Are We Underestimating The Leukemogenic Risk Of Hydroxyurea, Ali H. Al-Jam’A, Ibrahim A. Al-Dabbous, Adil A. Al-Khatti, Folayan G. Esan

Saudi Medical Journal

Hydroxyurea is an established drug that has been used for the treatment of myeloproliferative disorders and some solid tumors for some time. In recent years it has also been found to be effective in the treatment of sickle cell disease. Short term side effects are not serious, and are manageable. The major concern is the potential leukemogenesis with long term use. The risk of leukemogenesis is not defined with its use in benign hematological conditions. We report a case of acute myeloid leukemia with no preceding myelodysplastic syndrome, occurring after 2 years of hydroxyurea therapy in a patient with sickle …

Mining Of Correlated Rules In Genome Sequences, L. Lin, L. Wong, Tze-Yun Leong, P. S. Lai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the huge amount of data collected by scientists in the molecular genetics community in recent years, there exists a need to develop some novel algorithms based on existing data mining techniques to discover useful information from genome databases. We propose an algorithm that integrates the statistical method, association rule mining, and classification rule mining in the discovery of allelic combinations of genes that are peculiar to certain phenotypes of diseased patients.

Evaluating The Impacts Of Local Economic Development Policies On Local Economic Outcomes: What Has Been Done And What Is Doable?, Timothy J. Bartik Nov 2002

Evaluating The Impacts Of Local Economic Development Policies On Local Economic Outcomes: What Has Been Done And What Is Doable?, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper argues that more rigorous evaluations of local economic development policies are feasible. Programs that aid selected small firms can be rigorously evaluated using an experimental approach, without excluding firms from assistance, by randomly assigning some firms to receive more intense marketing efforts by the program. Programs that aid distressed local areas can be rigorously evaluated by random assignment of the program among eligible distressed areas. If an experiment cannot be done, a variety of statistical approaches can be used to compare firms or areas that use the program with comparison groups of firms or areas that do not …

Vestibular Information Is Required For Dead Reckoning In The Rat, Douglas G. Wallace, Dustin J. Hines, Sergio M. Pellis, Ian Q. Whishaw Nov 2002

Vestibular Information Is Required For Dead Reckoning In The Rat, Douglas G. Wallace, Dustin J. Hines, Sergio M. Pellis, Ian Q. Whishaw

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Dead reckoning is an on-line form of spatial navigation used by an animal to identify its present location and return directly to a starting location, even after circuitous outward trips. At present, it is not known which of several self-movement cues (efferent copy from movement commands, proprioceptive information, sensory flow, or vestibular information) are used to compute homeward trajectories. To determine whether vestibular information is important for dead reckoning, the impact of chemical labyrinthectomy was evaluated in a test that demanded on-line computation of a homeward trajectory. Rats were habituated to leave a refuge that was visible from all locations …

Toxoplasma Gondii Induces Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor And Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor Secretion By Human Fibroblasts: Implications For Neutrophil Apoptosis, Jacqueline Y. Channon, Kristin A. Miselis, Laurie A. Minns, Chaitali Dutta, Lloyd H. Kasper Nov 2002

Toxoplasma Gondii Induces Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor And Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor Secretion By Human Fibroblasts: Implications For Neutrophil Apoptosis, Jacqueline Y. Channon, Kristin A. Miselis, Laurie A. Minns, Chaitali Dutta, Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

Human neutrophils are rescued from apoptosis following incubation with once-washed, fibroblast-derived Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites. Both infected and uninfected neutrophils are rescued, implicating a soluble mediator. In this study we investigated the origin and identity of this soluble mediator. Neutrophils were incubated either with purified tachyzoites or with conditioned medium derived from T. gondii-infected human fibroblasts. Conditioned medium was found to be a potent stimulus that delayed neutrophil apoptosis up to 72 h, whereas purified and extensively washed tachyzoites had no effect. Delayed apoptosis correlated with up-regulation of the neutrophil antiapoptotic protein, Mcl-1, and the neutrophil interleukin 3 receptor alpha subunit …

Special Feature: The Swiss In Eighteenth-Century South Carolina: Novelist Tracks Early Settlers, Sue Duffy, Perry Baker

Swiss American Historical Society Review

While writing three novels from her comfortable brick home in Lexington, Carol Williams lived many lives in the 18th-century backcountry of South Carolina. Writers do that sort of thing. To tell the story of Swiss immigrants in the lands along the Saluda and Congaree rivers, the author became the hunter, the farmer and the soldier desperate to survive in a severe and glorious wilderness.

After protracted deliberations, the Environmental Protection Agency decided to dredge large quantities of sediment from the upper reach of the Hudson River in order to remove a small portion of the PCB's that came from two General Electric factories. They used these chemicals from the 1940s through the mid-1970s. The corporation will be required to pay for the clean up. The agency's administrators appointed by both Presidents Clinton and Bush as well as leading newspapers explained the decision to the public as required to protect the broad public from a significant risk to human health. This explanation is inconsistent with …
