Reflections On Racism And World Order, Winston P. Nagan Oct 2002

Reflections On Racism And World Order, Winston P. Nagan

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article is about international racism. Racism is not simply a local or national phenomenon, it is an immense global problem. Indeed, its tentacles stretch from the local to the global and back to the local. Let us put the picture of international racism into perspective by tying it to the claims made to eradicate racism in economic relations. Apart from affirmative action, there are two other approaches: either to assert the notion that reparations is a way to ameliorate the worst manifestations of racism and provide for racial justice, or to join that with the notion that there is …

The Role Of Nongovernmental Organizations In African Public Policy, Andrew I. E. Ewoh Oct 2002

The Role Of Nongovernmental Organizations In African Public Policy, Andrew I. E. Ewoh

African Social Science Review

The emergence of nongovernmental organizations over the past three decades has been a positive addition to the political mix and public policy processes in Africa. Indeed, the proliferation of NGOs relationship with states in Africa can pave the way for increased governmental responsiveness and accountability. The analysis suggests that NGOs can be more effective in influencing public policy if they become aware of the policy environment and move away from a project orientation to a mobilization of other policy actors. Also, they must go beyond individual agendas and long-established roles to identify some emerging approaches to local development and resource …

Nonprofit Organziations In Africa: Financial Strategies And Challenges, Christie Chilo Onwujuba Oct 2002

Nonprofit Organziations In Africa: Financial Strategies And Challenges, Christie Chilo Onwujuba

African Social Science Review

This study investigates the financial conditions of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in Africa with emphasis on the sources of funds. Africa faced with the enormous task of development and improving the general well being of its people could benefit from the services of nonprofit organizations. However, the ability of these NPOs to accomplish development goals and represent the interest of the marginalized depends on the availability and adequacy of resources. The results of this study contradict the common notion that the growth of the sector is fueled by the financial support of governments in the industrialized countries. Grassroot NPOs in Africa …

Etsu Today - Fall 2002, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University Oct 2002

Etsu Today - Fall 2002, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

Over the past year, all of us have come to a deeper appreciation of human relationships. When I wrote this column one year ago, none of us, of course, could have imagined what would transpire just days later. September 11 brought warlike conditions to our own country. Our campus reacted with shock, grief, courage, and resolve. Students, faculty, and staff joined hands in prayer for the victims, their families, and the future of the world. They wrote expressions of sorrow and love on banners. They built replicas of the World Trade Center’s twin towers using canned food, which was lovingly …

The Socio-Legal Acceptance Of New Technologies: A Close Look At Artificial Insemination, Gaia Bernstein Oct 2002

The Socio-Legal Acceptance Of New Technologies: A Close Look At Artificial Insemination, Gaia Bernstein

Washington Law Review

Heated debates often surround the introduction of an important new technology into society, as exemplified by current controversies surrounding human cloning and privacy protection on the Internet. Underlying these controversies are disruptions to central socio-legal values caused by these new technologies. Whether new technologies will eventually be accepted by society is often contingent on the reaction of the legal system. This mandates the formulation of a conceptual framework for understanding and structuring the way the law should react in cases surrounding the adoption of new technologies. By using the case study of artificial insemination this Article develops the tools for …

Race, Crime And The Pool Of Surplus Criminality: Or Why The "War On Drugs" Was A "War On Blacks", Kenneth B. Nunn Oct 2002

Race, Crime And The Pool Of Surplus Criminality: Or Why The "War On Drugs" Was A "War On Blacks", Kenneth B. Nunn

UF Law Faculty Publications

The War on Drugs has had a devastating effect on African American communities nationwide. The concept of the pool of surplus criminality may explain the drug war's focus on African Americans. Faced with a perceived drug problem, White Americans naturally identified African American people as the source of that threat and targeted them for police harassment and penal control. There are ways in which the drug war may be construed as a race war. The disproportionate impact on the African American community, evidence that policy makers anticipated the drug war would disproportionately harm the African American community, and the historic …

An Evidence-Based Review Of Dopamine Receptor Agonists In The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Dirk Deleu, Margaret G. Northway, Yolande Hanssens Oct 2002

An Evidence-Based Review Of Dopamine Receptor Agonists In The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Dirk Deleu, Margaret G. Northway, Yolande Hanssens

Saudi Medical Journal

Apomorphine and certain ergot alkaloids (bromocriptine, lisuride and pergolide) have been available for several decades; for the last few years, they were joined by newer dopamine agonists (cabergoline, pramipexole and ropinirole) most of them are non-ergolines. Each of these dopamine agonists has its own pharmacological characteristics and occupies a place in the pharmacotherapy of Parkinsons disease. In this evidence-based review, emphasis is put on the clinical efficacy of dopamine agonists in early and advanced Parkinsons disease, and where possible comparative evidence regarding their efficacy and safety is provided. In addition, their clinical pharmacokinetics, adverse effect profiles and most relevant interactions …

Misdiagnosing Esophageal Perforation As Esophageal Atresia, Shaheed M. Meeralebbae, Seidahmed M. Zain, Abdelbasit O. Basir, Abdullah M. Ahmed, Abomelha M. Abdullah Oct 2002

Misdiagnosing Esophageal Perforation As Esophageal Atresia, Shaheed M. Meeralebbae, Seidahmed M. Zain, Abdelbasit O. Basir, Abdullah M. Ahmed, Abomelha M. Abdullah

Saudi Medical Journal

We report a case of traumatic perforation of esophagus misdiagnosed as esophageal atresia in a 1.7 kg preterm (28 weeks) twin. Initial resistance to the passage of orogastric tube and failure of passage of contrast material down the esophagus prompted the diagnosis of esophageal atresia. Subsequently, the passage of orogastric tube as well as radiological findings at the age of 7 days made us change the diagnosis to traumatic perforation of esophagus. The baby was managed conservatively and discharged in good health at the age of 2 months. Literature is reviewed and the attention of pediatricians is drawn to this …

Childbearing In Ghana: How Beliefs Affect Care, Michelle Fischer Oct 2002

Childbearing In Ghana: How Beliefs Affect Care, Michelle Fischer

African Diaspora ISPs

Childbearing is an event in a woman's life that requires particular care. Especially in villages, Ghanaian women must choose between modern, traditional, and religious caregivers. The type of care they chose depends on what cultural and religious beliefs they hold. Because of Ghana's prenatal society, infertility is the most heartbreaking affliction that can befall a woman. Caregivers in Komenda offer remedies ranging from herbs to prayer to agreement with fertility gods. Information regarding family planning is not widespread throughout the country, which forces women to rely on unreliable natural practices. Because of the negative stigma attached to contraceptive use, many …
