Altered Expression Of Skeletal Muscle Myosin Isoforms In Cancer Cachexia, Gary M. Diffee, Katherine Kalfas, Sadeeka Al-Majid, Donna O. Mccarthy Nov 2002

Altered Expression Of Skeletal Muscle Myosin Isoforms In Cancer Cachexia, Gary M. Diffee, Katherine Kalfas, Sadeeka Al-Majid, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Cachexia is commonly seen in cancer and is characterized by severe muscle wasting, but little is known about the effect of cancer cachexia on expression of contractile protein isoforms such as myosin. Other causes of muscle atrophy shift expression of myosin isoforms toward increased fast (type II) isoform expression. We injected mice with murine C-26 adenocarcinoma cells, a tumor cell line that has been shown to cause muscle wasting. Mice were killed 21 days after tumor injection, and hindlimb muscles were removed. Myosin heavy chain (MHC) and myosin light chain (MLC) content was determined in muscle homogenates by SDS-PAGE. Body …

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith Nov 2002

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

This Article proposes a new theory to unify the law of fiduciary duty. The prevailing view holds that fiduciary law is atomistic, arising for varied reasons in established categories of cases (such as trustee-beneficiary and director-shareholder) and ad hoc in relationships where one person trusts another and becomes vulnerable to harm as a result. By contrast, the critical resource theory of fiduciary duty holds that every relationship properly designated as fiduciary conforms to the following pattern: one party (the fiduciary) acts on behalf of another party (the beneficiary) while exercising discretion with respect to a critical resource belonging to the …

The Case For Requiring A Proportionality Test To Assess Compliance With Title Ix In High School Athletics, Patrick N. Findlay Nov 2002

The Case For Requiring A Proportionality Test To Assess Compliance With Title Ix In High School Athletics, Patrick N. Findlay

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The debate over Title IX and athletics has neglected the impact that Title IX could have on high school athletic programs. An increased focus on high school athletic opportunity is important because the benefits for girls that participate in athletics as they grow up, and for society, are so significant. In this article, the author proposes that compliance with Title IX in high school athletics is only appropriately measured by way of a test that requires schools maintain athletic participation rates for each sex in proportion to the population of each sex within the school. Known as "the proportionality test," …

War And The Contest Over National Identity, Roberta L. Coles Nov 2002

War And The Contest Over National Identity, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This paper looks at a recent historical moment in which the American national identity was defined and contested in the public arena. The Persian Gulf crisis of 1990-91 presents a case in point in which official actors attempted to define the American character and in doing so prescribed particular actions necessary to fulfill what it means to be an American. President George Bush’s discourse used the crisis to rejuvenate US prestige and American confidence. He described Americans as unique in esteemed values and America as the only country capable of leading the world. In so doing, he invited American participation …

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

OSGi (Open Service Gateway initiative) is an emerging technology to address the missing point in the value chain to deliver services (pay-per-view TV programs, energy management, security management, etc.) to home premises. It offers an open platform and contacting point to allow service providers (cable companies, utility companies, etc.) to easily and quickly develop, download and update services to customers in a home or SOHO/ ROBO (Small Office Home Office / Remote Office Branch Office) environment. Although originally developed for purposes such as home automation, OSGi has found its power in many other situations. Recently, it has been deployed within …

Hazardous Heuristics, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2002

Hazardous Heuristics, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

New work on heuristics and biases has explored the role of emotions and affect; the idea of “dual processing”; the place of heuristics and biases outside of the laboratory; and the implications of heuristics and biases for policy and law. This review-essay focuses on certain aspects of Heuristics and Biases: The Psychology of Intuitive Judgment, edited by Thomas Gilovich, Dale Griffin, and Daniel Kahneman. An understanding of heuristics and biases casts light on many issues in law, involving jury awards, risk regulation, and political economy in general. Some attention is given to the possibility of “moral heuristics”—rules of thumb, for …

Medicaid And The Unconstitutional Dimensions Of Prior Authorization, Jagan Nicholas Ranjan Nov 2002

Medicaid And The Unconstitutional Dimensions Of Prior Authorization, Jagan Nicholas Ranjan

Michigan Law Review

The political outcry over prescription drug costs has been one of the most vociferous in recent memory. From tales depicting renegade seniors sneaking cheap prescriptions of Vioxx out of Tijuana across the border, to the promises of reduced prices made by front-runners during the 2000 Presidential election, the calls for lower drug prices have been forceful and demanding. This war for lower-priced pharmaceuticals fought by consumers, interest groups and politicians against the pharmaceutical industry itself has recently developed yet another front. The latest battle is over Medicaid. The new victims are the poor. Presently, federal statutory provisions in the Medicaid …

Decision Support For Mine Action - Kosovo, Aldo Benini

Global CWD Repository

Shortly after deploying the first-ever landmine impact survey team to the field in Yemen during July 1999, Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF) was asked by the European Union and the U.S. State Department’s Office for Global Humanitarian Demining Programs to make a critical contribution to the international response in the province of Kosovo in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. The mission: to classify affected communities in Kosovo by the severity of socio-economic impacts caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) and develop a system for prioritizing the tasks that the United Nations Mine Action Coordination Center (UNMACC) managed. The …

Who Will Empower The Better Half? Social Dynamics In Operation, Debabrata Lahiri, Santanu Mitra Nov 2002

Who Will Empower The Better Half? Social Dynamics In Operation, Debabrata Lahiri, Santanu Mitra

Journal of International Women's Studies

In a game theoretic framework it can be argued that a gender sensitive institution is an offshoot of certain social conditions, which in most cases need to be acted upon by some anti-establishment catalytic agent. Given the fact that among about half of the population there is a need for such an institution, the main function of a catalytic agent is to engineer a conversion of that need into an active demand. In a society characterized by gender exploitation, catalytic agent can only come exogenously. For a sub-society it is easier to come across such an exogenous catalytic agent. The …
