Increased Production Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines And Enhanced T Cell Responses After Activation Of Human Dendritic Cells With Il-1 And Cd40 Ligand, Amy Wesa, Anne Galy

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Various microbial, inflammatory and immune signals regulate the activation of dendritic cells (DC), determining their ability to interact with naïve T cells and to produce cytokines that direct T cell development. In particular, CD40L and IL-1 cooperatively activate DC to secrete high levels of IL-12. The immuno-stimulatory capacity of such DC is otherwise not well-defined prompting further characterization of the effects of IL-1 and family members on DC activation in comparison with other pro-inflammatory stimuli.

Results

Human DC co-activated in vitro by CD40L and IL-1β expressed numerous cytokine genes including IL-12β, IL-23 p19, IL-1β, IL-1α, IL-1Ra, IL-10, IL-6, …

Abstract

Background

Cerebrovascular disease is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and about one-fourth of cerebrovascular deaths are attributed to ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IA). Epidemiological evidence suggests that IAs cluster in families, and are therefore probably genetic. Identification of individuals at risk for developing IAs by genetic tests will allow concentration of diagnostic imaging on high-risk individuals. We used model-free linkage analysis based on allele sharing with a two-stage design for a genome-wide scan to identify chromosomal regions that may harbor IA loci.

Methods

We previously estimated sibling relative risk in the Finnish population at between …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We investigated whether the activity of double-stranded RNA activated kinase (p68/PKR) is necessary for induction of IDO (indolamine 2,3 -dioxygenase) gene by IFN-\gamma. For this purpose, we planned to abrogate the function of cellular wt-PKR gene. Clones of ME180 cells expressing the dominant negative form of PKR were selected in the presence of neomycin. Then these cells were treated with IFN-\gamma and accumulation of IDO protein was determined by Western blot analysis. We found that clones expressing the dominant negative form of the PKR gene were not only resistant to IFN-\gamma-mediated killing, but were also incapable of inducing accumulation of …

Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski Jan 2002

Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although many studies have addressed burnout, secondary trauma, and job satisfaction among child welfare workers throughout the United States, a review of the current and available literature revealed limited research addressing the impact of vicarious trauma and its relationship to worker retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction. This study was conducted within the context of traumatology theory and examined how vicarious trauma affects child welfare workers and to what degree vicarious trauma has had an impact on their collective community, the child welfare system. The research question that guided this study was: How does vicarious trauma affect child welfare workers and …

An Examination Of The Development Of Personal Power Among Trainees At Various Stages Of The Counselor Education Process, John Welburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the effect that participation in counselor training had on the personal power levels of 45 student volunteers representing three levels of counseling training. Group I (Beginning level) consisted of 15 students beginning counselor training, Group II (Practicum level) was comprised of 16 students beginning the practicum experience, and Group III (Graduating level) was consisted of 14 students graduating from the counselor training program. Individual assessment of personal power levels was accomplished utilizing Hagberg's Personal Power Profile, a 72 question instrument designed to measure individual personal power levels. The six stages of personal power that the instrument is …

Executive Orders, The Very Definition Of Tyranny, And The Congressional Solution, The Separation Of Powers Restoration Act, Leanna M. Anderson Jan 2002

Executive Orders, The Very Definition Of Tyranny, And The Congressional Solution, The Separation Of Powers Restoration Act, Leanna M. Anderson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

James Madison wrote, "The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands... may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny." The Federalist No. 47, at 300 (James Madison) (Henry Cabot Lodge ed., 1888). Expansive executive orders are often criticized as the merger of legislative and executive powers in the hands of the President. This Note examines how the judiciary has worked to check this "tyranny." After examining the difficulties in challenging executive orders, this Note examines how the proposed Separation of Powers Restoration Act would facilitate legal challenges to executive orders.

Comparison Of Antibiotic Resistance Patterns Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli In Outpatient And Inpatient Populations From 1990 To 1996 In Bemidji, Mn, Gail R. Conway, Patrick Guilfoile Jan 2002

Comparison Of Antibiotic Resistance Patterns Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli In Outpatient And Inpatient Populations From 1990 To 1996 In Bemidji, Mn, Gail R. Conway, Patrick Guilfoile

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A retrospective study of antibiotic susceptibility was conducted on data from all uropathogenic Escherichia coli submitted to the MeritCare Clinic-Bemidji, MN and the North Country Regional Hospital-Bemidji, MN during 1990, 1993, and 1996. The proportion of antibiotic resistant strains was generally equal or higher in E. coli isolates from community-acquired infections than with E. coli isolates from nosocomial infections. Comparison with antibiotic prescriptions during 1990, 1993, and 1996 provided no clear relation between antibiotics prescribed for outpatient urinary tract infections and the proportion of E. coli strains resistant to those antibiotics. This suggests that factors other than selection for resistance …

Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien Jan 2002

Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A programming approach, data envelopment analysis (DEA), will sort and rank occupations on the basis of maximizing skills required and minimizing that occupation's wage resulting in a set of "hiring" efficiency scores. This procedure improves Borda rankings (rankings based on the average of rankings of the individual components), fixed weight, or subjective weighting schemes. In DEA, the linear programming weights or coefficients are explicitly chosen to maximize the discrimination between the skills and wages. A rank correlation between the efficiency scores and various work and demographic variables is performed. The results show a negative correlation between the wage rate and …

Self -Determination And Success Outcomes Of Two -Year College Students With Disabilities: An Integration Of Quantitative And Qualitative Approaches, Deborah Russo Jameson Jan 2002

Self -Determination And Success Outcomes Of Two -Year College Students With Disabilities: An Integration Of Quantitative And Qualitative Approaches, Deborah Russo Jameson

Doctoral Dissertations

Two recent movements have occurred in the name of equality of opportunity in a democratic America: the Disabilities Movement in higher education where increasing numbers of students with disabilities are enrolling in college; and the Self-Determination Movement (Wehmeyer, 2000; Ward & Meyer, Fall, 99) as it relates to transition initiatives and positive adult outcomes for individuals with disabilities. To date, the Self-Determination Movement has made few in-roads into higher education, and a relationship between the success of college students with disabilities and self-determination remains largely untested.

The purpose of this study was to investigate a possible relationship between post-secondary success …
