Fa Composition Of Crude Oil Recovered From Catfish Viscera, Subramaniam Sathivel, Witoon Prinyawiwatkul, Casey C. Grimm, Joan M. King, Steven Lloyd

Faculty Publications

The FA composition of crude catfish oil recovered from whole viscera, digestive tract, liver, gallbladder, and visceral storage fat was determined and compared with that of fillet and nugget (abdominal portion). About 34% crude fat (wet basis) could be recovered from the whole catfish viscera. FA found in crude catfish visceral oil were C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, C18:3, C20:0, C20:1, C20:2, C20:3, C20:4, and C22:6, the predominant FA being C18:1, C16:0, C18:2, and C18:0. Catfish visceral oil was characterized by a high level of unsaturated FA, which was similarly found in fillet and nugget. Total unsaturated FA in …

An Undergraduate Biophysics Program: Curricular Examples And Lessons From A Liberal Arts Context, Suzanne Amador Kane

Physics Faculty Scholarship

I wrote this article to give a thorough and comprehensive overview of what such programs look like and what sort of institutional challenges arise on putting these programs together. The stimulus for doing so was the steady stream of requests, usually via email, from other college physics departments in terested in starting up their own biophysics prohgrams and from other professors wishing to teach biophysics. --author-supplied description

Structuring Lawmaking To Reduce Cognitive Bias: A Critial View, William N. Eskridge Jr., John A. Ferejohn Jan 2002

Structuring Lawmaking To Reduce Cognitive Bias: A Critial View, William N. Eskridge Jr., John A. Ferejohn

Faculty Articles

Our provisional view, expressed in Part I, is that cognitive psychology, in its current state of development, is best deployed as a critical theory which supplements our understanding of the operation of interest group pressure, institutional interaction, and the process of policy debate and deliberation. At this point, cognitive psychology does not constitute a new descriptive theory of the regulatory state, nor does it have any particular normative contribution beyond banally observing that rational actors better advance their goals by making accurate rather than biased judgments. Currently, cognitive psychology does not even constitute a body of learning telling us what …

Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa Murray Jan 2002

Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa Murray

Faculty Articles

In this Article, I argue that the GI Bill is consistent with the social welfare policies of the New Deal period, in particular the Social Security Act of 1935, and so should be examined within the analytical framework established by scholars like Linda Gordon and Theda Skocpol in their studies of the Social Security Act's social welfare programs. Although the Bill is gender-neutral on its face, it was framed by normative assumptions about military participation and work that ensured that it was socially understood to benefit male veterans.

Courting Disorder: Some Thoughts On Community Courts, Anthony C. Thompson Jan 2002

Courting Disorder: Some Thoughts On Community Courts, Anthony C. Thompson

Faculty Articles

This Essay will use empirical and anecdotal data as well as existing literature on community courts to evaluate the effectiveness of these courts in achieving their stated objectives. In so doing, this Essay does not purport to evaluate all types of community courts. Nor will it attempt to provide an in-depth analysis of all the issues that surround the history, establishment, design, and operation of community courts. Rather, this Essay will identify certain representative problems that inevitably occur in these courts and will examine the extent to which the conflicts inherent in their operation prevent these courts from achieving their …

Eisgruber's House Of Lords, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2002

Eisgruber's House Of Lords, Jeremy Waldron

Faculty Articles

Professor Eisgruber, in my opinion, succeeds in rebutting originalist and naive textualist approaches to the United States Constitution. He is right, I think, in arguing that moral judgments-judgments about justice, for example, and about the rights that people ought to have against one another are inescapable in constitutional law. And if he were to make the case-which in the book he rather assumes than argues for-that many of the issues on which the Constitution instructs us to make moral judgments are issues on which sound politics requires moral judgment, I would be inclined to agree with that too. What I …

A Rational Basis For Affirmative Action: A Shaky But Classical Liberal Defense, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2002

A Rational Basis For Affirmative Action: A Shaky But Classical Liberal Defense, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

I propose to outline in some detail the approach that I would take to these questions on the assumption that the only tools in the toolbox were the bare Constitutional text and a general appreciation of the Constitution as a classical liberal document, that is, that emphasizes limited government, strong protection of property rights and contractual freedoms, coupled with prohibitions against force and fraud on the one hand, and monopoly power on the other. Many people would assume, wrongly, that this systematic view of the Constitution leads to an invalidation of all affirmative action programs. But I believe that the …

Minor Rights: The Adolescent Abortion Cases, Martin Guggenheim Jan 2002

Minor Rights: The Adolescent Abortion Cases, Martin Guggenheim

Faculty Articles

This article focuses on two Supreme Court decisions (Planned Parenthood v. Danforth and Bellotti v. Baird) in which the Court redefined the entire conception of children's rights. The article suggests that the Supreme Court used a construct of children's constitutional "rights" to restrict the rights of children. By doing so, the Court decisively derailed an incipient children's rights movement that had the potential to liberate children from the dominion of adults. In Danforth, the Court considered for the first time the constitutionality of a state statute that contained a mandatory parental consent provision. The Court struck down that part of …

The Biases Of Risk Tradeoff Analysis: Towards Parity In Environmental And Health-And-Safety Regulaion, Samuel J. Rascoff, Richard L. Revesz Jan 2002

The Biases Of Risk Tradeoff Analysis: Towards Parity In Environmental And Health-And-Safety Regulaion, Samuel J. Rascoff, Richard L. Revesz

Faculty Articles

Risk tradeoff analysis is in the process of transforming the practice of regulation. Its core idea is simple and intuitively appealing: Regulations undertaken to minimize or eliminate certain health risks often have the perverse effect of promoting other risks A serious analysis of the impact of a regulation should pay attention not only to its primary effects in reducing the so-called target risk, but also to the secondary effects of the regulation in bringing about "ancillary risks." In this way, risk tradeoff analysis promises a more rational technique for the evaluation of regulation. Risk tradeoff analysis, however, focuses exclusively on …

Igbo As An Endangered Language, Chukwuma Azuonye Jan 2002

Igbo As An Endangered Language, Chukwuma Azuonye

Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series

At first sight, the question "Is Igbo an endangered language," would appear to be grossly misplaced, since the survival of the language seems to be well guaranteed by its status both as one of the three main languages of Nigeria and one of the major languages of literature, education, and commerce in Africa. Furthermore, with its well over 25 million native speakers who live in one of the most densely populated areas of the world with an exceptionally high fertility rate and a traditional world view and culture that promote the raising of large families, it would appear that there …

Grandparent Care In The United States: Comparisons By Race And Ethnicity, Jan Mutchler, Seungah Lee, Lindsey A. Baker

Gerontology Institute Publications

The purpose of this report is to compare information on grandparent caregivers in the United States among members of five different racial and ethnic groups. Many grandparents are responsible for grandchildren who live with them in the same household. The 1996 Welfare Reform Act mandates that statistics be collected on grandparents who serve as caregivers to a grandchild. In response to this requirement, questions were developed for the 2000 Census of Population asking each adult about care for grandchildren living in the same household.2 Data from the 2000 Census 5% Public Use Microdata Sample are used in our calculations. The …

Medical Devices: A Stronghold Of The Commonwealth's Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

We benefit from medical devices throughout our lives: Prenatal development is monitored by ultrasound devices, sports injuries are diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging and fixed with arthroscopic tools, and heart blockages are cleared with angioplasties and drug-coated stents. Devices include the simple and mundane—eyeglasses and thermometers—and stretch to the boundaries of technology—laser scalpels, needles embedded with microprocessors, MRI machines, and artificial hearts. All are products of the medical device industry. Massachusetts is one of the nation’s leading states in medical device development and production.

Press Reports Of Animal Hoarding, Arnold Arluke, Randy Frost, Gail Steketee, Gary Patronek, Carter Luke, Edward Messner, Jane Nathanson, Michelle Papazian

Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article explores how the press reports nonhuman animal hoarding and hoarders. It discusses how 100 articles from 1995 to the present were content analyzed. Analysis revealed five emotional themes that include drama, revulsion, sympathy, indignation, and humor. While these themes draw readers' attention and make disparate facts behind cases understandable by packaging them in familiar formats, they also present an inconsistent picture of animal hoarding that can confuse readers about the nature and significance of this behavior as well as animal abuse, more generally.

The Political Personality Of U.S. President George W. Bush, Aubrey Immelman Jan 2002

The Political Personality Of U.S. President George W. Bush, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of U.S. president George W. Bush, conducted 1998–2000 from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Psychodiagnostically relevant data regarding Bush was extracted from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed in accordance with interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Bush was found to be …

A Strategy For Evangelism Among The Bengali Folk Hindus Of Calcutta, Eric Kujur Jan 2002

A Strategy For Evangelism Among The Bengali Folk Hindus Of Calcutta, Eric Kujur

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop a strategy to reach the unreached Bengali Folk Hindus of Calcutta. First, general information on the target group was presented. This included information on their lifestyle and traditional religious beliefs and practices. This is a large group of people who do not belong to the castes and do not enjoy the benefits of financial, educational, and political status. A brief review of what Roman Catholic and Protestant churches have done for the Folk Hindus of Calcutta, with their medical, educational, spiritual, and social services, helped us to understand the strengths and weaknesses …

Strategies For Evangelizing The Upper-Class People In Ghana, Ampofo Benjamin Akyiano Jan 2002

Strategies For Evangelizing The Upper-Class People In Ghana, Ampofo Benjamin Akyiano

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church, which began its ministry in Ghana in 1888, is experiencing difficulty evangelizing upper-class people. The traditional method of soul-winning, public evangelism, has been successful to evangelize middle and lower social classes but not the wealthy and well-educated class. Currently, the church and the upper-class minority are far apart. The church must update its evangelistic methods to reach all classes to finish the gospel commission in Ghana.

Method

This study presents Ghana's upper-class, their social characteristics, lifestyles, world-views, population, and social and religious groups. Interviews and questionnaires were used to discover the factors that hinder the …

Increased Production Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines And Enhanced T Cell Responses After Activation Of Human Dendritic Cells With Il-1 And Cd40 Ligand, Amy Wesa, Anne Galy Jan 2002

Increased Production Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines And Enhanced T Cell Responses After Activation Of Human Dendritic Cells With Il-1 And Cd40 Ligand, Amy Wesa, Anne Galy

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Various microbial, inflammatory and immune signals regulate the activation of dendritic cells (DC), determining their ability to interact with naïve T cells and to produce cytokines that direct T cell development. In particular, CD40L and IL-1 cooperatively activate DC to secrete high levels of IL-12. The immuno-stimulatory capacity of such DC is otherwise not well-defined prompting further characterization of the effects of IL-1 and family members on DC activation in comparison with other pro-inflammatory stimuli.

Results

Human DC co-activated in vitro by CD40L and IL-1β expressed numerous cytokine genes including IL-12β, IL-23 p19, IL-1β, IL-1α, IL-1Ra, IL-10, IL-6, …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Cerebrovascular disease is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and about one-fourth of cerebrovascular deaths are attributed to ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IA). Epidemiological evidence suggests that IAs cluster in families, and are therefore probably genetic. Identification of individuals at risk for developing IAs by genetic tests will allow concentration of diagnostic imaging on high-risk individuals. We used model-free linkage analysis based on allele sharing with a two-stage design for a genome-wide scan to identify chromosomal regions that may harbor IA loci.

Methods

We previously estimated sibling relative risk in the Finnish population at between …
