Financial Information Base Of Participants In Fsa Borrower Training, Gregory Ibendahl, Steve Isaacs, Richard Trimble Oct 2002

Financial Information Base Of Participants In Fsa Borrower Training, Gregory Ibendahl, Steve Isaacs, Richard Trimble

Journal of Extension

The article presents the results of a survey designed to assess the financial records knowledge of farmers in FSA training. Questions are asked about which records farmers are currently keeping and how they use those records and financial information. Results suggest farmers are keeping track of mainly cash expenses and are not developing much analysis from their records. Farmers do appear to appreciate the importance of financial records, however. FSA borrower training can help borrowers improve their financial record knowledge to make better farm business decisions. Also, the 2-day format of the workshop seems to be successful at providing detailed …

Creating The Base For Extension Priority Issues, Diana Martenson

Journal of Extension

Field and campus faculty partnered in a trend analysis process that established a baseline of trends and resulting issues important to Minnesotans over the next 3 years. Approximately 70% of the trends and issues identified resulted from both the field and the discipline process. This congruence launched a program-development process mobilizing the organization around 14 critical issues. Work teams are currently identifying Extension's niche with these issues, and staff development, resources, and expertise are being leveraged for appropriate local response.

The Conceptual Model Of Peace Operations (Cmpo) As A Framework For Comparing National Doctrines For International Peacekeeping Operations, Paul R. Rickert

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research generates a method for easy comparison of national military doctrines as they pertain to peacekeeping operations by using the Conceptual Model of Peace Operations (CMPO) as an organizational framework. Microsoft Excel is utilized as an interface as a means for individuals or organizations to compare individual national peacekeeping doctrines on an independent framework. This project also utilizes graphing techniques to allow users to view more generalized comparisons of doctrine so conclusions might be more readily drawn with regards to specific areas of coverage, areas of doctrine needing to be more fully or less extensively addressed, and the political …

Recruitment Of Engaged Couples For Premarital Counseling: An Empirical Examination Of The Importance Of Program Characteristics And Topics To Potential Participants, Kieran T. Sullivan, Carmen Anderson Oct 2002

Recruitment Of Engaged Couples For Premarital Counseling: An Empirical Examination Of The Importance Of Program Characteristics And Topics To Potential Participants, Kieran T. Sullivan, Carmen Anderson

Psychology

The recent emphasis on prevention in helping couples to avoid marital distress may be limited by lack of participation in prevention programs by engaged couples. The purpose of this study is to understand what potential participants perceive are attractive characteristics in premarital prevention approaches. Eighty-six engaged couples completed questionnaires assessing demographics, personality and the relative importance of premarital program characteristics. The results indicate that leader characteristics, content, and topics such as communication, finances, and problem-solving are the most important elements of premarital counseling to couples. Differences based on gender and risk level are reported. Suggestions are made for more effective …

Of the estimated 1,682,900 youth with a runaway/thrownaway episode during the study period, 37 percent were missing from their caretakers, and 21 percent were reported to authorities for help in locating them. Two-thirds of youth with a runaway/thrownaway episode were ages 15–17, and 71 …

Back To The Future: The Managed Care Revolution, Gail B. Agrawal, Howard R. Veit Oct 2002

Back To The Future: The Managed Care Revolution, Gail B. Agrawal, Howard R. Veit

Law and Contemporary Problems

The evolution to a managed care system did not achieve the complete, fundamental change in the health care delivery system that was envisioned by some of its early proponents. As the managed care movement evolved beyond the prepaid group practice model, it focused primarily on methods used to spread the cost of health care services.

Market Failures And The Evolution Of State Regulation Of Managed Care, Frank A. Sloan, Mark A. Hall Oct 2002

Market Failures And The Evolution Of State Regulation Of Managed Care, Frank A. Sloan, Mark A. Hall

Law and Contemporary Problems

Sloan and Hall reflect on whether the market defects identified explain why the managed care revolution has stalled and whether patient protection laws can help put managed care back on track. From a perspective of reliance on market forces to achieve socially desirable outcomes, the fundamental failure of managed care is the failure to produce competing systems of health care delivery that force competitive processes and consumer choice to focus on trade-offs between the cost and quality of care.

A Copernican View Of Health Care Antitrust, William M. Sage, Peter J. Hammer Oct 2002

A Copernican View Of Health Care Antitrust, William M. Sage, Peter J. Hammer

Law and Contemporary Problems

Sage and Hammer use the analogy of Copernican astronomy to suggest that understanding the dramatic change wrought by managed care requires a conceptual reorientation regarding the meaning of competition in health care and its appropriate legal and regulatory oversight. Both share the belief that misperceiving the world limits potential for technical and social progress.

Conservative Or Constitutionalist?, Gary S. Lawson Oct 2002

Conservative Or Constitutionalist?, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

The persistence of the question posed by the editors of this journal demonstrates that legal conservatives have an identity crisis. In large measure, that crisis is an artifact of the ambiguity in the term "legal conservative." I use the term roughly to mean someone who believes in a variant of original meaning for interpreting constitutions and statutes' and who views the common law as a device for securing social coordination within a spontaneous order-all overlaid with a strong respect for the Anglo-American, Rule of Law tradition. As definitions go, this is pretty imprecise. There is no single meaning for original …

Pasture Condition Guides For The Pilbara, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell Oct 2002

Pasture Condition Guides For The Pilbara, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell

Agriculture reports

These pasture condition guides are relevant to about 192 000 square kilometres of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The rangeland of the Pilbara can be separated into 12 very broad pasture types. The ‘pasture type’ is not strictly a botanical classification because, in determining such a class of pastoral lands, the perennial plant species that contribute to stock production have an over-riding importance. Even so, each pasture type represents a broad group of similar vegetation associations or ‘site types’ which will have similar management requirements for pastoralism. The aim of this publication is to provide pastoralists with descriptions and …
