoretical Explanation Of The Truck System, William Alpert, John Stiver
Economics Working Papers
In most Industrial and Industrializing Countries, labor markets are characterized by employers offering packages of wage, non-wage, and working conditions to prospective workers. In return, workers offer to apply effort to tasks determined by employers. This paper attempts to examine these employer-employee contracts using a stockout avoidance model with employees providing variable labor effort.

Shirking And Motivation In Firms: Survey Evidence On Worker Attitudes, Lanse P. Minkler
Economics Working Papers
In an extensive national survey, 82.7% of the respondents report that they are very likely to keep an agreement to work hard if they agreed to, even if it was almost impossible for their employer to monitor them. Based on mean responses, the rank order of motivations in descending importance is: moral, intrinsic, peer-pressure, and positive incentives. Respondents also report that fairness considerations are important and that they are especially likely to keep agreements to do a good job with honest employers. Logit analysis indicates that increases in moral and intrinsic motivations increase the likelihood of keeping agreements to provide …
Comparative Proteome Analysis Of Brucella Melitensis Vaccine Strain Rev 1 And A Virulent Strain, 16m, Michel Eschenbrenner, Mary Ann Wagner, Troy A. Horn, Jo Ann Kraycer, Cesar V. Mujer, Sue Hagius, Philip Elzer, Vito G. Delvecchio
Comparative Proteome Analysis Of Brucella Melitensis Vaccine Strain Rev 1 And A Virulent Strain, 16m, Michel Eschenbrenner, Mary Ann Wagner, Troy A. Horn, Jo Ann Kraycer, Cesar V. Mujer, Sue Hagius, Philip Elzer, Vito G. Delvecchio
Faculty Publications
The genus Brucella consists of bacterial pathogens that cause brucellosis, a major zoonotic disease characterized by undulant fever and neurological disorders in humans. Among the different Brucella species, Brucella melitensis is considered the most virulent. Despite successful use in animals, the vaccine strains remain infectious for humans. To understand the mechanism of virulence in B. melitensis, the proteome of vaccine strain Rev 1 was analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and compared to that of virulent strain 16M. The two strains were grown under identical laboratory conditions. Computer-assisted analysis of the two B. melitensis proteomes revealed proteins expressed in either 16M …

Late-Season Insect Pests Of Soybean In Louisiana: Preventive Management And Yield Enhancement (Bulletin #880), Melissa W. Willrich, David J. Boethel, B. Rogers Leonard, David C. Blouin
LSU AgCenter Bulletins
The velvetbean caterpillar and the soybean looper are important pests of soybeans in Louisiana. These late-season soybean insect pests create the need for the continuous development of insecticide programs that are cost effective, maintain profitable yields and conserve natural enemies.
