The Role Of Adherence In Mediating The Relationship Between Depression And Health Outcomes, Rena R. Wing, Suzanne Phelan, Deborah Tate Oct 2002

The Role Of Adherence In Mediating The Relationship Between Depression And Health Outcomes, Rena R. Wing, Suzanne Phelan, Deborah Tate

Kinesiology and Public Health

Depression has been linked to poor health outcome in a number of studies; however, the mechanism underlying this relationship has received little attention. This paper explores the possibility that adherence mediates the relationship between depression and outcome. Principal findings regarding the relationship between depression, adherence, and outcome are reviewed. The data suggest that depression is related, at least moderately, to poorer adherence to a variety of treatment components. The relationship between adherence and outcome is more difficult to establish. In addition, current data, albeit limited, do not support the hypothesis that adherence mediates the relationship between depression and outcome. An …

An Assessment Of The Factors That Influence The Promotion And Delivery Of Sport, Fitness, And Health Courses: Contributions Of Marketing To Physical Education, Ketra L. Armstrong, Camille O'Bryant, Carla Costa

Kinesiology and Public Health

The factors that influence students' enrollment in sport, fitness, and health courses, and their evaluation of the quality of service they receive continues to be of interest. A case study exposed a variety of factors influencing the promotion and delivery of sport, fitness. and health courses. While most of the factors identified were only minimally influential, the most prominent reasons for enrolling in sport, fitness, and health courses were related to skill development or enhancement of knowledge about health anti fitness. The "performance of the instructor" received the highest raring relating to course delivery quality, and "improvement in fitness" received …

The Market Value Of Reducing Cancer Risk: Hedonic Housing Prices With Changing Information, W. Kip Viscusi, Ted Gayer, James T. Hamilton Oct 2002

The Market Value Of Reducing Cancer Risk: Hedonic Housing Prices With Changing Information, W. Kip Viscusi, Ted Gayer, James T. Hamilton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In this paper, we use housing price changes occurring after the release of a regulatory agency's environmental risk information to estimate the value people place on cancer risk reduction. Using a large original data set on the repeat sales of houses, matched with detailed data on hazardous waste cancer risk and newspaper publicity, we find that housing prices respond in a rational manner to changes in information about risk. Since the new information indicated that the sites in our sample pose relatively low cancer risk, the informational release led residents to lower their risk beliefs, resulting in an average housing …

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola Oct 2002

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola

Bioelectrics Publications

In vivo electroporation is an efficient means of increasing plasmid DNA delivery to normal tissues, such as skin and muscle, as well as directly to tumors. In the experiments described here, plasmid DNA was delivered by in vivo electroporation to B16 mouse melanomas using two very different pulsing protocols. Reporter expression increased 21- or 42-fold, respectively with electroporation over injection alone. The growth of experimental melanomas with an approximate diameter of 4 mm on the day of treatment was monitored after electroporation delivery of reporter plasmid DNA. Remarkably, short-term complete regressions using one of these pulsing protocols occurred in up …

BYU Studies

On January 7, 1899, Joseph F. Smith, then a Counselor to Church President Lorenzo Snow, left Salt Lake City to visit the Church's plantation in Laie, Hawaii. The main purpose for this trip to Hawaii was to benefit the health of President Smith's wife Sarah Ellen Richards Smith, who had just passed through a "very severe illness." They were accompanied by two of his daughters, Minerva and Alice. President Smith's "loyal friend and former missionary companion" Albert W. Davis and Edna Davis, Albert Davis's daughter, were also on the trip. They first went by train to San Francisco and on …

Respiratory Arrest In A Child After Flushing Of Pancuronium From The Dead Space Of Intravenous Cannula, Robyna Irshad Khan, Fazal Hameed Khan, Hamid Iqil Naqvi Oct 2002

Respiratory Arrest In A Child After Flushing Of Pancuronium From The Dead Space Of Intravenous Cannula, Robyna Irshad Khan, Fazal Hameed Khan, Hamid Iqil Naqvi

Department of Anaesthesia

It is common practice for patients admitted to Intensive Care Units to have indwelling intravenous cannulae. Sometimes these cannulae are used only for the administration of drugs and are closed otherwise. Residual drugs in the deadspace of these intravenous cannulae as well as connected stoppers or 3-way stopcocks can later be flushed unknowingly. We would like to report a case in which inadvertent flushing of residual pancuronium caused complete muscle paralysis and respiratory arrest in a young child.

Analysis Of The Aboriculture Industry Safety Culture From The Standpoint Of Injures, Illnesses, Employee Response, And Industry Standards, Joshua T. Mcclenahan

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The author researched 215 recorded injuries and illnesses to all field employees between January 1, 1991 and July 1, 2002 at an arboricultural company in California. Detailed interviews were conducted with each of the 38 field employees to determine employee perceptions of safety training, management, communication, and personal discomfort to provide a clearer picture of the company safety program. This information was correlated with the tree worker claims and industry standards to determine the effectiveness of the safety program based on employee discomforts and claim related descriptive statistics. The claims' tabulations show that back strains are the most prominent injuries …

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie Oct 2002

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie

Articles & Chapters

We have used confocal and widefield microscopy to image thrombus formation in real time in the microcirculation of a living mouse. This system provides high-speed, near-simultaneous acquisition of images of multiple fluorescent probes and of a brightfield channel. Vascular injury is induced with a laser focused through the microscope optics. We observed platelet deposition, tissue factor accumulation and fibrin generation after laser-induced endothelial injury in a single developing thrombus. The initiation of blood coagulation in vivo entailed the initial accumulation of tissue factor on the upstream and thrombus–vessel wall interface of the developing thrombus. Subsequently tissue factor was associated with …

Drug Eluting Stent: A Major Advance In Fighting Coronary Artery Restenosis, Yuk-Kong Lau Oct 2002

Drug Eluting Stent: A Major Advance In Fighting Coronary Artery Restenosis, Yuk-Kong Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Since the first use of coronary angioplasty in 1977, there have been major growth and development in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Due to the advances in techniques, experiences, devices, and newer potent antiplatelet and antithrombotic medications, PCI is increasingly performed in highly complex and high risk patients with a reasonably low complication rate. Coupled with reduced discomfort, shorter hospital stay and recovery time, it has far outnumbered the volume of coronary artery bypass surgery. Currently, 1.7 million PCI procedures are performed annually worldwide with increases by 15-20% per year the last decade.

Florida Community College Collection Assessment Report, Anna H. Perrault, Richard Madaus, Ann Armbrister, Jeannie Dixon, Heather Thuotte-Pierson

School of Information Faculty Publications

In 2002 a study was conducted of community college collections in Florida as a follow-up and an additional interval to a similar study conducted in 1998. The analysis in 2002 compared the profile of the LINCC database, three peer groups of community colleges by enrollment size, and each of the twenty-eight community colleges with the 1998 study results. Among the significant findings are: The median age of LINCC collective holdings improved between 1998 and 2002, declining from 24 years to 22 years. The “year reached 50%” for the LINCC database in 2002 was 1980, meaning that half of the monographs …
